Because I'm a pain in the.....

Gautam started a thread about big blocks of messages. Then a few folk(including myself) put in their .02 about what else irks them. Since that thread has ground to a halt, I am starting my own.

I just want to throw out there for scrutiny the word misuses I've found here at MustangWorks.

I really do not intend to pound on any one particular person. I hope I do not offend anyone. But if I do, get over it.

Here is what I posted in Gautam's thread
your vs you're
there vs their vs they're
course vs coarse
lose vs loose
which vs witch
break vs brake
wait vs weight
here vs hear

And here(not hear) is what I found a few minutes ago while reading posts here at MW
herd vs heard
to vs too (two also)
waste vs waist
pane vs pain
buy vs by vs bye

Yes, I'm being picky. No, I do not guage someone's IQ by these mistakes. I'm just throwin' fuel on the fire.

Capri306 01-04-2001 09:02 PM

Yeah, and those gross misuses of prepositions are irritating as well. http://www.mustangworks.com/interact...d/rolleyes.gif

all i can say in defense of the errors is tht sometimes you'll (thats correct, is it not?) be typing so fast and just leave out a letter here (did it right again) or there(not bad so far)..doesn't mean your iq is not up to par, just means you don't proof read your (thats like 4 in a row) work when you're (im getting the hang of this) threw (damn i screwed up and i'm almost done)..you can usually tell the "ocassional typo comitting" people from the "really bad writers" people though..eh no big deal..another thing, you can usually tell how old someone is by the way they write (not right)..guess my age and you get a prize

ThE onLy Real ***** thAt i got on diS Forem is thAt people Who honestly do knot know from first hand experiance give advice wrong. The worst one is that speed density can not be modified. There are so many, If I don't know first hand I keep my fingers still. Rather than typing an old myth, and steering some one wrong.

Here ya go 90LSC

Perhaps the most confusing mix up. Even if the people are thinking about it, they could still mix it up.

Affect vs Effect

Hahahaha! Beat that commonly misused word!

90LSC 01-05-2001 05:55 PM

Good point, Unit.
Your effect did not affect much, even though you affected to understand how much effect you had on this thread.

Lets not be too picky guys. I dont want to feel like I'm writing an essay to be graded here every time I post. I never proof read mystuff, and most of the time I'm too lazy to even backspace when I make a mistake.

I feel like its like talking with your friends, you screw things up. (Me & I etc) and who cares. Type fast, get your point across with out being a moron and who cares.

I agree with 88workhorse, I hate idiots that think they know what they're talking about give horrible advice and ont know **** ! **** those bastards. http://www.mustangworks.com/interact...rd/biggrin.gif

90LSC 01-06-2001 01:43 PM

The point of this thread is NOT to pick on anyone, it is NOT to make anyone think they are being graded or evaluated or anything of the sort. I have simply{in fun}tossed out some common misuses that I find amusing.

NoSlow5.0....it wasn't that I had to proof read and edit. I just kept thinking of better phrases.

Weather eye right like dis, or I write like this, all I expect from this board is helpful and useful information and advice, regardless if spelling and punctuation are exact and regardless if it is a run-on sentence such as the one I am writing here. So, to reitterate (May the Mustang Gods cast an evil spell on my engine if that is not spelled right) past points, who cares. http://www.mustangworks.com/interact...d/rolleyes.gif

86LX5liter: Thank you, you proved my point.

86LX5liter 01-07-2001 12:11 PM

my point, i am sure the rest of the board agrees, is who gives a crap how people type? like it was stated a few posts ago, we come here for information, advice, and fun. we don't come here for an english lesson. understand? good.

I'm getting tired of seeing people get all worked up on threads that were intended to be a joke.

Why is it so many people on this board have the desire to take everything personally and lash out at other members?

As long as nobody is ripping on you, or other members and is just having a little fun, knock off the BS negative **** . Unless of course you are just having a little fun back.

Moxie 01-08-2001 07:26 PM

As long as we're discussing pet peeves, I'm going to share #1 on my list:

Calling nitrous oxide NOS. It is n2o. NOS is a brand name, and an acronym for Nitrous Oxide Systems.

I laugh when I see people ask what brand of NOS system they should purchase. They answered their own question.

I agree with you Unit 5302.

I'm gonna have to give the people who are seemingly getting pissed off the benefit of the doubt in saying that they are just joking. I don't understand why they would even take the time to post a negative reply if they didn't like the topic (that's a waste of time).

THIS IS MUSTANG WORKS DUDES.

I guess the usage of brand names as the actual product only gets to me every once and a while. Some times it's just easier to use the brand name rather than the technical term.

Kleenex vs Tissue
Formica vs Laminate
NOS vs N20
Rollerblades vs In line skates (this one is really ackward)

In the south, one that really does annoy me is the use of "Coke" to refer to all brands of pop (or soda if you're not from the midwest), as in what kind of coke would you like.

You just have to take it with a grain of salt though, people who don't know better usually look at you like you're nuts if you try to explain it anyway.

90LSC 01-09-2001 11:40 AM

Unit and Fox, thank you.

Speaking of brand names.....Lots of people have Posi-traction, even in their Fords and Mopars.

Unit, I've live in the south most of my life and I have never understood the Coke thing.
Me:"Bubba, I'm going to the store, you want anything?"
Bubba:"Get me a Coke"
Me:"Diet or regular"
Bubba:"Grape Nehi"
Me:????????????

if you really want to split hairs... try this: then vs. than
Then is a word to describe time... this happened THEN this
than is a word to describe feelings towards objects... i like my ford better THAN your chevy.
When you are in college (and have passed english classes http://www.mustangworks.com/interact...rd/biggrin.gif) you can just split hairs all damn day long!! So why don't we stop complaining so much and just relax and have some fun laughing at the Chevy stomping stories and fellow girl/boy-friend heart breaks. I say boy/girl friend because if you only use girlfriend we are sexist... and if we say he/she all the time without reversing the roles once and awhile like she/he, we are still considered sexist since we are still putting men first. http://www.mustangworks.com/interact...rd/biggrin.gif just being a smart a$$ ... see how this is a snowball? Yes the butterfly-chaos factor is in effect (or is that affect? http://www.mustangworks.com/interact...oard/smile.gif)
