Question ROLL CAGE vs. NJDMV

I want to put a 6pt. roll cage in my '89 GT. My car is a daily driver and I live in New Jersey. Any other guys in Jersey with a roll cage have problems passing inspection. My car is street legal (high flow cats) otherwise. Thanks!

How modified is the car??? Is it necessary for the power or for looks?

Question

The cage would be mainly for looks. I'm getting rid of my back seats and want the cage to fill in the space. I don't plan on racing the car too often, but a little extra protection never hurt.

Don't get me wrong, I like the looks of a cage, but it seems like overkill in this situation.....see what everyone else thinks

I waited until I knew I needed the roll bar before I planned installing mine. It is going in later this month, if you don't need it I wouldn't put it in, kinda a ricer thing. I hate seeing cars with cages and roll bars that are far from the 11.99 or 12.99(verts) barrier. What do you other guys think? It will actually slow your car down due to the extra weight.

I've been thinking about putting a 6pt roll bar in my car. I'm not at the 11.99 barrier yet but I will be when I add the spray. But I'm also gonna do it to stiffen the car up, because I autox. Not to mention the saftey that it adds.

Well, the ONLY reason I am putting a cage in is because the track wont let me drag without it now (unless I purposely go a little slower and what fun would that be?)
At carlsbad raceway they want any vert running 14.00-15.00 to have a roll bar and 13.99 and under to have a cage...they were easy on me last time because I had just gotten into the 13's...now with the extra nitrous I got flowin they wont be so nice...

I wouldn't bother with it if the track didn't make me get it...got better things to spend the money on!
DAMN VERTS!

You could have a 6 point cage with removable sidebars installed and then you have the option of removing the sidebars when you go to the tech place. Removable sidebars are legal all the way down to 10 flat in the quarter mile and the 6point cage can also be made to swing out if you want. I have a 10 point cage that has swingout/removable sidebars and absolutely love it because I can remove them for normal driving when Im not going to the track. Good Luck.
