Question just bought first stang, need help, dont know much about this stuff

i just bought a 95 gt with 80000 miles. first of all, some have said 80000 miles is way to much for a 95? that scares me because i already bought the car. it was all stock except for a shifter, (the handle says hurst?), k&n air filter, and flowmaster exhaust. everything seems good except forwhen i reach around 95-100 mph the shifter area gradually started to shake and got to the point where it was pretty violent. it scared the hell out of me. i tried putting it it neutral but it still had the heavy vibration. then when i slowed down to around 90 again, it went away. im not a punk kid who wants to go fast all the time and beat the hell out of it. but i mean mustangs should be able to go 100 without violent vibration correct?? its the kind of thing where if i got it fixed. i would be content going 65 all the time. but it just eats at me even though its at high speeds. is my car trashed??? i balanced the wheels and got 2 new rear shocks so far. also does anyone know what i should look for as far as problems with it or where i should start? im scared of the high miles and i hope its not beat on. i want to put perfomance parts in there but i dont want to mess up anything. im 100 percent new to this stuff. HELPP!!! THANK YOU to anyone who helps me out with this stuff

Cool

It kind of sounds as if someone else has already "beat the hell out of your car" 80k on a 95 is a bit steep to me, but anyway...I'd start by checking the universal joints, then the trans. mount itself, and the lube in the trans. if all this is OK then you should have a pro check the trans internally for excessive wear.

that is a lot of miles (my 90 has 89k), but thats not anything bad, it just has miles on it. we have a bunch of people on this board who still race with much more than 100k miles, and a few with much more. on the vibration, could be mounts (transmission or engine) or something within the transmission. can you give us any more info?

Exclamation

all the info on my vibration is as follows:

it happens only above 90-95 miles per hour, it is a very heavy vibration that comes through the shifter area regardless of if its in gear or not(i tried putting it in nuetral but it still vibrating) the car also has some kind of hurst shifter but i dont know if that has anything to do with it. peolpe have been telling me things like ujoints and drive shaft and things like that.

thanks for your help

1st if it has that many miles its probably highway which isnt that bad. Is it automatic? The vibration is probably the driveshaft. Get under it and twist the shaft w/ parking brake on and see if the u-joints are bad. Dont go buying stuff trying to figure it out 'cause that can get expensive. Did you buy from a dealer or person. If from a person check to see if gears were installed. Sometimes after a gear swap the stock d.shaft will vibrate. Good luck brother and welcome to the world of stang bangers. John

its a 5 speed, i bought it from a person but i didnt ask him if it had gears installed. is there a way to figure that out by myself?
also, when you say twist the drive shaft, no problem, but how can i see if the ujoints are bad?

thanks for your help

i would say that it has gears. The stock driveshafts are known to make vibration after gears are installed. Get an aluminum driveshaft and that would probably solve the problem.

Ok first off let me tell you this, 80k is not really high miles. The average person puts 12,000 miles per year. So if your car is 7 years old, that is 84,000 miles. Don't sweat the miles, and more than likely someone hasn't beat on the car to bad, I wouldn't worry about it. It's your car now. Same thing happend on my 89, but it was after the installation of gears, about 80-90 it would vibrate pretty bad. But it ended up being on of my tires was not balanced correctly. But if you have checked all your wheels/tires. Then I would lean towards your driveshaft, just get an aluminum one if that is the problem(which I think it is.) There like $159 from summit. Well good luck with your new car! And don't worry about the mileage at all, I've put 4,000 on my new one in about a month. So that would be 48,000 miles a year, and if my car was 7 years old like yours, and I did that every month it would have 336,000 miles on it. So that makes 80,000 seem like nothing. =P

My 89 has 140K on it so don't let someone tell you 80K is too much.

Cool

I'll Ditto on 80K miles are ok, that just means the car was actually daily driven, not babied.

My car had a similar vibration at speed, and I have the stock 2.73 gears still. The vibration was felt through the shifter handle, with a aftermarket shifter there is no rubber insulator so you will feel it worse. I figured it was probably a out of balance driveshaft combined with tired ujoints. The FMS aluminum driveshaft was only $160 for my car, a few bucks more for 94-95, and the vibration totally went away, worth it big time.

As for addnl mods, new headers and H pipe help out. Switch to a cold air intake, larger Mass airflow sensor, throttle body.
If you want more, new intake, heads, cam, stroker 347, NOS, blower whatever you want to spend

Start by fixing the vibration, get used to the car and slowly make some minor mods
