In my experience, the 'best' way to find a weak spot in your (older) engine (rings, valve guides, etc) is to do an extended 120 mph run.

I know, I've done it.

Usually it's ring failure but do the compression test so you'll have a better idea of what's up. Start thinking 'rebuild', just in case. That way, if it turns out to be a minor problem, you'll be thrilled and if it isn't, you'll be prepared, not shocked.
