9 sec. Mustang goes down to Z-28 street racing in ST.Louis

Not excatly what we want to call a good story but, one that needs to be told. At the recent Mobil 1 Challange in St.Louis this past weekend, Me and my brother trailer the car up there with the perpose of looking for a little action. A couple of our friends who went last year said there was some greet street racing and since we just got done putting together his car we should go. First i will tell you about my bros mustang. Its a 88 GT with a 6 yr old DSS 306 (This will come into play latter in the story) at 66mm Turbo with a turbo technolgy Pipe kit. Victor Jr heads with Trick Flow R Intake. The car is featured May 5.0 2002 under title "Road Raging". The car went 2 weeks ago 9.95 at 136 on its 2nd pass with no tuning on the speed-pro. Anyway, We get to the spot in which we find that our friends were not full of ****. There are vipers, lotus some sick LS-1 and Z-06 around but none wanted anything to do with this car. Then a local guy buy the name of jimmy shows up trailering this 89 Z-28 with pro-stars on it. Very innocent looking but our friends said it was 9sec ride and that he was pretty cool to talk to. So for about an hour we hung out with jimmy looking at all the street machines. He finnaly ask us if we want to race for money. We really didnt want to race for money cause we KNOW his car was fast but ended up doing anyway for $50. The spot the race was for was off of I-255 right next to a wal-mart so everbody couls specate. Now, this is the first time we had ever had a serious money race. Now this Jimmy was a pro at this. Had car on side of road to give a go siginal and trucks that got behind us and shut down the highway for our run! Well after a little confussion we get lined up and hit the transbrake and wait for the go. When the light droped i yelled go and we had a good amount of weel spin. By the top of secound Jimmy is about a car and a half on us. When we hit secound all hell broke loose. The Mustang took a large pop and a nasty vibration, at first we thought it was the rear end but when the motor died and it stoped we knew it was more serious. Jimmy kept into it and i think we still would have lost. Pull off at the next exit and find water and oil mixed leaknig on the ground. We got it back on the trailer to find a hole in the block around the 7 and 8 cylinder next to the oil pan. Guess 650-700 hp is to much for a stock block. We knew the block was on barrowed time so my bro was not that upset. We sent somelse to go pay Jimmy and he was real cool saying he was sorry we broke the motor. The reply was "See ya next Year!"

Sounds like a fun experience though. Sedanman, a good friend of mine, went to the World Ford Challenge.

Car sounds sick man, i will pick up that issue and check it out if i still can.

Damn, I had no idea you could run 650-700 HP on a stock block.

You were lucky to get one good pass in before it blew, I am surprised it held up long as it did.

Congrats on those sick 9 second passes.

Four bolt

That sounds like on sick ride. I read in a recent Muscle Mustang that there is a four bolt 302 crate available. That sould take the other mods and let you get your money back from Jimmy.

Looking to get a r block around a 347. Be at least a year before he can aford it. The car is in the July 2002 5.0 magazine, not the may on page 164.

Smokedawg 05-22-2002 09:30 AM

How much hp can the stock block take safely...575hp???

Ackbar00 05-22-2002 11:04 AM

The offical response is "up to 650hp" but with a trap speed of 137mph we are guessing it was making around 700 rwhp at just 15 psi! When we get that R block we will try throwing around 20-25 psi at it!

Hey man i bought the 5.0 mag yesterday

Awesome looking ride. Very clean! he has a great car.

Ackbar00 05-22-2002 01:51 PM

Thanks, Funny thing it does not look like that now. It has bogarts drag stars with 375/50/10 BFG's out the back, and an all new turbo pipework and intercoller setup. Will take some pictures and try to post them.

Yea anything can happen, do you know what the z had in it? i have a carcraft mag with a red 89 z28, 11.5:1 compression, solid roller 600 lift 400 c.i block, big stall, lots of nos, and it had pro stars, and went low 11's n/a

i'll bet the z28 had a big motor in it, get a 347 sportsman block and beat that guy.:)

Ackbar00,

Why were you riding along in the race? Wouldn't a lighter car have a better chance? Did Jimmy have a passenger?

trey193 05-22-2002 10:23 PM

Where exactly was this ??? Me and a couple of my friends stayed at the Pear Tree Inn in collinsville and we actually drove into St. Louis looking for some action???? Wish we would have known where to find U guys!

sedanman 05-22-2002 10:44 PM

Sorry to hear about the motor.

As for the WFC it rocked! Not very often you see magazine cars street racing or real cobra R's doing smokey burnouts! I had a blast to say the least.

The Z-28 in question had a sm block and NOS. Upon our investigation it also had a ford 9 IN rear in it. Beyond that we do not know, just hearsay and rumor. Tit was a purpose built street racer. I was riding shotgun with my brother running his FAST. Jimmy also had a passanger who was responsable for checking for traffic and lining us up.
Trey 193 - It was off of the I-255 bypass on the other side of the river, Can not remember the road but there was a Hooters in the parking lot. It was about 30 miles from the track.
