Can you figure this out?
OK, I've been hearing this knocking noise coming from my engine, but it'll only happen when I start up my car, after it's put in gear and driven for a minute the noise will go away. And if i were to turn off the car and wait about five minutes and restart it, it would happen all over again. I've heard this for the past little while and only recently (tonight) I'm seeing oil what appears to be coming from the bolt (and creating a small puddle) on the lower intake manifold. Any ideas? I personally am thinking busted gasket seeings how it's an orginal gasket (180,000 Miles +), but how would the explain the knocking? BTW. the engine is in great shape and runs strong. ... incase you were wondering.
thanks a million in advance for any help. |
dude you may need a new oil pump & some main bearings, really, i wouldnt drive it much more with out pulling the oil pan. just a thought  :)

I Concur..Oil Pump
I would think the Oil pump also. No "Check Engine" or "Check Oil" lights on?
Good Luck.. Jenn aka Jane of all Trades... |
no lights poping up.
pull the oil pan? how would the oil pump explain the leakage through the manifold bolt? |
that leak isnt going to cause a knocking noise, you may have a bad wrist pin in a piston rod too.
|
so all in all I should probably say to hell with it and bring it into somebody to have fun with?
cuz this is starting to sound serious. |
LOL
All in all, that is what I usually do....I consider my auto mechanic second only to my Primary Care Physician... LOL...
Good Luck and let us know how it goes... Jenn |
fun. with my luck the guy'll come out with the good / bad news scenario....you can replace the entire engine or not drive it.
lol. thanks for your help, i'll keep ya posted. |
marty, quit scaring my little brother....lol...we need a real opinion.... :p:D:D....just messin' with ya...hehe
i doubt it has anything to do with the piston or anything internal...but its a slim possibility since a lot of the engine parts are warped.... |

what kind of oil filter do you use?
This knock is typical of Ford 302's. Usually a weak pump will cause it. Also if your running a crappy oil filter without a anit-drainback check valve, that could do it, but from seeing the mile on this block, it is time for a rebuild or a new pump but who knows what the bearing looking like. |
this may seem dumb, but you said the sound goes away after the car has warmed up a little. Have you checked your oil level. That'd be the FIRST thing I'd do.

and i dunno what kind of oil filter it has.... |
its not a knock at all....i just heard it a moment ago from him...its more like a squeaking noise...so either somethings loose or a pulley is squeaking...who knows....but it doesnt happen everytime its started and it does go away....weird

It could be your lifters. They might be worn and leaking down when the car sits, that would cause some knocking noise on start up and go away when they get oil back to them.
|
in all honesty, i think it was just the belt...lol
|
sorry wasnt, trying to scare you, but you have to be there to hear the noise, as a mechanic , i can only guess by what im told, good luck. :D :D :D
