There have been a lot of quizzes posted here, and I haven't been able to do to well on them, so I thought I'd do one that I would win at :)

1. PC2100 DDR memory; what is the "2100" in reference to? How is that number derived?

2. A "50X" cd-rom drive (which one can assume is CAV) reads at what speed on the innermost portion of the disk? What does the "X" moniker mean? What company coined the term?

3. What does PCI stand for? AGP? ISA? AMR? CRT? (abbreviations are fun!)

4. How is a TCP connection establish (what is sent first)? What packet is sent to acknowledge the receipt of data? What flag for terminating the connection?

5. What socket did the Pentium Pro processor use? The normal Pentium?

6. Which way should the power supply fan blow (in or out) according to the original ATX specifications?

7. What is the name of the power plug that large devices use (hard drives, cd-roms, etc.)?

8. How many pins are in an ATA-33 IDE cable? How many conductors (wires)? What about ATA-66/100?

Actually, your questions kinda confused me a bit. Your TCP question has me torn between the OSI and modem signals. Anyway, here's my input.

I can't tell you the exact speed, but I know that the disk speed remains the same, but the read speed slows down as the laser gets closer to the center.

X = multiplication of 150KBps transfer rate. For example, 50X means it has a transfer rate of up to 7500KBps (50 X 150KBps)

PCI = Peripheral Component Interconnect
AGP = Accelerated Graphics Port
ISA = Industry Standard Architecture
AMR = ???
CRT = Cathode Ray Tube

5. What socket did the Pentium Pro processor use? The normal Pentium?

Pro = Socket 8
Norm = A ZIF Socket 7

6. Which way should the power supply fan blow (in or out) according to the original ATX specifications?

Blows the hot air out.

P.S. believe it or not, i passed my A+ with killer scores last February. How about some OS questions.

PC2100DDR Memory: DDR modules are named for their peak bandwidth. The 2100 DIMM will transfer 2.1GB per second. The 2.1GB per second comes from multiplying the memory bus width by the data rate. For PC2100 its (8 bytes x 266mhz) = 2128 mb/ second.

A 50X cd-rom only reads at 50X at the very outside of the disk, because data is going by the read head at a higher rate because of the higher circumference (366mm vs. 135mm in the inside). The ratio of these two is .37:1, so with simple math you can find that the inner read speed is 18.5. NEC coined the whole "X" thing.

You guys were both right about these. AMR slots are useless, but some of the big companies use them.

A tcp connection is established with a SYN packet, data is acknowledged with ACK, and the connection is terminated after the sender sets the FIN flag on the last data packet

PKRWUD, you're correct, they both use ZIF sockets.

6. Which way should the power supply fan blow (in or out) according to the original ATX specifications?
As stupid as it sounds, the original specs called for the PSU fan to blow its hot air IN, onto the processor. I've never seen this done.

It's a Molex connector

An ATA-33 cable has 40 pins, and 40 accompanying wires; an ATA-66/100 cable has the same 40 pins, but adds 40 more conductors between each pair of data wires, that are simply grounds.

Dude, I think you need to get out more. I still feel stupid. I scored over 700 on both parts of my A+, but when reading your questions, my mind went blank. I really do love my Mac!:D

Damn I only knew the answers to a few of those questions. I'm more of a software guy though, when it comes to hardware I'm kinda out in the left field. I enjoy more working with programs and problem solving. I'm going to college next year for Computer Programming so I can't wait.
