Help with dead pony
Well not quite dead I hope....I had an accident with my 66 last year and after 7000.00 in paint and body work, not to even think about insurance problems(they think because it was 37 years old then it must be a peice)it is back in my garage. The problem is it runs like crap. My baby has a 302, 351 heads and msd, along with the reg. mods. The engine was put in right before the crunch and all parts are new or 2 years old. Lets see if any of ya'll have run into the problem I have before.
Duel exh. with headers. makes a very puttering tone, small backfires in idle, on the street a loud one every now and again. When you rev the engine in park on the backstroke of the gas you can hear a metalic fluttering that is very low(like a groan in a metal chair when you lean back) The car will not stay on after you start it, unless you hold the gas a bit down for a while. and if it is started will now and again shake noticably. There is no leaks on any part of the car(oil, gas, trans, rad) If I am stopped and hit the gas the car will bogg down, and is hard to get up to speed. I have to move it soon and would like to fix it before I do so so any help would be great. |

Did it run better before the accident? My first guess would be an ignition timing problem or valve problem (broken spring?) You will get more ideas from the Windsor forum though.

Yeah the other day in the spirt of spending money I replaced the cap, and the roter for the MSD. I then replaced the wires, checked the plugs, connections. Made sure all the pipes were snug(one was loose by the header). Then I replaced the fuel pump. The car runs smoother, but still a bit rough. I am going to play a bit with the carb and timing next. Yeah and after I did that I noticed the @@@@ heater core blew, god I hate this time of year.

Vacum leak came to mind when I read your post. Auto's like to loose the back of intake hose. Or at the tranny. Loose carb base. Check any vacum line.

Yeah I checked the lines, all good. I am breaking down and about to take it to the shop. My good friend was having a fun go beside me in his AMX(390) and my car choked down so bad it looked like I was driving my stationwagon. He has been calling all day loving the fact he got one on me. Well if it must go to the shop then maybe its time for that posi all keep talking about

If the cars been sitting for a year you may have to rebuild the carburetor. I had a carburetor sit for a year and when installed on a friend's truck it would die and had other problems, a rebuild cured it.

yeah the carb has been a piece since I bought it.I got a 750 that I am working on now to replace it. I blame it all on Holley. Hate them now more than ever. But on the lighter note it snowed in Va Beach last night and I took the stang out for fun in the local parking lot.Lots of ooooooo's. Even got to wacth this guy in a jeep get his car up to about 60 then hit a snowed under curb, broke his shock tower .I just laughed. Man we here at the Beach sure dont know how to drive in the snow!
