Custom auto insurance for stangs?
 

I was wondering if anyone here uses one of the custom auto insurance companies. In my case my car is an '88 which book values for about $2000 maybe... I don't even know. The problem is I've got like way too much money invested in it like most. So if it gets stolen or some drunk t-bones me I don't get enough money to buy another set of heads. I've heard of these companies that just handle collector cars and street rods that see limited road use and they are insured for an "agreed" value. For instance I say my car is worth $15,000 and they figure my rate to be $180/year. Does anyone here use an insurer like that? I'd love to get some feedback and references if possible. Thanks.

There are a few places. I did a search on Lycos and Ask and came up with a few. Input the words "Classic Car Insurance" or "Custom Car Insurance". I used to have my 66 Olds and 66 Chevelle insured with J C Taylor but they only insure original cars.

Those types of insurance are good if you only drive the car every once in a while, but the mileage limits for that type of coverage are generally too low to meet with a daily driver without making the rates really high.

Along with having all the receipts for the work and parts you've invested in your car you can also have it appraised by a state-licensed appraiser and insure it under 'Assessed Valuation' (or some similar term) but the cost may be high on a frequently-driven Mustang. The good part is that if the car is wrecked or stolen you at least get back something close to what it's worth. This only covers collision and comprehensive coverage, not liability, which is a distinct and separate coverage. Bottom line: Even with 'special' insurance, you almost never get back what you actually invest in your Mustang, dollar for dollar. Driving it is your real reward. A point to remember for all of us.

i'm an insurance agent, and the custom car insurers like hagerty and jc whitley have a rule about cars being 20 years old. Occasionally they will break the rule for an existing customer with pleanty of classics already insured. Example. one of my customers had a 57 chevorlet and a 69 chevelle and a nomad already insured, so they made an exception on his 87 grand national and his 03 cobra. He has progressive on his daily driven 99 suburban and 02 chevorlet p/up, which he has to provide copies of to hagerty to prove none of the others are being commuted in. No mileage statements are really requied, but as an agent i have the responsibility to ferret out the commuters if i want to continue selling for them. Progressive (whom i also represent) has the ability to do a rate on a custom car or kit car. Our stang fall into the custom car part of that catagory. I did a rate on myself and my 84 gt350 at a determined value of 10000. Under that category, i believe the mods and paint would be taken into consideration in the event of a claim.(i'm not 100%sure though) It was 135 per month, 808per 6 months. There is also AOE or add on equipment coverage available to piggy back with collision and other than collission coverage. It is not as blanketing as custom car coverage, but it works good for wheels and stereos.

I looked into getting this for my stang a while back. The only place I could find was StateFarm, but they will on do it for trucks :confused: . They also told me that if I were to get it appraised, and if something happened to the car, they would replace the mods on a "case-by-case" basis :rolleyes: Right now, I just have the min insurance so I can get her on the road. She will see less then 500 miles a year, and I can't see spending over 200 a month for that.

Any independent agent that represents progressive can do it if you can find one that knows what he is doing. Stang, truck, or anything else
