Alright, this post is freaking me out. Someone get the jumbo can of Raid and have at it! Or, call the Orkin man and tell him to bring in the heavy artillary. It's time to get serious.
Sorry if I offended you, Merc. E |
I have a spider story
I live in So Cal. There are plenty of black widow's here, usually outside though. In 4th grade I had to do a report on spiders. I caught a black widow and put him in a glass jar with holes on the top and took him to class to share with the class during my presentation. My teacher asked if I could leave it there for a few nights. Well I guess either the black widow either got out, or someone let him out, but he was loose for two weeks. The school had to finally get an exterminator to come out and find him. I thought it was hillarious! From reading through these posts, I don't think most of you would find it funny, lol. Take care, Keith.

Heres a couple I just found in the garbage can... about 20 secs after that I torched them...

If you are scared of spiders, you need to move to Northern Canada. The cold is good for atleast one thing, killing all the weird bugs and spiders. They all die when you start to hit -40 and colder.

Well, hearing all these stories (and the comment about the jumbo Raid can) reminded me of a past duty I had working in the home improvement/construction field.
You know those aluminum skirts that go around the bottom of trailerhouses? Well, someone did a really crappy job of installing one about 5 years ago, so by this time it had gotten all warped and out of shape. I worked with my cousin, our grandpa was our boss. We were hired to straighten it out and replace the areas that needed it. Well, these skirts were installed from UNDERNEATH the trailers. Just imagine....dark, damp, quiet, and filled with insects, AND SPIDERS! This was the highest concentration of spiders I have ever seen in my life, nothing has come CLOSE to comparing. They were all over the place! Webs went from the bottom of the trailer to the ground like those little strings of hippy beads hanging in bedroom doorways (I know Marty still has a few of these:p). My cousin and I were each armed with a new jumbo "Garden Size" can of Raid, a flashlight, and an electric drill/screwdriver. By the time we had gone around the whole trailer, both of our cans of Raid were completely empty (we were both about ready to pass out from the fumes; there was very little ventilation), hundreds (no exaggeration) of spiders had perished, and my cousin and I had received psychological damage.  ;) Right after we were done we went on lunch break and I took a very necessary shower before heading back to work that afternoon! I guess it was good for me, facing my fears and all. But I still would have passed on the situation if I would have had the chance. I didn't even get any extra pay either! |

Err... I probably shouldn't of looked at those pictures. lol That is disturbing 6T9Pony I would of ran away like a sissy girl. :D I'm getting better though, but if I seen a tranchula or a black widow I would run my *** back to Canada. lol
Doesn't the black widow kill the male black widow after sex. I believe she bites off his head. I'm pretty sure I read this somewhere. I guess he dies happy.. I bet he says he'll call them later. I see him as a lucky spider, atleast they die, we get bitched at and have to marry tehm and spend 50 years or how ever long we live for. lol Unless your lucky and can get away. :D :D :D §am. |
My dad and I were hunting one weekend, we owned about 200 acres in BFE, TX. We were driving down a little dirt road next to our property, and out of the woods came the biggest spider I'd ever seen. It was a tarantula almost the size of the steering wheel of my dad's truck. He drove an '86 F-150. Those things don't have small steering wheels. When he ran it over, it was like running over a small animal, you could feel it when he hit it. It was the most disgusting thing I've ever seen in the wild. I have this uncontrollable fear of spiders, yet, at the same time, it is a terrible fascination.
I also have a friend that was bitten by three brown recluses in two months at his job. Once on the hand, once on the back of his right hamstring, and once on the back of his left calf. Talk about needing a new job. Caymon |

We don't have many widows here in MS but recluses are everywhere! The shop I used to work at had a seperate parts house and you almost couldn't pick anything up without seeing either a dead or alive recluse. I don't mind spiders at all. As long as they leave me alone I'm fine with them. Have you guys read or watched about the spiders in Australia? Now those would freak me out. Nasty mean lil buggers. Aggressive as crap. I've only seen one really aggressive spider and I had no idea what it was. I was working for Kia detailing cars and everyonce in a while there would be these lil spiders on the cars. I would walk around the car and they would actually follow you around. Made me kinda nervous so they usually got blasted with the pressure washer. :) I've only seen a scorpion in the wild once. I was in TX at a truck stop. It was pretty cool. I watched it hunt and kill a bug. Childish tendancies? Me? No never! Oh and praying mantis kick arse. I would love one of them as pet. OK that came out longer than planned so I'll shut up now.

I have a major case of arachnophobia...even just reading this post has my toes curled and shivers up my spine! EWWW! Unfortunately, here in Oklahoma....spiders are EVERYWHERE. We have all the nasty indigenous arachnids we can stand. Because the weather is starting to cool down, we are being infested with wolf spiders. They are not poisonous, but they do have very painful bites that can swell up pretty bad. The worst is that, true to their names, they live and hunt in packs. They also get pretty big. We have tons of brown recluses and I don't know how many times those vile little creatures have bitten me. Black widows and tarantulas are common here, but most seen in the more wooded areas. There is an area of Oklahoma that has a tarantula migration every year....nothing but miles of tarantulas seen.....talk about CREEPY!!
Because of my severe arachnophobia, I can’t get close enough to one to squash it, so I have found that Castrol SuperClean works great to kill the little buggers! :D Luckily, my 6 year old comes to mom's rescue and will squash them when I am cornered. This topic has me totally itchy. |
Funny you mention using Castrol Super Clean ... I thought I was the only one ! Its the best bug spray i've ever found ... It'll put a big spider legs up quicker than any bug spray i've found.
We have tons of Black Widows in So Calif. I could go out in my back yard right now and find a half dozen of them easily. They aren't usually an agressive spider, but if you put your hand near one by accident they will put a hurtin on you ! You can always tell a Black Widow web, its a tangled mess with no pattern. If you touch it you'll know in an instant because it feels like your tugging on little steel strands ... its considered pound for pound one of the strongest substances there is. In fact Northrop used the stuff for cross hairs on bombsites during WWII My God i'm sounding like an episode on the Discovery Channel ! |

I watched "8 legged freaks" yesterday. That movie had some cool spiders in it, other than that it sucked.
