Question Nitros? To show up the kids at school?

Hey dudes,
Hey I have a 85 Mustang GT with a 5 speed. The mustang is just a daily driver. But i was thinking of putting some Nitros in it. The kids at school think their jap cars are so fast with the turbos and supers in their 4 bangers. Well, i know i could beat them now but, i wanna show them when i have nitros. I was thinking of about a 75 hp show just for emergencies. I don't need anymore then that. But i was wondering, do i have to do any mods to my car besideds the nitros install itself? The car already have forged pistons. And what do you think the kit would cost for NOS or Edelbrock?

Thanks for the help!

First off don't ever call it nitros. That reminds me of that arcade game "OFFROAD" with the trucks in it, ya know? LoL... Anyway. 2nd how do you know you could beat them now, if they have superchargers and turbo's? I've seen some really quick honda's, like 11, 12's quick (not very many, and especially not kid's in high school.) A whole nitrous set-up is going to cost quite a bit($800 at least), if you want to do it the "right" way. Nitrous kit, purge bottle heater, gauge, etc......And you do know once you hit the button once...there is no turning back, you'll quickly find yourself becoming a nitrous junky. And everyone knows a 75 shot doesn't last, it quickly gets up'd to at least a 150 shot. So what all have you done to your car? Tell us your mod's and we'll help you beat them maybe a lil bit cheaper than what a nitrous set-up would cost. Justin.

/me hits the nitro feverishly trying to win a race in "offroad"

Kidding aside, 1bad is right. My 75 shot lasted 3 weeks before going with 150... Nitrous is fun BUT if used improperly, you WILL f/u your car. Read up everything you can, dont cut any corners, and you can have a hell of a time with it.

Since you are carbed, it will be a little cheaper..not much.
I think the NOS kit is about $400
But you would want all the goodies with it too.
A remote bottle valve is VERY nice to have while on the street, you cant leave the bottle open all the time (kills the solinoids) so I would definatly get that if I were you.
You might want to look into getting a new clutch, and replace any weak link you might think you have in the drivetrain.

I wouldn't want to mess with the N20 on a carbed car, but that's just me.

It would be cheaper to get a 87GT engine (there is one at Louie's in Champlin for $450, you can probably talk them down) and swap that in. It's got better heads, and more potential to modify. The EFI parts on the engine you can sell for a few bucks, use the headers and go to dual exhaust. Get a good intake manifold and carb and you can really pick up some power.

On the other downside, you have a 7.5" rear end. It's weak compared to the 8.8" that came on the 1986 and later GT's. Again, I think Louie's has 2 or 3 of the Fox 5.0's on hand. That means they also have the 8.8" rear ends and all that stuff too. You may want to think about talking to them on a large purchase. It'll be just as cheap as the N20 kit (when properly done), and you'll get good power, and better reliablilty out of it.

Why wouldn't you? Just curious.

Unit , why not just get a set of E7 heads off a 87 and up 5.0 enstead of getting a whole new engine? True the 87 and up cars could run more cam, but that really isn't a factor at this point.

Also why wouldn't you mess with spray on a carbed car?

pxcr 600, I would go with a intake, carb, and full exhaust before I added nitrous. Try E-Bay you can usually find good deals on there. I would also replace that 7.5 inch rear end with a 8.8 before I started to add a lot of power
