Should I drop my HUMANITIES Class?

OK this sounds lame but I need advice on dropping a class. Keep in mind I've never ever dropped a class before! OK, we only have 4 weeks left BUT I have 4 papers to write! I don't mean like 2 pagers... I mean like 17 pagers. AND on top of that... I have 4 other classes (2 of which have papers due and the other 2 have final portfolios to due). Everyone keeps saying "you made it this far so don't drop it now." If I stay in I'm going to almost kill myself... what should I do?!?!?!

As a 36 year old, I think you should stick with it, and give it your best shot.

If I was your age, I'd say ditch it and concentrate on what matters the most to you.

lol Chris I don't think that helped at all... lol =) But I'll take the approach from someone your age. If this class has nothing to do with your future yet is going to effect it in a bad way, I say drop it. If you need this course, I think you should stick in there. Hell if all else fails just slip your teacher a $50 and tell him/her to pass you.

I never went to college but i was with my G/f (now my wife) through her 4 years at Depaul universty. She stuck it out with the insane papers she had to write and graduated early last year. She loves it because her friends that went to college for a social life are still there on the 5 year plan while she is starting her life. It all pays off in the end.

Sure, you could drop, but that's a lot of bills down the drain, 'cause I doubt if they're still refunding. I used to put off my papers until the week before they were due. I'd confine myself to the library with all my sources scattered around me, pop a good CD in the computer with some headphones, and crank 'em out. It sucked, but I got them done.

I never considered dropping a class. For one, it cost $250 a semester hour where I went to undergrad., and for another, if I had to push at the end, I always figured it was my fault for waiting so long to get things done. Believe me, I understand how busy life can get, and I know exactly how you begin to feel towards the end of the semester. I'm there right now, in fact, except I can't drop my grad courses .

Just stick it out, clear your calander for the next couple of weeks, and take 'em one paper at a time.

Key word there was "almost" kill myself. Nobody ever drowned in sweat and 4 weeks is plenty of time to do this. I got an "A" on a term paper on knee injuries three years ago (Sports injuries class" and I did the whole thing in one night. (20 pages with references) Finished up at about 4:00am and turned it in at 9:00. The point is you'd be surprised what you can accomplish when the pressure is on like this. It's going to take a big commitment but when it's all said and done, college is an endurance test to start with. Out in the real world, your new boss wants to see if you could stick with the torture of college for however many years you endured it. They could care less what you learned, but that you finished it. College doesn't prepare you for the working world through what they teach but rather give you the essentials to know how to complete a project through perserverence.
I offer a teaching degree as an example, 144 hours for the degree. ONE semester of Methods of teaching. One little lousy class on what it actually takes to conduct a classroom. All the rest is background.

I've been in this situation before. In fact, I'm in the middle of a 19 credit-hour semester between two colleges , and I'm acing every single class except Calculus II. The reasons for that are numerous, but mostly because the professor is German, and his thick accent you can almost cut with a knife. I love calculus, and math in general for that matter, but this guy is a complete 'tard when it comes to explaining things to an American (in English, that is). Basically, he just whizzed through the first 2 chapters we were supposed to understand, so everything is "kind of" understood...in a fuzzy kind of way. By that point, I absolutely knew I couldn't pass with the kind of grade that I need to keep my GPA where I need it. I plan on getting an IW, which is an instructor withdrawl. The way I look at it, at least I took good notes, and when I retake the class (with an American professor), I KNOW I will ace it.

You have to look at what options you have available. Is there any way (really) you can do these reports, and have them done on time? Is it within your budget to drop this class? Do you have financial aid that doesn't allow you to drop? If you KNOW you can't possibly do all the work required, honestly have a talk with the prof and see if A) he can cut you a deal, or B) ask him if he recommends that you withdraw. You should absolutely talk with him first though, and IN PERSON.

THE WORST THING YOU CAN DO IS NOTHING. Take this from someone who knows. Dropping a class really isn't THAT big of a deal, but it's not something you want to do on a regular basis, either. If you just figure, "oh well, just an E on a report card," you're dead wrong. Having an E means a ZERO is entered into your GPA, and that is harder than anything to get cleaned away. I'm working right now on that, too. It's difficult, but I have to start somewhere. Hopefully a year from now, I'll be transferring into the University of Michigan and start classes to get my BSEE. That's totally dependent on if I can keep the GPA up. If not, I'll be asking if you want fries with your McNuggets.

You really should have started on those papers earlier....but I still suggest you work your arse off for the next week to get at least half the load done....i also try not to sign up for writing based classes...lol

During my "time" in college, I took an 18 week business law course in 9 weeks of summer school. The Instructor tolds us we were all nuts. YOU CAN DO IT! Hang in there..... It's seems useless now, but you NEVER know. I hated math and algebra, but now find it necessary in my everday job working with Qualified Pension Plans (I was a Computer Science, Micro-Computer Applications Major and wonder daily, how did I get into Pension Administration??????????)

Better to fail and have tried, than to quit. I have a few bad grades on an otherwise great 3.89 grade average from College...Your choice in the end though!

OK guys I think I said the wrong thing... I didn't procrastinate (spelling?) on those papers. The class is a combination of 5 Chapter Papers and 5 Unit Summaries. THAT'S TEN PAPERS IN ONE CLASS!!! Not to mention only 16 weeks to do it in.

ANYWAYS I guess I'm gonna stick it out and let you guys know how I did later...


PS - I'm considering the $50 idea...

I'd say stick it out. I know my one paper will be nothing in comparison, but my teacher gave us a research paper at the beginning of the semester that said it needed to be 7 pages long. Two days before it was due she noticed this and said how it actually has to be 22 pages long. Doesn't seem right but apparently she's allowed to do that. If it's possible, do it. You'll feel pretty good about it when it's all done.

I remember there being a drop deadline at about the midterms. Drop after that and it's an 'F'. Maybe work with some others in the class, proof and edit each other's papers. It would probably go a lot faster. Good Luck
