Question Engine question about smoke...


uh-oh... what does blue smoke mean coming from the engine and the rear?

Blue smoke??? Never heard of "Blue smoke"! If it is black, then you are running too rich (too much gas and not enought air). If it is grey, then you are burning oil. The closestest thing I can think of is somehow you coolant is getting into your cylendars. Hope this helps.

Actually Blue smoke is the indicator that more than healthy amounts of oil are bieng burnt somewhere during the combustion proccess. It will be a blueish gray smoke. You would definietly notice a blue color in it.

Does it only do it when you start it up or all the time. If it only does it when you start it the valve seals are probably no good, if it does it all the time you may need a set of rings.

This is what i've personally learned about smoke from a tail pipe:
Blue is oil, whether is leaking past the rings or the valve guides
Black is excessive fuel
Whitish/gray smoke usually either a blown headgasket (huge amounts of smoke) or condensation thats evaporating, or just normal exhaust on a cold day.
