exhaust

hey guys & gals. quick question. i have a '02 GT conv and i am looking to change the stock exhaust on it. all i am going to do is change the mufflers. i have heard that magnaflows are a good one to buy and then of course you have your diehard flowmaster fans. personally i have been a flowmaster fan in the past. if i go flowmasters do i go 40 or 50 series? i don't want it too loud inside. or do i go with magnaflows. what is going to give it that deep everybody knows it's a mustang sound? all suggestions are greatly welcome. :)

If you go with flows, I'd go with the 40 series. I have the American Thunder flows, and that's a 40 series.

The 40 series will be louder than the 50 series. :)

Get a catback. A little more money, but a cheap install or a do it yourself job. Much more clean installation as there is no welding.

And you will get better exhaust flow because you will be going from 2 1/4" factory bent pipes (tend to have a crimping effect in the bends) to a 2 1/2" mandrel bent (with no crimps in the bends). If you want that sound, I would go with MAC or FLowmaster. If you just want loud, go with SLP.

flowmasters for sure you can always tell when a flow master equiped stang drives by

I agree, Flowmasters definately has the Mustang sound. I had what used to be called 3 chamber, which I think would be the 50 series. I now put on the 40 series with Delta flow. It is a little louder, but not much more than my old 3 chamber. I also have a convertable, and I thought the noise would be too much, but it hasn't been bad at all.
Good luck,
Brad

50's are quieter

3 chambers are definitely quieter with out any, or at least much, increased back pressure. I use the 50 series and can't stand much more noise than I have now. Of course, I don't have any cats as I drive an antique (LOL).

K&N and a cold air kit, ignition, larger throttle body & maf, gears (not more H.P. but definitly the best "seat of the pants" mod), nitrous or other power adder, the list goes on and the price goes up.;) . I'm sure someone else will add to the list.

Well, since you said "small add-ons" I would say this is a pretty complete list:

1 - Gears (4.10s) - about $500 installed. No HP gain, but increases performance greatly. Like adding 30-40 hp.

2 - Under Drive Pullies - About $200 installed. 8 - 10 hp

3 - Cold Air Kit w/ K&N - $60 - $250 depending. 0 - 15 hp depending on which one and what you believe. The higher priced ones don't add more hp, just look better

4 - Plenum and larger throttle body - $400 or so. Easy enough to install. 9 hp...proven

5 - X Pipe. $200 - $400. 5 - 15 hp depending on the model. You need to research this depending on your other plans for exhaust.

6 - Chip or Programmer. $200 - $400. 5 - 15 hp depending on your car mostly. Autos see better performance improvement because these devices will help the way the car shifts gears.

7 - Nitrous. $400 - $1000. Safely up to about 100 hp. Biggest bang for the buck.

All hp values are actually rear wheel hp, so hp at the flywheel is about 15% higher.
