Rule #1: Don't drive through the water box.

Rule #2: Don't even think about using it if you have street tires.

Rule #3: Don't burn out past the start line. Who do you think you are John Freaking Force??

Rule #4: You run with the helmet on, chin strap done, and windows up.

Rule #5: If you overstage (past the lights) back all the way out and try again. You cannot back into the staged position, I've seen people launch in reverse this way.

Other than that, go to the track and make a mental note of all the rookie mistakes people make. If you can get down the track without getting yelled at by the officials, its a victory the first time. Then get back in line and worry about going fast.

Talking :)

I hate wearing a helmet, but do anyways...makes me clausterphobic.
When I ran MOMS car at the Nats...it was wierd...to me its harder lauching from an automatic than a standard. That Gas/brake thing...i'll take a clutch anyday!!! Her car looked like it was convulsing when I was staging.
ya, skip the waterbox. and just lay into it....nice thing about an auto. thou, no shifter and having to pay that much attention to the gauges.....

Default HELMET story...

All this talk of wearing a helmet has given me flashback to '98 when I had finally broke the 11 sec barrier in my stang... Ran an 11.xx and the officials tracked me down in the pit area and told me I couldn't run unless I had a helmet. Well, I didn't even own a helmet at the time, so I had to use the rental helmet they have for $5, which I thought to myself, "yuck!" But, I wanted to go again so I strapped it on and headed for the staging lanes.

LOL, I did my burnout and staged... the tree came down and BAM! I dropped the hammer and my head went flying into the back seat, it felt like, and as I reached for second gear, nothing was there (I was grabbing air)... needless to say, I missed second gear and had to abort the run, lol. I'll never forget that!

I was pissed, but LMAO at the same time!!! Geez

Marty, I'd say Deuce has given you the best pointers thus far...

You could always watch my wheelstand video again to get an idea of how not to make a pass down the 1320, lol.

If you decide to run a DR, then yeah, heat em up in the box and roll out under power until they grab... then stage immediately and let 'er rip! ...and most importantly HAVE FUN!!!

I guess I'm thinking about when I run my car. I have reg. street tires...so I skip the box...and i was so gimpy in Moms car, not being used to an auto, I was a little uneasy....only done it a few times myself in my own car....
Just comparing what Ive noticed different from a stick and an auto. Guess whatever one is used to.
have a great time....

Actually don't wait for the third amber, you will be sleeping. As long as you aren't in eliminations, try taking off on the second yellow. Human and car reactions added together make for slow responses sometimes.

Hopefully by eliminations (if you are running in them, such as bracket racing) you will have figured out the tree. Don' t be afraid to red light during test & tune. Cutting good lights can win you a trophy and or money if you are consistent.

Also like what was stated, do not go through the water box with street tires. Go around and back up to before the water starts and clean the tires off (quick burnout), just to get the dirt off and to get some of that good sticky rubber on your tires.

There are so many more things that could be said, but sometimes you need someone at the track to help.

But don't get discouraged, its all about having fun no matter what happens. The first time out I almost won my bracket and $500. Because of my inexperience, I lost.

If they'll let us, I'll take you down the track in my car for a run. If not, then I'll hop in your passenger seat and guide ya through it.

The Deuce gave good advice.

Although, I doubt your car will be fast enough to REQUIRE a helmet.

Ultraflo, 11.99 or faster for a helmet? Is this track not NHRA sanctioned? Around here, its 13.99 or faster for helmet, and 11.99 or faster is a roll cage (13.99 for verts)

Marty, maybe this year it'll be you winning the nitrous kit

Some tracks down here require helmets regardless of ET, that's why I mentioned it.

Sounds like you've never been to Cordova. It's an IHRA track, btw. I didn't have a cage either, just a helmet and the factory seat belt, lol... they're some pretty easy going guys there. Unless you have a 'vert or T-tops, you can get by w/out a helmet.

MCR's (Havana, IL) idea of teching your car involves you filling out a tech card and handing it in at the concession stand! Not a single tech official looked at my car the one time I went there. Another thing worth mentioning about that 'hole' of an 1/8mi. track is that, when you pull into the burnout box, you pull into a sort of dip in the cocrete. Also, half of the track is concrete and the other asphalt... real high tech track there. Oh, and my mph was off by +10mph on every run, lol. You oughta go there sometime. ...maybe not!

That's exactly how it is at HRP. They have a guy with white windshield marker (shoe polish) who takes your card and gives you a number. The only thing he looks at is where he is going to write the number.
