Actually it wasnt quite that way when Ford mentioned making the next Mustang a Front wheel drive car (The Probe). It was more like people writting in and telling Ford what they thought about that idea.
There may of been a surge in sales, but it wasnt like they started flying off the "Shelves". It was more like with the current Mach 1 thats soon to come out. The Public voiced its opinion.
As for giving the Mustangs its name sake, and its appeal, if it wasnt for the immense demand and popularity when it came out, the Mustang wouldnt be the legend that it is now. It would probably be a Name plate that is no longer used. There are a ton of factors that make the Mustang what it is today, theres no one certian thing.
If you look into the Legendary Muscle Mustangs of the past, Most have trophies in Road Racing... 65 Shelby GT 350, Boss 302 are the first that come to mind, and those two are usually the first mentioned.
