Post My 4.6 Versus Late 80's modded LX 5.0.

On the way home from work tonight, I got into a sweet little race with a late 80's LX 5.0.

I'm sitting at an intersection, waiting to turn right onto Skibo Rd when I hear something revving. I look in my rear view mirror and see a set of Fox-Body headlights flying up on my rear. The car sounded pretty good. I wait till the intersection is clear enough for us to both to pull out.

I turn onto Skibo and keep it in first, waiting for this guy to pull up beside me, instead of matching my 5 MPH speed, and pulling up beside me, he just takes the right lane and floors it.

His rear wheels were about at my front bumper when I floored it. In about 2 seconds I'm even with him. He chirps alittle going into second. I'm still in first winding out, shifting at 5800 RPM. I got a little to quick off the clutch and jerk the rear wheels loose into second. My rear wheels were right next to him. He gains like a foot because of my spin. Be the time I'm into the 5400-5500 RPM range in Second his front bumper was about at my tail lights. I hear him Chirp again going into Third. I wind my baby out to 5700 RPM and shift into third, the car heaves (wanting to break traction) and keeps trucking. At about 80 MPH I had half a car length on him. We both shut it down because the light up ahead was red and had traffic around.

We pull up next to each other. He looks over and nods his head with a grin of approval. He asks if I want to let the intersection clear then run em. I hesitate for a second, then say "Sure man. Why not!"

"My friend here (he had a passenger) will yell go." he said.

The intersection clears and we sit there, no traffic behind us. "GO" his friend yells. By the time the guy got "G" out, I was on it. Got a good start, no spin, no bog, JUST HOOK AND HAUL. I got about a half a car length there. I kept glancing at the rear view. I shut down at 90 MPH. Winning by about a car lenght, maybe a car and a half.

At the next light, he just shakes his head, looks over and says, "Man I got no excuses. I just flat out got my a$$ handed to me."

"Please tell me your not stock!" he says.

I tell him what I have. "Thats IT??????" he aksed. I wondered what he expected me to have or say.

I ask him what he had, and he said he was to embarressed to say what all he had "Lets just say more than you got" was all he said.

Hey Tim C, if you read this man, have you seen someone that looks like Boyd kinda, driving a late 80's Meduim Blue LX 5.0. Sounds kinda like 3 chambers and an Off-Road Pipe. First time I've seen that guy or that car around.

Thumbs up

LOL, high 14's on a stock 5.0. Jeez... here we go again. All my car had was exhaust and a K&N. No freebies, needing a tune, and 140k on it. Got 14.19. With a horrible Z spec 1st gear and 2.73's. I'll admit, for some reason, they don't all seem to be as fast.

Nice kill Mercury!

Nice run Mercury. The closer runs are always the most fun ones . You seem to be a good driver.

A lightly modded late 80's LX 5.0 with a good driver is no doubt AT LEAST in the low 14s so you either gotta be in the very high 13s or very low 14s (BTW what is your best time?).

If the guy chirped his tires in 3rd, I'd guess that was a manual and not auto.

Fox Body, you just reminded me. The guy sked me if my car was a Five speed like his. I really enjoy a good clean race like that, especially when it was close.

As for the driving part, I'm a pretty good driver for the most part (Except for my spin catching second during the first run), but I think it had more to do with the car this time than the driving ability. He seemed to be a decent driver.

Its hard to find some one here in Fayetteville who actually knows how to race. Most people think racing is when you bounce of the Rev limiter then slam into the next gear spinning tires. There are only a few I know of at the hang out who actually know what racing is about, and how to do it. I hope I dont sound arrogant, I'm not saying I'm a great driver or anything (I know I am though j/k ).
