Post Friendly Debate: What do Lightnings run?

Dan might be able to chime in on this one. But what have you guys seen Lightnings run at the track? Any modifications?

Thanks.

Well I can tell you that you will get different answers from everyone. I've seen bone stock ones run high 13's on the stock tires. I've also seen ones with air filter, exhaust, DR's running consistent 14.20's.

Personaly I think a stock one would run low 14's with a possible dip into the 13's with good driving and weather. Last Wednesday there were 2 or 3 with, I'm assuming, basic bolt on stuff and slicks running 13.3-13.0's.

Two of them in my home town. One supposedly modded and other one stock. Non modded ran mid 14s. The one with only a smaller pulley on the super charger ran a 13.7. But i don't know these guys well so who knows.
Faster than my car is all I know hehe

I've only made two drag strip pass in my Lightning thus far. However, the first time I did it was in the middle of summer and 90 degrees out. Not to helpful for a blower motor. But, it still turned 14.3 in the quarter on worn street tires. The second was in the fall with cool temps, say 65 degrees, and it went 13.9

Also, the truck was bone stock at the time of the first run. More or less on the second too. All I did between the two times I ran it was install a Borla cat-back kit. The Borla kit is almost worthless for a HP increase. Maybe 4 HP. Just sound a little better exhaust wise and has nice looking chrome tips now..

My friend has a 99 with a custom burned SuperChip, exhaust, ram-air and nothign else as far as I know and on D.O.T's not sure of the exact size has went 12.8 @ 106, 13.0-13.1 @ 104mph are the norm, not bad for a 4700lb truck? He is sponsered by Superchips and burns them for SuperChips out of his house for Lightnings.

I've seen low 14's and high 13's in good weather. The 2001 lightning gets a boost in hp and torque.

So basically, the Lightning is faster than a GT Mustang and almost as fast as a Cobra even with it's massive weight....plus you can haul stuff. With this new info, I would think more people would consider a Lightning, even with it's higher price tag, over a GT or a Cobra.

Yeah, I wish they'd help the Cobra out a little, it'd tick me off if I bought a new Cobra and was getting outrun by a new Lightning.

Oh well.

inferno, why? you're comparing a truck that won't go any faster than 11s (with a healthy shot of juice on top of it) to a car with a much shorter stroke that is also n/a ? of course the lightning is gonna get up good from the factory. low end boost combined with a motor that has a larger stroke than bore. cobras have no low end, and combined with 3.27s stock vs stock it should be a good race. add gears to both, and then mod for mod after that the cobra will win.

besides what is the payload on Ls, like 500 pounds?

LOL!!!!!! I am sure that you can make a Lightning run faster than an 11. You can make almost ANY vehicle run an 11. If someone really wanted to, I am sure they could build a single digit Lightning. Also, with equal mods done to both a Cobra and a Lightning(heads, intake, exhaust, chip, gears), the Lightning should win for the same amount of money simply because the Cobra is N/A and the Lightning is blown....and you can haul stuff.

yes they could build a single digit lightning and they have. except it is a tubeframe. so who cares?

last i saw on the L msg board the guy was jetting 150hp, has a list of mods a mile long and still just cracked 11 seconds. maybe he is faster now. i've also seen some kooky dual blower setup also. what a waste.

I've seen them run consistently 13.8 and 13.9. These were 2 different Lightnings with the plastic still on the seats and sticker price in the window. Maybe the dealer wanted to have a little fun with them before they were sold.

I just recently read somewhere that the Lightning will get another boost in hp. Needless to say, as I own a GT, I'm pissed that the Mustang is taking a backseat to a $30+K specialty pick up truck when it comes to performance upgrades. Get me some more horsepower. Christ, Cadillacs with the Northstar system have more hp and the Lincoln coupe had 275hp back in 1994 with the 32v mod V8. Ford, wake up!

Well, the F-Bods are going bye-bye for a while, so why upgrade the Mustang if there really is no competition for it....but then again, where is the Lightnings competition?? Maybe Toyota can come out with a twin turbo Tundra....call it the Tsunami....maybe I should call them with that idea.

Don't get me wrong. It's all good for the Lightning. Just, how about sharing some of the wealth with the Mustang. The Cobra is suppose to have 320hp and the GT 260hp. Why couldn't have Ford put a detuned version of the 32v modular engine in the GT, like the Lincoln's, except give us 290hp or so. That wouldn't have been difficult.
