Talking Fun in the snow!

Thursday I went snowboarding for the first time with one of my nephew's and a friend of ours. Amazingly enough I picked it right up really quickly for never even snow skiing. I guess it's because the balance thing has always come natural to me. I grew up skating and skate boarding and stuff.

I started right away on the intermediate II hill. After several hours of boarding they thought I was doing well enough they dragged me over to the advanced intermediate hill though. Wow, much bigger... I wasn't to sure about it once I got up there.

So, I start down the hill. At first I did a couple carves turning the board from one side to the other to zig zag a bit, which kept the speed down. However, I then ended up pointing perfectly straight down the hill (nose first). I kept going faster and faster and faster... and FASTER! Next thing I knew, I was saying my prayers as my eyes were getting big. I was going so fast my much more experienced friends could not keep up with me. They said I just kept getting smaller and smaller... and, had to be going at least 60 mph.

I was afraid at that point to try to turn the board as I thought I would wipe out, so I was simply trying the best I could to stay evenly balanced and straight. I was about 3/4's of the way down the hill when suddenly CRASH! I don't know what happened, I guess I either caught some snow on the front of the board or it turned on me some, but I face/chest planted it going like 60 mph straight down the hill. My friends said all they saw was a huge explosion of snow right after I went down. I hit so hard it knocked the wind right out of me! I think I laid there for ten minutes as every inch of my body was on fire.

I had a blast and picked it up quick... but, oh my god am I sore! I didn't know I could hurt in so many place like this. hahahah I'm sure I'll be going back for more though, as I just bought my own gear!

Here's some pics... click on them for the bigger ones.

A lot of these guys on here haven't experienced the joys of an over 30 body, but their day will come! Sounds like fun, though. If you go out and do something that makes you hurt like that afterward you know you had a great time

OMG dude, you said it! It's amazing how much things that would have hardly phased you when you were in your early to mid-twenties hurts once you get into your thirties. sigh

Heavy snow here in Houston on Christmas eve. We get snow here about every 15-20 years LOL, and usually not too much. It did actually snow here though. Just look at the picture.

I saw a picture in our newspaper of a snowman on the beach at Galveston. I wanted to drive all the way down there (5 hours) just to see that in person! We didnt get the snow or ice here, but frigid cold for East Texas, it warmed up to mid 50's yesterday and I spent the day washing 3 Mustangs!

Yeah, it snowed in Laredo, TX for the first time since 1978. Temp got down to -6 here on Christmas Eve.

Great pictures, Dan. Now you should head over to this half of the country and go skiing/boarding in some "real" mountains! Haha.

I was talking to a friend today, she said it snowed in Brownsville and Harlingen and McAllen. That is where a lot of seniors go every winter to escape the snow up north, we call them Snowbirds. I bet there were a lot of PO'd old people down there!! She said she heard it hadnt snowed in Bronsville since like 1918 or something.

Yeah, the places here are mostly former land fills turned into skiing facilities I think. I go to Alpine Valley here. If I really get into boarding... or skiing, since I've never done that yet and want to also... then, perhaps someday I'll go to a real ski resort and mountain.

Its funny how it doesn't snow at all around my house. But 30 miles away the roads are closed because of too much snow on the mountains.

I think Gatlinburg has a 4 foot base on the ski slope and it will be 60 degrees in the valley tomarrow.

Went boarding again yesterday. I also bought a new board last week... and, wow... what a difference. I love the new board, it's so much easier to control and has a lot better performance. I usually go with one of my nephews. We did some video with the digital camera too... check them out:

Anyone else here snowboard?
