Gaming with Win2000 Server?

A friend of mine is running his home network with 3 computers, all in all they're all right all he has to do is install the o/s and go from there. He wants to run Win 2000 Server (he's already got a copy) or Win 98. The thing is that he needs to keep control over the network because of his family and friends that are over. I suggested going to Win XP, but he doesn't want to have to get the software, he'd rather use what he's got. Any suggestions?

yes. forget WINBLOZE all together. tell him to use LINUX. if he is not familiar with Linux, use 98SE or NT

He doesn't have an experience with Linux, and I don't have much experiece with it either, and since he wants to stay with windows, I'll take your advice on 98SE or NT. Thanks..

Use Windows 2000 Pro. It's much more stable than NT by far and has more advanced networking and security.

Dan, basically its NT actually. havent used it though. not planning to either. i am slowly leaning to Linux. boy i hate microsoft!

Win2K is based on the NT Kernal, but is much more stable than NT 4.0. It also has all the interface niceties of Win98 and true PnP... Win XP is basically Win2K, but with a whole new interface design and a lot of extra built-in utilities and apps.

Right now Mustang Works main server is a Linux based box, and the secondary server (which runs the forums) is a Win2K server. However, right now I am changing around my hosting configuration and soon we'll have multiple Win2K servers only. The Linux machine is going bye-bye.

Thanks for the advice. He decided to use the Win2K just to keep things simple for himself. I just hope he knows what he's getting into. Myself I'll stick with XP until I get more comfortable with Linux.

Win XP *shudder* Win 2K big *shudder* Yuck! I know the ups and downs of both. I'll stick with 98 SE thank you! (heh I work for Gateway and get to work with all of them. Even had a 3.11 call the other day.)

Were using Adv Server at my work and its pretty nice. You dont have all the nice built in drivers of XP. XP Pro would be nice, it gives you pretty good control. More than enough that youd need for that small network. Also 2000 starts up SLOW, and a lot of software doesnt work on it. Mostly virus scan and cd burning software.

Try it out, if you dont like it format again and install something else!

Dan, what would be the reason you would ditch LINUX over Windows? i would like to hear your reasoning.

there is no reasoning behind his madness :)
