Price check in aisle 6...
as some of you may know i'm replacing my tranny this winter i have been searching high and low for a T56 that will work in a fox body... well i found one!!! they do make them with the mechanical speedo drive to work in the older/fox mustangs... i found them at a place that sells them brand new for $2100, is that a good price??? he is local so i don't need to have it shipped... and he said that if i can't do the work myself, then he will put it in for $400... now i plan on doing the work myself, so all i should need is a new driveshaft... but i thought his tranny price was really good am i wrong???

You may want to talk with D&D Performance about the T56. They have conversion kits and can discuss all that is involved in the swap. Very knowledgable folks. Also, they have very good prices.
Secondly, you will most likely need a different bellhousing, a GM stlye clutch, possibly a new flywheel and a different tranny crossmember. (and a different drive shaft as you stated). If cost is no object, then the T56 sounds like a good idea. However, I think that you will find that the complete conversion is very expensive as compared to a Tremec 3550 or TKO or TKO II conversion. Just my thoughts. Keep us posted on how it all progresses. i have thought about going with a tremec, but they don't have the final gear ratio i am looking for... i want to drop the RPMs as much as i can on the highway, cause i do a ton of highway driving, and i want to run a set of gears, like 3.73s or 4.11s, i'll give them a call though, thanks
