Will The Gas Tank Fit ! ! !

Hi Guys

Got my '66 almost all in pieces (engines is out) burnishing the engine well, getting all the undercoating off and down to the bear metal. In order to paint it the same color as the car.

My car has a 16gal. gas tank.

A friend of mine says, " . . . you can put a 22gal. gas tank from a 1970 Mustang and that will give you 6 extra gallons."

I sure like the idea. However, what I'm asking you experience guys out there is ~ WILL IT WORK

I don't mind loosing space in my truck. Hey I'm talkng about 6 extra gallons here :D

Do I have to mig it to fit in the original space where my ol gas tank was

I need your imput guys and any things I should loooook out for in buying the tank if you guys think that I should.

THANK YOU ALL WHO HAVE HELPED ME IN THE PAST AND STILL ARE HELPING ME TODAY :)

GOD BLESS YOU & YOUR FAMILIES

First of all i like the idea of the 6 extra gallons of fuel, but i probably wouldnt try it because you dont really know what this is gonna do to the fuel gauge even if you put the sender out of the '70' in the tank and if you was able to put the 66 sender in the 70 tank how would you know if it was gonna be accurate. Another problem too is if you get the 70 tank under the 66 it has got to be a deeper tank so its more than likely gonna be hanging lower than the rear valance unless you cut the trunk out and raise it up. Maybe one of these guys has played with this before and can give you some tips. keep us posted if you decide to do it... ;)

Re: Will The Gas Tank Fit ! ! !

I have not actually done it. I do think tha the 21 gal. tank protrudes some up into the trunk area without hanging down any. I would say that if I was doing it over again, I would use that 21 gal. tank. Not sure about the gas gauge sending unit, but I did have to work on my Taiwanese after market sending unit to get it calibrated even with my 16 gal. after market replacement tank.

I say, go for the 21 gal. tank and do what you need to do to make the gauge work.

I have done it.

The tank doesn't hang any lower. It comes up in the trunk several inches though.

The gauge, sure it's off. Get the correct sender, that should handle it.

I'll do it again when/if I need a tank in my 68 Cougar.

If You Did It Gearhead999 And It Worked

Hi Gearhead999 :)

I read you message and like you said you did it and it worked. Then that's good enough for me ;)

Its true the tank does rise above somewhat within the trunk, but hey

If You Did It Gearhead999 And It Worked

Hi Gearhead999 :)

I read you message. And like that you said it worked. And that's good enough for me ;)

Its true the tank does rise above somewhat within the trunk, from what I've been told by some of my fellow club members. However, none of them have done it so far. Getting 6 EXTRA GALS. OF JUICE makes my toes tingle :p

As far as the sending guage well that's another story. Don't know what I'll do with that.

Of course I want an accurate gas guage.
QUESTION:
How do I calibrate the gas guage for the '70 gas tank

Does the '70 gas tank come with the gas sender already installed it it

Thanks to all of you guys who have helped me in the past and those of you who are helping me now in my quest to learn more about auto mechanx.

GOD bless each and everyone one of you.

Re: Will The Gas Tank Fit ! ! !

Hi Rev

Just a minor correction on the size of the fuel tank offered ~ it's a 22gal. tank.
They don't make a 21gal. fuel tank.

Thank for you helpful message.

Hi Gear. . . 999

You're right it is sold seperately. However, the fact still remains; who out there has
successfully completed this project and is happy with the results i.e. dashboard fuel guage is working correctly and there's no leaks, etc, etc.

THANKS GEAR...999
And all you other great guys.

Re: Will The Gas Tank Fit ! ! !

I've put the tank in, before. No problem.

Also, leaks aren't a problem. Only the sending unit could leak.

Accurate gauge, well mine wasn't because I used the original sender. Just stayed on Full for a long time.
