Gone in 60 Seconds
I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!!!! This movie is flat out awesome! But, like everyone else that has seen it, I have to be a critic! Firs tof all, in the first chase scene, do they honestly think we would believe that a Honda Civic would keep that close to a Porsche 911 turbo? Now, if the Civic had a turbo, it would be closer than without one, but that Civic had exhaust, and intake, but no turbo. Now, jump ahead to the last chase scene, with the replica GT500. That Bimmer would not keep like it did with that beautiful car. What's more insulting is how well those crown vic cop cars were keeping up with it! Do you all feel the same way?

What do I think http://www.mustangworks.com/interact...rd/biggrin.gif I think Angelina Jolie (forgive my mispelling!) is a perfectly good reason to get into car theft and later this year a perfectly good reason to start mulling around dusty old places filled with traps, bugs, and other "icky" stuff http://www.mustangworks.com/interact...rd/biggrin.gif
Besides that, I liked Gone in 60 Seconds the whole dang way through. (When the action is good I don't sweat the details) |
I watch this movie once a weekend, at least.
In the opening scene, that is not a Civic, it is a AWD Subaru something. One of my favorite parts is when Nick is going through the alley with that cop, he hst 3rd gear and fly's by him, HOLY **** I love that! Well, thanks, now I have to go and watch it again http://www.mustangworks.com/interact...oard/smile.gif Ian ------------------ Ian Sim webmaster@stangpower.com STORED: 1988 Mustang GT "Canadian Cobra", stock, AOD, loaded LOTS OF PRODUCTS, AWESOME PRICES! dude, watch the movie again, closely. I watch it at least once a day (no life). It is a two door honda civic with a giant wing on the back.
|
in fact, i just watched it again, with the dvd, paused it, and zoomed in....definitely a honda civic. a friend of mine who worked in a honda dealership watched it too, and he said it is definitely a honda, with a body kit...look at the tail lights, you can't put different shaped ones in, you can only change the color.those are definitely honda taillights. The subaru taillights wrap around the back of the car.
|
I got the DVD for Christmas because I was spending too much on the rental. http://www.mustangworks.com/interact...oard/smile.gif My girlfriend has a 99 Civic and she is the one that pointed out the fact that the blue car in the beginning was also a Civic. Trust me, my pause button is WORE OUT from looking over and over. I just didn't want to believe that they put that in the movie as the opening race, but........they did. It is a Civic. http://www.mustangworks.com/interact...oard/frown.gif

Ok so u are telling me the civic kept up with the Porsche??? Only in a movie. I'm renting it tonite.
Damn Hollywood. They are giving the ricers HOPE.... LOL ------------------ 1997 Black Cobra Convertible. #2788 of 3088 Mostly Stock 1988 5.0 LX Convertible -Work Car...Few Mods. |
everyone now needs to go get the original gone in 60 seconds, its just as good. The beginning is like a 70s porno with dubbed over audio, but its a great movie
|
Man I laugh every time I see the civic racing the porsche. I think the firebird V6 they ride in to steal the porsche would be a better match for the F1 civic http://www.mustangworks.com/interact...oard/smile.gif
As far as the BMW and the crown vics keeping up with the 500...I don't think the 500 was all that fast in stock form. I don't know what kind of mods they have on it but I do know they have a special suspension and steering rack on it to let it handle like it does. It does have an exhaust and cam for sure. They had like 7 of them too. Watch the speedo in the movie though. It is like totally off when he is accelerating. it takes him forever to get up to 100 and then he hits the nitrous and does this knight rider turbo boost up to 200 mph or something and leaves sight of the helicopter lol. |
If a turbo Civic can't keep up with a Porsche, then neither can a Mustang.
|
it wasn't aturbo civic. no turbo on it at all. natural aspiration, and it kept up. just a movie i tell myself. And that speedometer thing, you are dead on dude. I watched the making of the movie (one of the special features on the DVD) and they said that to make it look like he was going faster than he really was, while a normal tape reel speed is 24 fps (frames per second), they sped it up to 16 fps. This makes it appear 40% faster. there were also alot of computer generated images too.
Had to add this in. Got this from a website, don't know how accurate, but figured I'd share it anyway. 428 Cobra Jet, made 355 horses. with an auto, a c-6, 0-60 was 7.0 seconds. with the top loader four and drag pack, 0-60 was 6.2. So no, it isn't the fastest car in the world, but it was one of the fastest of it's time. ------------------ 12.54 @ 110.90 1.62 60' best with old car, will let you know once i finish the transfer to the new to me car I have pictures now, and here are the specs [This message has been edited by 86LX5liter (edited 02-25-2001).] |

That's not my biggest problem with the acceleration thing.
Take a look at the tach guys. He's doing like 8k on a 428????? hehe, not a prayer. Then he hits the nitrous and accelerates from 110-160?? That'd be like 12000rpms or something. Jeez... That's a joke. As far as the Shelby GT 500SS not being very fast in stock form. All it did was spin. You'll have to look at the trap speeds to understand how hard that car can accelerate. I wouldn't doubt with the mango cam that thing had it'd run through the traps at 110. Course, you'd never see a 428 turn over 7000rpm's either. |
86LX5liter, I never said that the Civic in the movie was turbo....I was just making a general statement aimed at those that believe that you can't mod a Civic to keep up with or beat a Porsche.
|
Have you ever seen a street driven , street tired civic, that didn't have a turbo, turn 12's in the quarter? or better yet, 0-60 in 4.5 seconds on wet pavement? That is my point. The porsche was a Carrera 4 Turbo. You could hear the thing spool up over the exhaust. My point is that the civic kept up with the Porsche in those conditions, and it didn't have the mods it would have needed to do what it did. That was my point. I have seen some scary fast imports. I have been beaten by scary fast imports. You just don't see them everyday is all.

Well I've seen the movie a couple of times and I think it get's better every time. The first time I saw it was in the theatre, and I dunno about the rest of you, but whether or not a few details were way off, the movie is still sweet. I'm glad Hollywood gave Ford and the Mustang a nod with all those other sweeeet vehicles.
All in all, hopefully this will get alot of people excited about fine automobiles. And create alot of interest, especially with the younger crowd(scary too though heh). I just hope "Fast and Furious" doesn't get ricers too excited and too bold. Favorite parts: the Porsche chase in the beginning; the one night boost and pretty much everything AFTER the very first time the GT 500 appears. Even the humanly impossible quarter mile jump over the huge accident on the bridge was kinda cool heh. (and the chirp of the tires with each gear change with the sweet rumble of the engine gave me chills) BTW the soundrack is pretty sweet, good for cruisin and some hard drivin' if you ask me. |
Yeah i gotta pick up that soundtrack. One of my favorite sound bytes is whenever they show Sphynx, that deep bass they play. Awesome.
Inferno I am happy for you and your car. Truly. But did you see this movie? Your "blanket statement" had absolutely nothing to do with the thread. We were saying the Honda was NA, and kept up with a much more powerful car, that is all wheel drive, and with those two combined registers 0-60 times in the low 4 second range, with factory tires. That was the point. |
Didnt the civic have n20? dont flame me i just thought someone flipped a switch or something at the beginning, but i only seen it once.
|
oh, and for the h22 to make 400 hp na, that would mean an out put of 3 HP per cubic inch. That is almost unheard of efficiency.

negative. no laughing gas on the civic. well, I should say they never show him hitting it, and there is no surge of acceleration or RPM as there typically is with N2O

86LX5liter, first off, both Ty'97Cobra and LincoConti87 made statements basically saying that there is no way a Civic could keep up with a Porsche and my statement was geared towards them, and any other person who has this idea. Second, I have seen the movie, I have no arguements about the Civic and the reason why it shouldn't have been able to keep up without some major work(we don't really know what was done to the Civic now do we?). If the Porsche was a Carrera 4, then it wasn't turbo, and it runs 0-60 in 5 seconds. This is still faster than most NA Civics, but not all. Third, if you read my post regarding the H22, you will notice that I said that the most I think is possible is maybe 350 on race gas with no street drivability.
|
Whatever the all wheel drive turbo is, i thought that was called the carrera 4. My mistake. We don't know what was done to the civic, correct. But we do know there was no power adder, and we do know that with the manner it was performing, it was being overrated severely.

My opinion is that they wanted to have a car that looked faster than it actually was race this porche. its only in the movies....they could have used a Mustang with a jungle gym wing on the back but they used a civic. power adders or not it dosent matter. if i put that much money into a civic and that same amount into a porche, which do you think would win??????? porche exactally. this dosent make a civic cool just because it can keep up with a stock porche. its all aobut how much money you have

Hehehehe...
A 12sec N/A Civic that is a daily driver, hahahaha... God that was great. Seriously now, what does it have in it, a 350Chev? BTW even the non-turbo porche will run the 1/4 in the mid 13's. Let's see, the epitome of the ultimate rice engine, the 9000rpm 240hp S2000 can BARELY hit the 13's (when the clutch is abused to unbelievable lengths). Yet this SUPER CIVIC can do a full second better than the S2000 all motor and still retain streetability? Okay, now I'm pulling the BS alarm, you had best come up for a really, really good excuse for that statement, or a much much larger motor than stock. |
*alert* *alert* *alert* *alert*

Hey. I just watched it again. You know what I'm thinking? Kipp is egging him on, and if you have surround sound cranked, you can hear the porsche almost slow down kinda. I am starting to think Kipp wasn't on it in the scene's where the guy was keeping with him. Besides, if they used a Mustang, it would have been a closer race http://www.mustangworks.com/interact...oard/smile.gif or better yet!! I have this two cycle riding lawn mower at home. Bet I could have raced the civic. But first I would have to get a high performance windshield sticker, and one of those oil caps that adds 200 hp to the front wheels. Does anyone know where I can get racing stripes that offer the lowest coefficient drag characteristics?

Tony Frank - I laugh at your statement!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! Do you want to know why? Look at the sticker price for a Porsche Carrera 4 and then tell me that for that same amount of money you can't make almost ANY car kick the crap out of it. Also, I am not sure if you have checked aftermarket prices on Porsche's, but they are extremely expensive. How about spending a couple of thousand on an exhaust sound?
Unit and 86LX5liter, you guys don't have to believe me about the performance of a NA FWD Civic. I will try to find some videos to prove it to you. Stay tuned. |
I agree...it doesn't even matter what kind of car is in that opening scene. No car to ever come out of Japan could've kept up with that fine German engineering. http://www.mustangworks.com/interact...board/wink.gif The fact that it pulled even just for a little bit was insulting. And why the hell are these cops keeping up with Eleanor? That's such bullsh!t. That was the sweetest car I've ever seen in a movie (just barely beating out Steve McQueen's "Bullit" 1968 390 GT).

Here is another flaw in the movie: Remember when he first stole the 500, he used that special tool in the ignition switch? Later when the car stalls out on him it shows him cranking away as if there was a key in the ignition!! Where was that special tool then?? Where did he all of a sudden get a key to re-start the engine?

The whole reason why i posted was to get the point across that this is the movies. you guys can sit here and argue if a stupid civic can run a porsche.....who cares, if you own a civic, bring it, if you own a porsche, bring it. the only way to see is if you take them to the strip. so if you want to keep complaining then satisify yourself.

our argument here was that the civic did "bring it", and the movie misrepresented what the civic was capable of. This is giving the civic guys a swolen head. I don't care if you have this mod or that. If you beat me. then ytou beat me. But what i do care about is the guys that claim 400 NA HP out of a 2.2 4 cylinder, that can't back it up. Inferno tried to show video proving that imports can keep with and beat other cars. I don't disagree that some imports can beat some cars, and that some cars can beat mustangs. But what I do disagree with is the mentality that immediately follows misrepresentations much like the ones that were in this movie. That is our argument here. If you don't like reading posts such as this, and therefore don't want to participate, then why did you post?
