Help - Oxygen Sensors
Where are the oxygen sensors located on an 88 5.0?? I need to check to see if I have them. I'm going through hell right now because I need to sell my car and it has had a straight pipe on it for 8 years, I've gotten "hooked up" with smogs in the past but now I have to do it legit because of this new CA smog bullcrap.. so I have to put my original cats back on and I'm guessing I need 2 oxygen sensors.
My god, $50 each???!! If someone can tell me where exactly they're located (if I can even see them..) and maybe where I can get them for cheaper than $50 I'd be very appreciative. |

They're easy to find, right above the bend towards your engine. Yup, you only need two, I believe the newer cars need to be HEGO(heated o2 sensors) but 88's were the regular ones, which is good, cuz they're cheaper!

those are the hangers. look up in front of the crossover pipe there and you should see 2 threaded holes, those are where the oxygen sensors go into

Ugh this is frustrating. I dont see any kind of threaded holes, just the tips of the pipe like in this picture... am I looking in the right place?
What is that round thing sticking out then in between the pips in the first picture? That's been cut, I dont know what it is. Well I'm having it done so I guess they'll figure it out if I just bring them the sensors and the cats |

Look at the other end of the pipe.
Here is a bad pic of it, my h-pipe is buried underneath a bunch of stuff but you get the idea. It's on the other end right near the flange. That other tube in your pic goes to your air pump.

So its on the end that goes to the mufflers or? I dont see any holes on them. *sigh*
The part that goes to the air pump can be re-welded or something right? I should have never taken these things off in the first place. I'm payin for it now 8 years later |

The part that connects to the air pump you can actually use a length of heater hose to reconnect it, I did that 7 years ago and it's fine to this day.

Ok I feel dumb. I found the oxygen sensor holes in the pipes finally. The brackets or whatever were covering them so I didnt see them the first time. Thanks for all your help.
So tomorrow I'm taking the car to Meineke to have them put the cats back on and the sensors. I'm hoping that's all they need to do and my car will pass smog. My smog pump (new) and equipment is all still there. Anything else I should be concerned about? I have a new idle air control valve and the throttle body and injectors were just cleaned a few months ago. I found out my headers are legal so that's good. Car doesnt burn oil or anything. I'm just concerned because that car hasnt had a "real" smog in over 8 years. |
