I think a well built 289 is the way to go. I happen to know a great mechnic who could build a sweet motor for that car, at a price of course. But it would be done right, and the car would haul behind.

When you get another motor, grab an electric fan, and decent shroud. It will help keep the car cool better, and I would take a good look at the radiator.

There is a reason there are so many '65-'66 cars still around. Now don't make me drive up there and save that car from certain death at the hands of your Porsche loving Fiancee. (By the way, my first car was an '83 944.)

If I had the available cash flow, I'd be talkin to that buddy of yours about the 289.....

My first engine was a 289, it's in the garage now. My 2nd one, I have no clue, all I know is it was from a van. The one that just died was a 302.

The mechanic I have now seems to know what he's doing. It's my fiance's fault for not getting the shroud in time. The shroud we just got in the mail was $30 there was another one for $100.

An electric fan, I'll have to talk to him about that. I'll message him now. We have a clutch fan right now.

An electric fan mounts on the radiator via a shroud. You get more power from the motor (via less accesory drag) and better cooling, becaus the fan is close, it pulls air better.(his 928 may even have one)

The early cars are still around because they are well built. People love them, and they are strong enough to still be run hard if properly maintained.

The 944 was a fun car. Still haven't found anything that handles like it. Was a bear to work on, and parts were expensive. I still miss it sometime though.

If you can wait for a good motor, do so. Finding one fast and cheaper doesn't always work out, but you know that by now.

I've never heard of a fan like that. I'd like to see one. It sounds like it would work better. Is this the same one that is operated by a switch?

They are good cars. I used to have a '81 924 Turbo.

We probably should. Right now the car's waiting in their yard, mechanic yard, which is rather small. Plus the mustang is our only drivable car right now. The 928 has registration probs, the porsche he's putting the chevy in is going to be his "ricer". He'sgoing to have a porsche that'll look like a ricer car, but it'll actually be good, that's the point anyhow. My 924 got impounded, accsidentally, and the other 924 we have is sitting in storage, needs breaks and gas lines fixed, plus it's stick, I can only drive auto. So, basically, this is the only thing we have.

BTW, he lost his lisence, suspended, he got 2 speeding tickets in his 928.

I've seen Chevy's in just about everything. Saw a 350 in a 914. That car hauled behind.

I would recommend finding a Mustang shop to take care of the '66. Not to bad talk where it is, but that car should see someone who works on them all time. There is a shop down my way that only does classic Mustangs, I'll get you the number if you're interested.

By the way, a good electric fan will put the same strain on the alternator as say running the headlights and radio at the same time. Give or take a few amps.

Probably kinda far. Talked to Earle, not worth the drive to him. Especially when the problem is it needs a new engine. like right now. We'd have to get the car towed there.

I would recommend keeping your mechanical fan, and adding a temp controlled electric "pusher" fan in front of the radiator for when the stock fan isn't enough. Considering where you do a lot of your driving (at 5:09pm, it is currently 96 degrees in Bakersfield), you are probably going to want to have both.

hmmmmm, ok. I see what you're saying. (Just for the record, I don't drive the Mustang in Bakersfield too much. Generally, drive there, and then just carpool around Bako w/ friends. The main problem is going TO and FROM Bako.) Anywho, I wanna do whatever is the best thing to do to prevent it from overheating again.

Incase anyone cares, we found an engine. I'm renting a truck and driving to Bakersfield to pick it up tomarrow. I'd rather get something reliable though, buy it from Summit Racing or something like that. Or the great deal "PKRWUD" was hooking us up with. But it's his money. It's a friend of a friend kind of a deal, long block or $800. When I get more details I'll let you know.

From what I know now there is this guy, friend of Earle's who has a friend that owns a junk yard there. The friend's going to pull the engine for us. (We're giving him something in return even though he didn't ask for anything.) Then I'm driving it back to LA, where my 'stang is right now. I know I'm being pessimistic, but it's in a junk yard. And Earle's a cheapskate. Anywho... *crosses fingers*

If it was my money I'd just get done the right way in the begining.

The Valley get's pretty hot, too. :) I'm sure Earle has a plan, but if it were me, I would put the shroud in, leave the mechanical fan, and set up a pusher fan for emergencies. That way you don't have to rely on your electrical system to keep your engine cool normally, but it's there if you need it.

Either way, I'm sure you'll be fine.

Just thought I'd let everyone who cares know that we have found a engine.

It's an '84 302 long block from an '84 lincoln town car. Afriend actually found it for us and got us a deal. It'll be $650. It was impounded for a DUI and they just couldn't pay to fees to get it out. Our friend drove it and he said it ran great. But once he gets it out, he's going to test it. I still want a new one, or at least re-built. :( I get the feeling something bad is ganna happen. :(

I'm on the phone w/ AAA right now getting a truck to go pick it up. :)
