How many miles on your stang?

How many miles do you have on your car? I have and '88 and it's got 133k on it and still runs beautifully.

I change the oil every 3k and all that jazz.. keep it maintained very well.

How long will my car last without having to replace major things like the engine or tranny? Anyone got more than 200k?

84LX89GT 04-02-2003 09:43 PM

My car has 130,000 miles of severe abuse and the tranny went out at 90,000 (last owner) and i went through the bottom end of the engine and replaced the bearings while i was in there, but it still is running strong with no smoke. If you maintain your car and don't beat the bejesus out of it (like i do to my car) it should easily last you 200k.

erikd93lx 04-02-2003 10:12 PM

My brother bought his first stang, a '90, a few years ago. It had 150K on it when he bought it and over 250K when he sold it. He never had anything done to it. Even the AOD was still stock! The people who bought it pulled the motor/tranny at 300K and replaced them just for piece of mind. They totaled the car 2 weeks later :(. That is amazing if you ask me, almost unbelievable but I saw it. My old '91 has about 140K on it now but the tranny has been rebuilt and it has a bad lifter. Other than that the '91 hasn't had any problems. My '93 has been a whole different story, the motor crapped out at 70K miles, the tranny went shortly after. Now that I have a 331 in the car, I have gotten pretty used to pulling and rebuilding the T5! I have seen several other 5.0's go well past the 150K mark though. They are some of the best motors ever made in my opinion, but like everything, sometimes a bad one comes along and I happened to get a bad one with the '93 :(.

MEDIK418 04-02-2003 10:17 PM

The 89 has about 190,000 miles but everything but the radiator cap has been. . . .wait, that was replaced too. Seriously, at about 160.000 miles just about everything had to be replaced. The engine lost the oil pump drive which pretty much did the engine in as well. The transmission gave it up about then but we got by on a junk yard special till about three mopnths ago and I had to rebuild it. Funny thing though. It ran as fast at 160,000 as it did when we first got it. Tough little motors.
The Green thing has about 160,000 miles on it but the transmission finally gave in about a month ago, same thing for it. The engine was replaced twice before we got it, No. 1 had a nitrous nightmare and blowed up, the second did the same I heard. THe 331 in it now is stock as far as add-ons go. Intake, heads, MAF. . .everything stock.
These cars have some really hard miles on them. The 82, which is in retirement waiting to be pieced out, had some really hard miles on it. The Cleveland in it went about 2 years at the hands of my youngest son before it said F**kitt!!

Sicy Stang 04-02-2003 10:29 PM

Wow I'm impressed! I havent had any major replacements done and I've owned the car for 9 years. I dont beat it either. I did replace the heater core, water pump and head gaskets at one point or another. Other things just were just minor repairs. I'm kinda freaked out.. like waiting for something to go wrong. http://smilies.crowd9.com/cwm/cwm/uhoh.gif

My oil pressure gauge (stock) I dont think works very well. Sometimes it sits on the red line all day long. I've noticed this for years now. It occasionally rises up every once in a while. It makes me nervous because I think well what if my oil pump is about to go out someday, I will never know. My fuel guage is f*cked too.. sometimes when the tank is close to low it will rise all the way to the top  I suppose I could put some after market guages in but I dont know the first thing about it.

GhettoPop 04-03-2003 12:07 AM

I bought my 90GT with 92k, now has 114k. My cousin was the ORIGINAL owner and the car is still stock to this day. Runs perfect. Always was maintained and sometimes the right foot got heavy. He changed the heater core once. I have given it a full tune up (plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel filter) and have just recently replaced a worn cooling system including the leaky radiator, cracking fan, worn fan clutch, thermostat, and water pump that just started leaking, that one was the last straw!

any other common problem areas?

all in all, solid reliability in my opinion!

ChunkFunky 04-03-2003 08:56 AM

I've got an 89 and I just rolled over 100K last month... I'm planning on putting new heads intake and cam into it this month... with everything everyone's saying I'm not too worried.. even if I only get another 20K out of it before I blow it. Im doing ok.

I did blow out my AOD at about 90K.. .though that seems pretty common

GodStang 04-03-2003 09:49 AM

I have a 1994 and should be turning the 150,000 with in a month. No Nothing but mods and the head gasket was changed.

Philossifer 04-03-2003 09:50 AM

My 89' has about 130,00 miles on the odometer but the factory engine blew at about 90,000. Too many shots of Nitrous I guess! The new engine is a factory GT-40 engine (B-303 cam) but I used the stock intake. The B-303 cam gives a nice lopey idle and plenty of midrange power.... Needless to say, the Nitrous bottle is gone!

Other than the new engine, a set of full length Heddman Headers, Underdrive pullys and 373:1 gears W/Auburn differential, it's pretty much bone stock.

No other major problems except for ripping apart the torque boxes. Welded in a few steel plates and it's good as new (maybe better!)
Phil

Sicy Stang 04-03-2003 11:46 AM

The ponies are some strong little cars!! Anyone have any advice for me about the guages? You probly all have after market guages and pay no attention to the stock guages eh? ;)

http://www.gamers-forums.com/smilies.../heartpump.gif Johnny Bravo http://www.gamers-forums.com/smilies.../heartpump.gif

Hoo hah!

erikd93lx 04-03-2003 11:58 AM

My advice would be to get some aftermarket guages, they are much easier to put on than to replace than the factory ones. I still use my factory guages but only because I can't afford autometer!

GhettoPop 04-03-2003 12:11 PM

for the fuel guage, u probally need to replace the fuel level sending unit in the tank itself as well

richd 04-03-2003 12:32 PM

The fuel guage is probably the sender in the tank. You could probably ignore it...by now you know what kind of mileage you get so just reset the trip odometer on every fillup and make sure you fill up again when you've driven 12 gallons * your mpg. So if you get 20 mpg then fill up every 12*20 = 240 miles.

I feel your worry about the oil guage though. Mine started wigging out last summer. I actually rode 4th gear down the highway because the pressure dropped to zero below 2k rpms! I soon realized if that was really happening my engine would have fried probably before I even noticed the guage. I bought a mechanical kit (Sunpro, water temp, oil pressure and ammeter I think, $30 or so) but haven't yet installed it. The tubing is coiled up in a tight ring and I wind up breaking it if I unroll it.

Back to your original question...a little complicated. The car registered about 79k 1.5 years ago when I got it. BUT...the speedometer was broken. Drive gear in tranny came loose. I drove probably 15k-20k until I rebuilt the trans last August. I'm now at 91k but there is an error of 9% because the new gear combo doesn't match my tires (another story), so about 13k miles since then. I'll estimate 18k for the pre trans rebuild.

79k + 18k + 13k = 110k. Plus I don't know how long the previous owner drove with the speedo broken. So it's probably a few grand above that.

Sicy Stang 04-03-2003 01:13 PM

Thanks for the advice peeps.

I will probly ignore the fuel guage.. since I do know how many miles I can go on a full tank. (Only about 180! ) and I never let it get close to empty. I guess I should get an oil pressure guage. I wish I had some guys like you around me though to help me install stuff like this. :(

I'm glad my engine hasnt blown up yet! Scary to think some of yours have blown up after only 60 - 90k. But then again.. I am vewwwy nice to my baby..

tmoss 04-03-2003 01:19 PM

185,xxx on my 88 GT vert 5spd. Runs like a top and uses less than a quart in 3,000 miles. Just did rebuild the T5 and trac-loc last winter.

ChunkFunky 04-03-2003 06:30 PM

aftermarket gauges are easy to install.. just need to find a key on power source if you go electric... witch are probabaly the simplest to install... where do you live anyway?

91GTturbo 04-03-2003 07:24 PM

Man, you guys and gals are driving your cars too much, or wait, maybe I'm just not driving mine enough. Only 42K original miles here.

Key on power source?

I live in California.. bay area.

Comatose 04-03-2003 09:52 PM

Key on power source: a source of power that only delivers juice when the key is in the 'on' position.

My 86' GT had 128,995 when I bought it Oct. 01', it now has 155,157. The car looks and runs great, although the rear main seal has developed a small leak. Nothing too serious, it uses a quart every 1k miles, which is a lot more than I'd like it to.

A friend of mine has an 86' interceptor that has 220k on everything, and it's still running strong. I won't be surprised to see it get close to 300k.

Thanks. I feel so ..... mustang unknowledgable around you guys... lol.

ChunkFunky 04-04-2003 07:14 AM

I'm moving to california this summer... but irvine... so that's a bit of a drive.. I'll look you up if I ever go to SF for the weekend...

basicaly electric gauges are easiest to install.. you just need to run a lead to the sender (the part in the engine that sends the signal to the gauge) from teh gauge and then you usualy need to run a lead to a power source. I said Key ON power source so that the gauges arent on ALL the time, not that they drain alot of power or anything but it's just a nice clean install. You'd probably need to find a power source for the lights too. You'd need to tap into the dash lights so that the gauges light up when you put the headlights on... It all sounds like alot, it's really not.. though if you've never doen it, I can imagine it's tough when you dont know what you're looking at.

If you wanna get into this job, you'll need a test light for sure.. they are cheap...you can get them at any auto parts store... it looks like an ice pick with a wire stickin out the bottom. This will help you identify where that's power.

I can get into it further if you want.

205,000 miles on the stock short block, except for cam change. i did change the heads, intake, and so on for performance reasons. but if you take care of it, it will last a long time. the idea of rebuilding engines every 100,000 miles is outdated, if you take care of the car

VeNuM 04-04-2003 09:56 AM

Bought mine in June '02 with the odometer at 74k, now I'm at just 81k. I try to keep the miles down but this is my only car. ~Brian

Stang_ROTY 04-04-2003 09:57 AM

I got about 500 miles on my engine. The car has got 68K on her. MY first 5.0 had 140K and she's still around town somewhere, but some idiot dipped her rear end into a tree.

drudis 04-04-2003 10:42 AM

My 1989 has 33K miles, mostly driven on Sundays... :)
http://www.dariusrudis.com/mustang/svtoa/SVTOA_035.jpg

lx5091 04-04-2003 11:14 AM

I bought mine with 87K now I have 106K, that was pretty much in one year! From Oct. 01 to Oct. 02 it saw 18K+, then since this last October it's only seen about 300 miles! I'd like to keep it that way!

Sicy Stang 04-04-2003 11:48 AM

Thanks ChunkFunky :) You'll be proud to know that I DO know what a test light is. yay me. :D

Well I dont plan on rebuilding anything unless something breaks/dies/etc. .. hehe. Judging from all these responses I feel very confident that my car will last to 200k on the way I have kept it up. Even though its a daily driver, I dont usually drive very far.

Drudis................................. niceeeeeeeeeeee http://images.bravenet.com/brpics/smilie/drool.gif

ChunkFunky 04-04-2003 01:36 PM

It's funny, I just now, realised you're a girl... not that it matters much.... in anycase... it's a nice looking car.... my car's a convertible, but after it hits the body shop next month it shoudl look very much that like, black with the saleen spoiler... anyway.. if there's anything you need to know, I, as well as just about everyone on this board are here to help. Good luck

Um woah.. are you the original owner of them?

Do they just sit in the garage or what http://smilies.jeeptalk.org/otn/other/scream.gif

Tony Frank 04-04-2003 07:29 PM

well the 82 was given to my dad back in 82 directly from ford, he invented a machine that would clean off access plastic from the blow mold machines. that car went through one winter and then was a weekend car. we got rid of the 302 and put in a 400hp 351 crate engine.

my 85 was owned by my dads friend, my dad ordered the car for him and he just never drove it. once or twice ever couple months. then i bought it off him and i only drive it on sunny days. its never seen rain or snow.

Sicy Stang 04-04-2003 07:43 PM

Wow.. that is really cool .. *wants to be friends with your dad* http://mindscraps.com/s/contrib/sarge/Blurp_anim.gif

You could probably get a lot of money for those cars.

Tony Frank 04-04-2003 08:02 PM

well. ive been offered 10,500 for mine, i dont want to get rid of it though. my dads drag car is appraised at 13,000. i have to up the appraisial on mine though. its only appraised at 9000

how is this car all original miles?

Tony Frank 04-05-2003 04:16 PM

because the odometer hasnt rolled over. if we are getting technical then the body has 30,000 motor has about 2,500 miles the C4 trans has 2,100 and 9 inch rear end has about 800 miles....

happy?
:D

abesmith69 04-05-2003 07:04 PM

1990 Convertible I bought it in 1999 with 78,000 miles on it and it has 91,000 on it now, I have rebuilt the engine and transmission they have about 300 miles on them currently.

What kinds of things start going wrong on a pretty much stock 88 with 134k?

Should I think about replacing anything before it breaks? lol.

- O2 sensors if they have never been replaced
- Ignition switch if it has not been replaced by Ford recall
campaign
- Catalytic converter section if it has not been replaced by Ford
recall campaign
- Get a spare TFI module from Ford and the tool for replacing it
(7/32" thin wall) and carry them in your trunk.

GhettoPop 04-07-2003 08:12 AM

are those items still covered under recall?

Do you know if Ford provides these items for free.. since they've been recalled?

I dont have any cats ... so I dont need to replace them.. :D

tmoss 04-07-2003 03:57 PM

when I got my 88 GT vert 5spd about three years ago with 171,000 on the clock, they checked and the ignition switch and the catalytic converter campaigns had not been done on my car, so I got both for free. I gave them my Flowmaster catbacks too and they installed them for $50.

scott93gt 04-07-2003 04:07 PM

Mine just turned 62,000 miles last week. This will be the 5th summer I have owned the car, and it had 40,000 miles on it when I purchased it.

MidNiteBlu 5.0 04-07-2003 04:15 PM

105,000 miles and it leaks oil like a mofo through 3 cylinder rings and the rear main seal :(

Of course i now realized that my engine had been driven very hard by the previous owner. he took great care of the interior and exterior except for one spot where someone backed into it but beat the hell out of the engine :(

Oh well, 331 time after the summer :D

Oh BTW lots of new faces here. Welcome people, I havent been here for a little while hehe.

Later,
Nick

Sicy Stang 04-07-2003 05:22 PM

My car seeps oil from the pan.. I'm guessing. The gasket is bad?

Wow Scott.. you dont drive yours very much :)

I watched mine turn to 134k the other day... each time it turns its like a knife turning into my heart.

lol ok that was melodramatic

jj_jonathon 04-07-2003 07:03 PM

i have over 19k on my 2002 GT....i put miles on that thing fast...i just cant stop driving it :) our 1990 GT which we bought off the ford lot in 89 has almost 300k KILOMETERS on it...its over 180-190k miles now or something....some oil leaks but aside form that, pretty decent running car...
