Since this has turned into a technical pissing contest, go ahead an mislabel that as a "pancake" engine. I'd like to see you call it that at a PCA meet. You'd get laughed at.

For those who like to learn, the "pancake motor" was a special designation given to the air cooled flat four used in the early Type III VW's. These were the notchback, fastback, and squareback cars. That variation of the bug motor had an early Bosch fuel injection and measured 15" from top to bottom. It was flat on the top and bottom, and could easily be dropped out the bottom of a type III to work on.

Not all boxer motors are pancakes, if you don't believe me, ask the next guy you see driving a mid 80's Testarossa.;)

I love learning this stuff :) N1 Deuce...

I hate to break it to you all but where did cbring say anything really bad? i mean I admit he made a couple statements that may not have been completely true in his first posts but i have not recalled him spewing BS or flaming up the whole board.

And dont call a GTI rice. i am not gonna point fingers but a few of you really have problems if your gonna call any import that comes here a rice burner. there are imports and GTi's in particular that could hang with any almost any car here. Alot of you guys seem to be turning into total Mustang/domestic Nazis.

makes you wonder why a few of the people that made this board great in the past are leaving huh?

I think if you're going to modify a V6 mustang, get the '99+ mustang with the 190hp engine, as opposed to the previous 145 or whatever HP engine. The 190hp 3.8L has better heads and intake, and with a supercharger, cam, porting, gears and exhaust would absolutely rip. That's about all i'd modify. I'd use one of the older ones maybe as a fun daily driver with stiffer suspension (at least upgrade to GT suspension) and not spend much money on boosting power (unless i changed to the '99+ or whatever year 190 hp engine stuff).

the V6 mustangs have potential, but i'd much rather start off with a 5.0L or 4.6L V8 because all the suspension and drivetrain is beefed up already.

The only v-6's I'd bother with would be a Grand National and maybe a volkwagon (scirroco/GTI). I'm not gonna lie, I wouldn't mind having a Grand National, but for the price I'd pay for a nice one, I'd rather build a BAYAD early 90's black (or dark metalic grey) notchback (331 stroker/TKO/3.90's/ now I'm pissed/ welp see ya).........

I mod anything I have, to an extent. :)

Modified V-6

I have a '98 3.8L V-6 and have modified w/K&N Filter, Pro-kit Eibach Springs and Strut Tower Bar. Next will be cool-air intake and Superchip/Diablo (havn't decided yet based on forum messages. I'll wait 'til more guys drop the Diablo in and see). I have to be honest and say that it all depends on what your goal is.

I am 32 and have a young son. The gas mileage on a well tuned 3.8L is much better than the 4.6L. With the whole Iraq issue, I'd compromise HP right now in lieu of potential gas prices. For young men, Insurance is a big factor too.

Don't let all these guys interested in increasing their ET at the tracks let you fold on the V-6. Modify him a bit and you'll blow the GT boys out the window and they'll look at you like...Huh?...

Do your research, keep function before form and only buy the best.

Have Fun! Jane of all Trades.

No disrepect Gentlemen

Gentlemen,

I did not intend to offend anyone with my statements. I WISH I could have 1/2 of what some of you fella's have, but, I can't. So I do with what I have and try to be happy with that. I just felt that a couple of the absolute don't bother comments may have driven Dan-man away from a nice solid vehicle.

We just can't all have what some of you "Big Guys" have. Be nice to us Newbie Wanna-bes "k"...Some of us are looking for true knowledge here... Wink, Smile ... We're all family here right!

Jane

and I'd like to recant the "ET time" statement. You are all nice people and at the moment, ya' made me a little grumpy (and a tad deficient having a little 'ol V-6). ;)

So sorry guys...

Rev 10-21-2002 08:18 PM

Don't feel deficient

Please don't feel deficient Jane or grumpy either for heaven sakes. We welcome anyone in here no matter what they might drive. And BTW, most of us "big guys" are just ordinary car enthuseists that love our cars and want to talk with others about them. Welcome Jane to MW.

Thanks!

Thanks Rev!

Nice to be able to talk to you guys. I usually just like watching, ;) but sometimes you just have to jump in there and grab the bull by the horns. :) Thanks again for the warm welcome and it's nice to be here. Expect me to pop in and peek around now and then. You guys have some awesome information and I have been able to make some pretty nice little changes to my "boy" and I'm real happy with him so far. It's always nice to keep us ladies happy!
