How many of you guys would mod a v-6?
I'm wanting to know. I'm thinking about buying a v-6 stang and wanting to know who has one and if you've modded it, what kind of mods have been done to it.
Any feedback or suggestions would be helpful. Daniel. |
Not worth the effort
Not worth the effort IMHO. If it wasn't given to you for free, just get a V-8 to begin with. Even if it was given to you, sell it and buy a V-8.
Rev |
Can't do that. I'm needing something new to drive. I was thinking of doing some small modifications to increase power. But then again, I may not modify it. I'm just thinking and running over my options at this point.
Daniel. |
$? V-8 vs V-6?
Couldn't be much could it?
Rev |
i'd mod a v6 if it were a 300zx TT.......
i'd leave a v6 mustang bone stock, except maybe a head unit/10" inch sub/small amp |
Speaker box?
I'll bet you're an expert there? Engines, I wonder. And after I defended you youger ones.
Rev |
actually, i do know my way around a car stereo.......
when i'm parked on I-40 every evening at 6:10 pm, a stereo offers a lot more entertainment than headwork or a gear swap.....same thing during my 23 minute, 2 mile commute from apartment to downtown office why do you guys keep saying younger ones? i am certain that i am younger than many, but i am a college graduate, not some kid who got his license thursday |
when some people on this site want to buy cars and they want a daily driver, why do they pick a V6 Stang? does it get good gas mileage? does it do well in the snow?(Dan i know you dont have to worry about that!) I would buy myself a little Nissan like a Sentra. Very good gas mileage, look nice, handle decent, low emissions, safe, affordable and they last a long time. Dont get me wrong, their isnt really anything wrong with owning a V6 Stang, but i would assume for a big car with a small motor like that, it must not get too great of gas mileage. But if you want RWD and a Stang and cant afford the V8's, then more power to ya'.(no pun intended) I just get a little confused about that and i see alot of posts here with the same situation.
Would i buy a V6 Stang? yes if i didnt care about gas mileage, but if i did, i wouldnt buy the Stang. just my opinion i guess. |
Car stereos?
In that area, you've got me beat hands down, Ill be glad to take advice where ever I can get it on car stereos.
As to fast cars, you would be wise to listen a little bit. Maybe even on things in general. I like young guys and welcome them into the fold, but pay a little attention and learn some. Rev |
I say get a V6 Stang, and mod it. It'll give the ricers, and Camaros a little surprise.:D

My sister's got a '98 model with a v-6. It's runs pretty good for a v-6 automatic.
The one I'm interested in is a v-6 5 spd. I think that the v-6's have potential if people would just take the time to mod one. Daniel. |

BS man, I've got mine, I'm young. I've been under the hood of American cars (Ford in particular) for a whole lot of years and I still learn tons around here. Just because you are educated doesn't make you smart. |
my point (which has nothing to do with not wanting to learn):
i support myself, i wear a shirt & tie to my office each day, i'm also working to break into local politics.........therefore, i am not the backwards hat wearing, baggy jeans wearing, limp biskiting listening homeboy that seems to be what is discussed when discussing the "younger ones" |
jeez, so what your still 'young', thats all they really mean, they just trying to push buttons to get people going. just cause your going into local politics doesn't make you instantly mature. i'm both a draftsman and a engineer (its doesn't make me any less young) and it doesn't bother me when some one calls me a 'younger one'. just be yourself and don't let others bother you.
-murray -oh yeah i wear a shirt and tie too, and also support myself (since i was 18) i also paid my own way through college too with no debt either. so don't get on too big of a high horse. |
Mature person
A mature person doesn't have to press the point, He just shows it from what he knows. I think you ca see my point.

about the topic:
I honestly would never buy a V6 sports car unless it was a porsche (and I saw an 02 911 on the highway today, just about drooled all over my interior :D:D)...and one of those things needs nothing done to it :)...so I would never get the chance to mod a V6.... |
Quote:
porsche 911 is classified an "horizontally opposed 6" (i think that is the correct phrase) or "boxer 6" inline 6: supra tt bmw v6: 3000gt vr4 300zx tt buick grand national vr6 volkswagen etc, |
...obviously i dont know much about engines...i think 6 spark plags means 6 cylinders, whihc means V6, so thank you for saying that, I do like learning when I'm wrong by a technicality...
but i cant help feel like you just grabbed my balls and asked me to cough...lol |
didn't mean to be blunt...........just saw an opportunity to share some "other car" knowlegde............maybe save someone some real life embarrassment in the future.....cause lord knows i've said some wrong things about cars to knowledgeable folk and gotten laughed at
|
well i dont really consider myself to be all that knowledgable when it comes to cars..which is why its great to part of this site, because when i do have an in depth quetsion these guys are always around to answer me :) ....course having a new car gives me no hands-on opportunites, I have worked a little with a 90GT, but like I said, still dont know a whole lot...reading some of the posts help too...which is why i appreciate people correcting me, and others...

A V-6 Mustang?
I might put some bolt-ons on it but nothing major.... Maybe some eibach springs to lower the stance a bit.... I would basically use it for what it was designed to be, sporty looking transportation.... and since it was brought up.... and that it happens to be somewhat of a tiresome subject that I hear in real life sometimes... College: To me it means you were able to deal with homework, term papers, tests and rampant liberalism for 4+ years... not much else. Looking back, I could have easily gone to college (3.85 GPA, great SAT scores). I skipped class half my senior year in high school and never studied. Hell, I had some top schools including the Citadel knocking down my door. I went to community college for one semester and found it to ba the same old crap that I had been doing for 12 years already. I was bored to death and just stopped being interested.... I needed to go out and do something that MEANT something, that was CHALLENGING, something that would change me from being just intelligent to being experienced. The Navy was the absolute best 4 years of my life, and some of the hardest.... I went from being a spoiled kid who had everything handed to me to someone that put his ***** out on the line every day in the most dangerous workplace on Earth. (A carrier flight deck) What I saw and experienced there were more than any book or tenured professor could ever give me: experience, wisdom, and a grasp for what REALLY is important. Not what you drive, how much you make, or what certification you might have.... but what you are capable of when crap hits the fan. Whether in a tense meeting in a board room or working feet from an engine that could not only blow you off the ship, but roast you before you hit the water..... How about eating MREs for two weeks while living out of tents in the 100 degree Mosquito-ridden heat of Puerto Rico's interior? Or working 20 hours straight to make sure an air strike is on time and on-target? Once you have dealt with true challenges, this daily suit and tie crap is cake.... When some people try to come up and impress me by sticking a college degree in my face, I gotta wonder... Who are they trying to impress more? Is it me or themselves? (Cbring, this is nothing against you, but the subject was brought up and I wanted to comment on it.) |
Well, I was thinking about some other things as well. If I got this car, I might wait until ater college and put a 5.0 or a 5.8 in it. That's probably my best solution.
Daniel. |

1) the person that the comment was directed to seemed to have no problem with it
2) show me somewhere that classifies a 911 as a V6. there are many an enthusiast out there that is gonna laugh at you if you call it a V6. but hey, if an almighty mustang driver says it is a V6, then a V6 it is |
Maybe I can give you a new perspective.
Your modding and acceptance will vary depending on your attitude. I have a V6 (Firebird), I don't really care all that much for performance. I am an appearance only guy. Of course I maintain my V6, but I don't really care for performance....all of my performance mods include : A muffler (no 's :() - Flowmaster 80 Synthetic Oil if you count it for the 2 hp gain I got. Appearance wise, I have done much more. The only performance mod I plan to get is a reworked exhaust, but more for the sound and attention it brings, not for the power gain. |

if you want to flame me, thats fine............but if you do, flame me with factual stuff instead of the "180 degree V" BS that someone might believe..........
The boxer engine, also called a "flat engine" or "pancake engine," is an engine whose cylinders are laid down on their sides. So instead of pumping up and down, as on an "in line" engine, or diagonally, as on a "V" engine, the pistons are "horizontally opposed," or on opposite sides of the crankshaft, pumping toward one another. http://members.rennlist.com/jackolsen/964.jpg so lets see, it doesn't function like a "V" and doesn't look like a "V"............hmmm |

I never said that I would call it a V. I just made the point that a 180degree V is mathematically as much of an interior angle than the standard 60 or 90(even the VR6's 15). That was my only point, to answer your glib with some of my own. I might also suggest that you tone the attitude down a little bit. It may go over real nice at the flame fest you are used to, but we try and maintain a level of civility here. Before you judge my autotive knowledge, yes I have owned a vehilce both from Stuttgart and Wolfsburg, so I know a thing or two about the German car scene. Heck, the only people I can't hold an intelligent conversation with at the LA internation auto show are the guys in the DC sports booth who want to talk about neon an NAWSSS. (BTW your might gti is slower than my car;) ) |

For those who like to learn, the "pancake motor" was a special designation given to the air cooled flat four used in the early Type III VW's. These were the notchback, fastback, and squareback cars. That variation of the bug motor had an early Bosch fuel injection and measured 15" from top to bottom. It was flat on the top and bottom, and could easily be dropped out the bottom of a type III to work on. Not all boxer motors are pancakes, if you don't believe me, ask the next guy you see driving a mid 80's Testarossa.;) |
I love learning this stuff :) N1 Deuce...
|
you are right, i got that from a general boxer engine site......i couldn't find much that talked about 6 cylinders
what do you expect from a guy that drives a "Nazi car"??? |
damn mustang know-it-all! :D
...all in good fun right? |

I hate to break it to you all but where did cbring say anything really bad? i mean I admit he made a couple statements that may not have been completely true in his first posts but i have not recalled him spewing BS or flaming up the whole board.
And dont call a GTI rice. i am not gonna point fingers but a few of you really have problems if your gonna call any import that comes here a rice burner. there are imports and GTi's in particular that could hang with any almost any car here. Alot of you guys seem to be turning into total Mustang/domestic Nazis. makes you wonder why a few of the people that made this board great in the past are leaving huh? |
I think if you're going to modify a V6 mustang, get the '99+ mustang with the 190hp engine, as opposed to the previous 145 or whatever HP engine. The 190hp 3.8L has better heads and intake, and with a supercharger, cam, porting, gears and exhaust would absolutely rip. That's about all i'd modify. I'd use one of the older ones maybe as a fun daily driver with stiffer suspension (at least upgrade to GT suspension) and not spend much money on boosting power (unless i changed to the '99+ or whatever year 190 hp engine stuff).
the V6 mustangs have potential, but i'd much rather start off with a 5.0L or 4.6L V8 because all the suspension and drivetrain is beefed up already. |
The only v-6's I'd bother with would be a Grand National and maybe a volkwagon (scirroco/GTI). I'm not gonna lie, I wouldn't mind having a Grand National, but for the price I'd pay for a nice one, I'd rather build a BAYAD early 90's black (or dark metalic grey) notchback (331 stroker/TKO/3.90's/ now I'm pissed/ welp see ya).........
|
I mod anything I have, to an extent. :)
