For those who like to learn, the "pancake motor" was a special designation given to the air cooled flat four used in the early Type III VW's. These were the notchback, fastback, and squareback cars. That variation of the bug motor had an early Bosch fuel injection and measured 15" from top to bottom. It was flat on the top and bottom, and could easily be dropped out the bottom of a type III to work on. Not all boxer motors are pancakes, if you don't believe me, ask the next guy you see driving a mid 80's Testarossa. ![]()
