1- depends..
2- for me yes...
3- Ive had V-8's... depends on how much you 'punch it'
4- General maintenance good... overall yes...
5- they dont go in the snow... average - in the rain.. just dont step on it when wet..

a 2000 LX leads me to believe that you want a V-6.. change #3 to average on gas...

Have always been good cars to me. You just have to do your regular maintance. There are people on this site that are going to tell you fords are crap. My dad had a 2000 V6 mustang and got 27MPG if i remeber right. Good commuter car.

Smile Re: I want to buy a mustang

I bought a 1990 Mustang 5.0 new - drove it for 15 years and 125,000 miles with little trouble. It was fun, fast and reliable. The newer 4.6L V-8 Mustangs are an improvement in some ways (safer: handle and stop better) but not as fast and are a bit 'over-refined' for my taste. Reliability is so-so, no worse than most other domestic makes. No rear-wheel-drive car is going to be very good in snow and/or rain but the right kind of tires can overcome that drawback. The V-6 is acceptable but if you want the full 'Mustang experience' get the V-8 model. V-8 gas milege is never very high so if gas costs are a real concern to you, buy a Honda or Toyota hybrid, instead. If you want power, looks and fun, buy the Mustang V-8 coupe....and enjoy it.

Cool Re: I want to buy a mustang

Agreed buying a V8 and worrying about gas is like ... "marrying a big girl and worrying about the gorcery bill".

I've had good reliability with my mustangs.

I thought the newer 4.6L Stangs got pretty good mileage with the AOD and 5 speed OD (20 or so highway). I don't think they are tremendously fast, but they're not bad really. I guess I'm just used to my 12 mpg with $3.00/gal gas.

I had a 2001 GT 5 SPD and was getting about 23 mpg city/highway mix. It was faster than my 90 GT (also a 5 spd) in the 1/4 because of the top end, but, the 90 had more go off the line. I have driven the v6's and I cant stand them. To me, the suspension in the v6 felt sloppy as hell.

To me a V-6 Stang or Camaro is just buying the body shell with nothing else, really. Engine, drive train, suspension, interior are all cheap as possible and it shows. I guess if a person doesn't really care about performance it might be OK, but then why buy an emasculated performance car at all?

The car he has his eye on is a 1990 LX coupe though, so it should have decent performance and can be easily upgraded for more performance without too much $$$ or effort.

I agree completely. The v6 rental I drove for a couple of months was terrible. The interior was really cheap feeling, the seats were terrible, the steering was sloppy, the suspension sucked, and for a 6 cyl, the gas mileage was horrible.

Actually Rev, he stated in his original post that he was looking for a 2000.

Yup, my bad. He did say 2000 LX coupe. I haven't really driven one, but they seem like a decent car from what I've heard. Don't they have about 260 hp at about 3300 lbs?

A Vortex supercharger would really wake it up I'll bet. I have a friend that went from mid 15's to low 13's in a '96 vert with just the addition of a Vortex.

The GT's had 260 hp, I have no idea what the v6 had. I actually miss my 01, alot.

The V-6s were a little lighter than the GT's and had 190 or 195hp. With a 5spd and good driver, they're a low 15sec car from the factory. I think MM&FF got one into the 14s with free mods like icing the intake, pulling the spare/jack out and maybe a couple other minor tweaks. They said it was easier to get their 99 V6 into the 14s than their SN95 4.6 GT.

As far as the interior, a lot probably has to do with the interior package chosen. I've been in a V6 Mustang and it felt every bit as nice as my 02 GT

So the 2000 LX is a six? I guess I'm thinking back in the Fox body days when the LX had the same engine as the GT. If that 2000 LX is a six, then it would come down a fair bit in my value analysis. If one really wants an economy car, one could do better with a Honda.

I do believe that from 94 and up, LX referred to the 6 cyl.

i think i remember reading mm&ff and they were talking about stroking the 3.8 out to a 4.2, but thats a fair amount of coin to dump into v-6 though.
