If You Love Racing...

We could use your help. As most of you know, the powers that be are trying to bulldoze our racetrack, Ventura Raceway. Racetracks all over the country are disappearing at an alarming rate, and now ours is on the butchers block. There is now a website that is devoted to saving Ventura Raceway, and if you'd like to help, you can. I'm not asking for any money (the site does, but don't worry about it) because there are other ways you can help. Among them is the ability to download a copy of our petition, which you and your friends and/or co-workers could sign. It doesn't matter if you are a California resident or not, as we have racers and fans from all over the country that come to race at our track, and their (your) feelings count too!!!

Check out the website, and see what it says under Get Involved Now, and if you feel so inclined, lend us a hand. I assure you the entire racing community thanks you!!!

Thanks for your time!

Take care,
~Chris

FYI: Newspaper Coverage

If you're interested in reading more about the issue at hand, here are some of the articles and letters from the local newspaper recently. My personal favorite is the second letter you will find at the third link:

Seaside Park races could be on their last lap

Saturday Night in Ventura: Raceway

Letters to the Editor: Ventura Raceway

Weekend trip to Ventura solely because of raceway

Thanks again for your interest!

Take care,
~Chris

I will leave you with this thought. Yes, the raceway may be noisy at times, but along with that noise comes family outings, healthy competition, teamwork, fairness, integrity, lessons in honorable conduct, and many other positive influences beneficial to a society. To me, I cannot understand how one can outweigh the other. It will be a loss to the community to discontinue it and, I suspect that if we were able to go back over the years, you would find hundreds or even thousands of people who think and feel just as I do.

Chris,

I read some on whats goin on here and I hate seeing this kind of stuff. It seems like any more these days there's constantly someone who tries to take away what we choose to do for fun and entertainment.

I may be a bit too far away to help petition wise, but I did donate 50 bucks via thier website,I feel your pain as the ONLY track we have here in Jacksonville is starting to feel the pressure of noise regulations, they started by killing our midnite drags(only street legal cars) with quiet pipes were allowed, this track has been there for over 30 years and NOW the developers built a golf course close by,which brings high dollar homes, you get the rest. After all these years now they want this property,so the city is pressuring them to move,we organized and beat the Bastards by voting out the people involved (votes do matter). Keep at it and beat them at the polls, then you will get thier attention. I hope the small amount I sent helps.

Jack-
I'm sure your donation will help alot! Thank you very much!

Our problem is actually a little different than the usual, but it's still all about money. The true push to pave over the track is being made by a huge corporation that owns half of the radio stations in the country. They seem to think that an amphitheater would be better that a race track. They have been after this for years, but the fair board always renewed the contract for the track every year. Well, this year, the "company" that wants the land donated large sums of money to our Governor's re-election campaign, and oddly enough, over the past several months, the Governor himself has appointed 6 new members to the 9 member fair board, something he has never done before. Now, for the first time, they are saying that they also don't think the track is a good idea anymore.

Well see what happens. We are really trying to get as many petitions signed as possible, and we don't care where they come from. The point is to show that there ia a large interest in motorsports, which the new board members seem to think is trivial.

In any case, thank you very much for your help, and good luck with efforts in your area!

Take care,
~Chris

A company that owns close to half of the radio stations nationwide has wanted to build an outdoor amphitheater there for a few years now. Problem is, the ocean breeze is cold, and even on the hottest day of the year, you still need a jacket when the sun goes down. Between September and May, it would be too cold for them to have any nighttime shows. Then there's the noise issue. If they think the cars are loud, wait until they have bands playing. There won't be much of a family atmosphere anymore, either, since there really aren't very many bands that entire families enjoy seeing together. The traffic associated with the shows they do have will cripple the downtown, too. And, the stables at the fairgrounds, which are used all year round for horse shows and 4H events, would be demolished too. No more horse shows, no more horsepower shows.

This "company" has been trying to convince the fair board to deny the renewal of the tracks contract for years, to no avail, so this year they got smart. They made large donations to Governor Dickhead Davis' re-election campaign last spring, and wouldn't you know it, guess who took it upon himself to personally appoint, for his first time ever, 6 new members to the 9 member fair board? That's right, Davis.

More info than you wanted, I'm sure.

:)

Take care,
ÅChris

***UPDATE***

Hey everyone,

I want to thank those of you that have helped so far, but I also need to ask those of you that haven't to consider it. There is still time to download a petition, get it signed, and send it back. The next meeting, when the fairboard is supposed to cast their vote, is Tuesday, November 26. We still need as many signatures as we can get, ESPECIALLY from out of state, so if you want to help, you still can.

Download a petition HERE!

Thanks again!

Take care,
~Chris

What if you already signed one?

Can I send in more than one petition? If so, I think I'll send in about 100, lol. Either way Chris, let me know what happens on the 26th, I want to go up there again next season. Later, Keith

PKRWUD 11-18-2002 09:55 PM

Hell yeah, send in as many as you can get signed!

Thanks!

Take care,
~Chris
