me hate my computer
the thing is driving up the wall. i downloaded internet explorer 5.something for windows 95 (it said it was compatible) and now it freezes everytime i start it when the background pic loads (no icons appear) ......do anybody know what to do? (other than tell me to get a new comp. )
any help is great. -murray |
defrag your comp. and if that dont work youre gunna have to reboot it
|
Save everything you actually want, and reformat. You may have screwed up your registry when you installed IE5. One win95 you need to run c:\regback before you install a program that modifies your OS, as IE does.
Sorry dude. |
IMO you shouldnt be running anything lower than win98 these days...if you reformat you might as well try winME...depending on your processor speed, maybe go with XP...compatibility is much higher...but itll lag the hell out of a slower processor...
|
You probably have to upgrade to 98 or 2000. IE might not be compatible with 95. DO NOT BUY WINDOWS ME it is the biggest pos OS i have seen in a long time. (we have it) Soon i will be on my own custom built comp with XP :D

and ME was more stable on my old machine than 98...i think every computer is different... |
You probably will have to format, that's usually the easiest way to solve a problem with windows. And why not upgrade to win98 while you're at it, so long as you're comp can handle it. If you have 95 right now WinXP is probably going to be too much for your computer. WinME is crap, I haven't talked to any system builders or gamers that prefered it over 98 or 2000.

ME
Windows ME is the most stable OS that I have ever used. For a home PC, I don't think that you can beat the stability and ease of use. I definitely would not tell someone to not buy it without even knowing what they are using the computer for. I have used 95, 98, 2000, NT and they all cause problems eventually. Some are better than others.

I love this thread.
:) Take care, ~Chris |
Windows Me is fine for just normal computer stuff (word processing etc) But if you try to do any kind of multimedia (videos, music etc) and especially games it gets messed up really easy. Sucks at multi tasking too.
And JJ im not paying anything for XP...I have connections :D :D I bet you do love this thread Mac boy! :p ;) Later, Nick |
lol, my mistake :) ...but I used to play Quake II on ME..every Version of Windows seems to go for a sh!te after a while of being on your machine...even XP acted up on me a few months ago....i kicked my computer's @$$ and reformatted everything except my d: drive....
chris...MACs have an ugly interface...lol :D....but it is oh so very true that their stability is far greater than that of the PC....also a helluva lot nicer to use for multimedia and 3d animation...wait...i thought i was burning MACs....doh...lol...i still hate that one button mouse!! :p |

XP is the way to go (I've had them all except 2000), but if you got it from a "friend" like me, don't run any updates!! I finally had to reboot my computer the other day after running nonstop for 3 months and 17 days! :) |
Do NOT load ME. Nasty nasty OS. When I worked for Gateway we had more problems out of ME than all other OS's combined. Go with win 98 or 98 SE. I prefer 98 SE and that's what I always use.

There is a way to register XP as a second user too. M.E. was flat-out JUNK !!! |

Guys, I'm sorry you're have so much trouble, I just loved this thread because according to another self proclaimed know-it all, who doesn't, you are all lying. Windows is perfect and never has problems. LOL. My desktop tonight: |
Ok I've worked with every os out there really and pretty much had every os on my computer except 2000 but I used it at work and school.
First, how fast is your computer? If you can meet the requirements for XP I would say go for it. Also remember XP takes about 1GB to install so if you don't have a big hard drive I'd be cautious. If your running 95 right now I doubt your computer can handle XP. I would probably suggest Windows 98SE (Second Edition), but if your a hardcore gamer, then maybe go with ME. It's all personal opinion but I just suggest 98SE. PKRWUD We have a whole bunch of Macs at my new school. I can't wait to sit down and play around with them, I can go anytime, just have no clue how to use them. lol :D §am. |

I find it refreshing when a lifetime Windows user sees the Mac as fun, rather than an enemy, based on negative propaganda they've heard from their die-hard Windows buddies, most of whom have never even turned a Mac on. You won't be disappointed. Enjoy! Take care, ~Chris |
If you have a lot of stuff on the hard drive that you are having problems with, borrow a friends that has win 98 on it, and install it as the master, and yours as a slave, then you will boot up with his op system and be able to see everything on yours to save your stuff, then reformat your hard drive.

thanks for the info guys. the comp i have is a old one from 1997, but i might be getting a newer one soon. my comp has a 15gig hd and is no where near full. but i thinking of get my friend to hook my hd to his comp and erasing IE5 from hd and then checking over the hd and maybe putting 98 on my hd from his comp. but i will talk to you all later.

Whats funny Chris is I have a friend that was die hard Mac all the way through senior year of high school and now has given up on mac and gone PC. I dont remember exactly what happened but i can remember him being pretty pissed off at his Mac lol. Something about running a server I think but I am not sure.
Macs dont suck but i have just been around PC's all my life and never really had a problem with them :) Later, Nick |
Here we go again. I like the OSX interface. But please dont compare your 2002 version of MAC OS to Windows 1995.
How fast is your computer? Ditch windows 95, your in the stone age. Seeing has you have 95, your computer is probably deathly slow. Look for a new system atleast 1ghz or better. The slowest ones we sell are 1.7GHZ now and they start at $699.00. Skyler |
Windows 95??....shouldn't that be in a museum somewhere?
|
I just have one word to say *** AMIGA ***
I still miss it ...sniff sniff It had an OS very similar to MAC but it had co-processors for graphics ... it handled graphics faster at 7 MHz than this pc i'm on right now at 500 MHz. ... thats right i said 7 MHz that wasn't a typo lol Its still the backbone of a lot of digital special effects at the smaller cable tv stations. |
Chris, I don't hate macs but I do find windows to make just as much sense as mac os x. It may be because I've been using it for so long. You're example about the hard drive being called a hard drive makes some sense, but what happens when you have multiple hard drives. I have 8 partitions of 20 gigs a piece on my computer, would they all be called hard drive? And how do you get access to the partitions in whatever dos based equivalent macs have?(I still love using dos). I'm sure i've probably shown how little I know about macs in my questions, but that's alright. Maybe if they someday catch up in the mhz race I'll give them a serious look.

http://homepage.mac.com/pkrwud/.Pict...ee/desktop.jpg DOS. LOL. I will never forget how scared I was the night before I took my DOS 6.22 final exam in my PC repair and networking class! I couldn't sleep! 6 months later after passing my A+ certification exam, I walked by the "DOS tables" in the classroom, and just started laughing at the new students that were freaking out. I wasn't laughing at them, so to speak, but at how they were acting exactly as I had been, and I had come so far since then that DOS seemed like "Pong" probably does to someone with Playstation. Anyway, if it is a window into which you can type your code-specific commands that you enjoy, Mac has what's called "Terminal", which gives you root access into the Unix base of the OS. It doesn't do much for me, as I am much more into a GUI than typed commands, but I am told that Terminal is a true computer geeks best friend. Something about Unix being the "real schit" when it comes to programming and such. :) Take care, ~Chris |

mac's have a terminal in a unix based system. I'm probably familiar with it already then, as I would guess that the terminal window in linux is fairly similar. Maybe I'll have to look at one more in depth the next time I see one, last time I looked at one I saw it had a one button mouse and I ran the other way.
|
WOW....?????
I am so surprised to see everyone(almost) getting along about different OS's and computers. Damn this is nice. LxMustangRacer, Mac OSX's Terminal.app is very simular(sp?) to Linux. You would have no problem there at all. It's just the file structure is different. |

Thank you.

chris:
the majority of those preference options youre talking about work the exact same way with windows...and espeially if you get TweakXP you can play with even more stuff...:) MACs don't suck, neither do PCs....both are incredible little machines, but so is a toaster....circuitry is great :) |
