me hate my computer

the thing is driving up the wall. i downloaded internet explorer 5.something for windows 95 (it said it was compatible) and now it freezes everytime i start it when the background pic loads (no icons appear) ......do anybody know what to do? (other than tell me to get a new comp. )
any help is great.

Save everything you actually want, and reformat. You may have screwed up your registry when you installed IE5. One win95 you need to run c:\regback before you install a program that modifies your OS, as IE does.

IMO you shouldnt be running anything lower than win98 these days...if you reformat you might as well try winME...depending on your processor speed, maybe go with XP...compatibility is much higher...but itll lag the hell out of a slower processor...

You probably have to upgrade to 98 or 2000. IE might not be compatible with 95. DO NOT BUY WINDOWS ME it is the biggest pos OS i have seen in a long time. (we have it) Soon i will be on my own custom built comp with XP

....oh you must be one of those people who actually think they need to spend money on an operating system to have it on your computer...*grin*...ahh...poor poor soul ....

and ME was more stable on my old machine than 98...i think every computer is different...

You probably will have to format, that's usually the easiest way to solve a problem with windows. And why not upgrade to win98 while you're at it, so long as you're comp can handle it. If you have 95 right now WinXP is probably going to be too much for your computer. WinME is crap, I haven't talked to any system builders or gamers that prefered it over 98 or 2000.

Windows ME is the most stable OS that I have ever used. For a home PC, I don't think that you can beat the stability and ease of use. I definitely would not tell someone to not buy it without even knowing what they are using the computer for. I have used 95, 98, 2000, NT and they all cause problems eventually. Some are better than others.

Windows Me is fine for just normal computer stuff (word processing etc) But if you try to do any kind of multimedia (videos, music etc) and especially games it gets messed up really easy. Sucks at multi tasking too.

And JJ im not paying anything for XP...I have connections

lol, my mistake ...but I used to play Quake II on ME..every Version of Windows seems to go for a sh!te after a while of being on your machine...even XP acted up on me a few months ago....i kicked my computer's @$$ and reformatted everything except my d: drive....

chris...MACs have an ugly interface...lol ....but it is oh so very true that their stability is far greater than that of the PC....also a helluva lot nicer to use for multimedia and 3d animation...wait...i thought i was burning MACs....doh...lol...i still hate that one button mouse!!

Do NOT load ME. Nasty nasty OS. When I worked for Gateway we had more problems out of ME than all other OS's combined. Go with win 98 or 98 SE. I prefer 98 SE and that's what I always use.

I too have XP from a "friend" but I havent had any problems with running the updates, I just don't report any glitches to microsoft.
There is a way to register XP as a second user too.

Then why does Bill Gates try so damn hard to copy it? I think it's the most beautiful interface there is. OS X especially. I also hate the one button mouse. That's why I have a 3 button cordless trackball.

Ok I've worked with every os out there really and pretty much had every os on my computer except 2000 but I used it at work and school.

First, how fast is your computer? If you can meet the requirements for XP I would say go for it. Also remember XP takes about 1GB to install so if you don't have a big hard drive I'd be cautious. If your running 95 right now I doubt your computer can handle XP. I would probably suggest Windows 98SE (Second Edition), but if your a hardcore gamer, then maybe go with ME. It's all personal opinion but I just suggest 98SE.

The most common remark I hear from Windows users who sit down with a Mac for a few days is "That's how a computer should work." If you're a long time Windows user, it will seem strange. Everything is very common sense (the hard drive is called (ready for this?) the hard drive. No C drive, D drive, etc. You can, of course, rename everything so that it suits you, if you like. Everything has menus (with tons of options so that you can personalize it your way) on top of every window. They are always where you need them, including the desktop. Macs have never been case sensitive, or picky about extensions, but Windows finally caught on to the convenience that provides, so I'm sure you're used to it by now. There is a Systems Preferences window, which is similar to Control Panels, but every single app also has it's own preference panel under it's name when launched, so you never need to go looking for them. OS X also has a new feature called the Dock, which sits at the bottom (or either side, if you prefer) of your desktop, and holds app links to everything that's open, as well as anything you want to put there for easy access. In the desktop pic I attached in my second reply to this thread, you can see the dock at the bottom of the screen. An option in the Dock preferences that I like is to hide the Dock just below the screen, so that it's out of sight. Whenever you wish to access it, just move your pointer to the bottom of the screen, and it pops up for you. Every app also has a View menu (at the top of the screen) that gives you several more customizing options, including icon size, background color, etc. In that same pic I attached, you can see the graphic quality just in the icons, which I have intentionally set to 128 x 128 because I like the cool graphics big. You can even select your own images to be the background inside windows that you open, rather than being plain white. Best of all, you can't hurt a Mac. Anything you do can be undone, so don't be afraid to explore and try different things!

I find it refreshing when a lifetime Windows user sees the Mac as fun, rather than an enemy, based on negative propaganda they've heard from their die-hard Windows buddies, most of whom have never even turned a Mac on. You won't be disappointed.

If you have a lot of stuff on the hard drive that you are having problems with, borrow a friends that has win 98 on it, and install it as the master, and yours as a slave, then you will boot up with his op system and be able to see everything on yours to save your stuff, then reformat your hard drive.

thanks for the info guys. the comp i have is a old one from 1997, but i might be getting a newer one soon. my comp has a 15gig hd and is no where near full. but i thinking of get my friend to hook my hd to his comp and erasing IE5 from hd and then checking over the hd and maybe putting 98 on my hd from his comp. but i will talk to you all later.
