![]() if anyone can help i'd appreciate it. 1993 merc sable with a rebuilt 3.8. Has two problems. One, the fan never comes on. I have been told it is probably the integrated control relay module. this unit controls a bunch of different things. (160 bucks...figures)
The second problem is driving me batty. The car idles high, at like 2000 RPM. can't get it to drop no matter what i try. any input would be greatly appreciated.

![]() As for the CCRM (constant control relay module), what sucks about them is that they cost 160 dollars......guess what is inside a CCRM.......relays. That's it, only standard relays in a box, and they charge 160 dollars. You could pull it open and figure out which relay isn't working and replace it, i'm not sure if there's a neat way to get one open though. You could also try tapping on the CCRM with something and see if the relay gets unstuck to see if the fans turn on. Another thing you can do is since the power side is switched by the relay, jumper the power side and that should turn on the fans as well, to verify it is the CCRM.
As for idling high, try tapping the IAC valve lightly with a hammer and see if it comes down. You could also pull it open and clean it out with carb clean (they get gunked up inside) and see if that helps at all. To pull it open, all it would cost is the cost of the gasket and the time to clean it. This is all i can think of for starters, keep us updated on how your progress is going.

![]() Thanks for the input. As for the fan, if i jump over the ccrm, the fan runs fine. it runs all the time,. but it runs fine.
As for the IAC, I will try that. This is the piece that sits on top of the throttle body at the input to the upper manifold, right? Has a two wire plug going into it?

![]() As far as the fan goes, two of the relays in the CCRM are used to control it. One works for low speed, and the other for high. Usually, when the fan won't work at all, the low speed relay is at fault. The way to verify this is to unplug the wire going to the temp sensor, with the engine running. If this causes the fan to turn on high, (may take up to 30 seconds), then the low speed relay is bad. I know this doesn't help much, thanks to the CCRM, but at least you'll know it is a fault inside the CCRM. If unplugging the sensor turns the fan on low, check the sensor. If this doen't turn the fan on, I would check the Black/Orange wire going to the CCRM for battery voltage. This is the always hot power feed to the CCRM. If it does have voltage, but the test above didn't turn the fan on, replace the CCRM. If it doesn't have voltage, trace it back and find out why. It goes to a fusible link that may be blown.
Good luck! Take care, ~Chris
