Military people
My little bro just registered for the draft..now my question is..with the oncoming war with Iraq what are his chances of being drafted?? or does the draft even exist anymore? I'd hate to see him go over their in that **** and get killed. Thanks.

I don't figure the government would use the draft unless an attack was made on the continental US. (The thing of it is, if there was an invasion of US soil, who wouldn't go fight?)
I think they learned that an impressed army would not work too well. (Vietnam) |
The "draft" does not currently exist, as our armed forces have been an "all volunteer" force for some time.
Technically the federal government COULD bring back the draft, but I just don't see it happening unless there was a direct threat to the U.S.. |
so if we went into war now with iraq we have enough military people to keep him from going..unless a major direct attack to the U.S. was made??

how old do you have to be if the draft was reinstated? meaning what is the age cut off?
|
I think it's ages 18-35? Not positive.....

draft ages.
I know the ages that could be drafted ,if congress were to reinstate the draft, are 18-26. I know this because when the first war with Iraq happened, I was 20 years old,and the news kept going through the ages that could be drafted. The way they explained it, they would start with the 20 year olds and go up to 26, then lastly get the 18 and 19 year olds. I had alot of sleepless nights thinking about what would happen if I did get drafted.

the only reason the draft would began again is in DIRE NEED. i.e. those damned Canadians took over a state........ Personally, i am 20 and not worried at all about the draft. if things got bad enough to warrant it, i should already be there... Course... i have a real funny philosophy that comes from the BOOK Starship Troopers. (don't get me started about the damned movie.) For you to be a "citizen" and exercise certain rights like voting, being on juries, and pretty much all other things that involve decision making on any level of the government, you must have served an active term in the military. this would weed out the people that do not care about their nation. my ballot would not be cancelled out by an idiot that knows nothing about civic duty. and yes, i plan on going into the army or the navy as soon as I’m done with paramedic school. |
36 is the cut off age, unless you are prior military, then you subtract your years served from your age, but it's a choice thing then.i can still join if i want to, lol hold me back. :D :D :D :p

I'm positive we wouldn't see a draft until we've been IN a war for a couple of years and if we were AND people stopped volunteering (which I think more people would actually sign) THEN we might see a draft. There is absolutely no need for it right now, and not even at the beginning of a war. There are so many enlisted.

Let me save you some time ... nada ziltch zero zip What i hate most about that kind of statement is there was never one shread of evidence to substantiate it ... but liberals throw it out there so many times that it somehow becomes common knowledge and fact even though it isn't now nor has it ever been fact. The US adminstration lost that war NOT THE SOLDIERS !!! Sorry thdrcat i don't blame you for that, like i said its "common knowledge" you just made the mistake of saying it around a Vietnam vetran. ;) no harm no foul just straightening out the record a bit. |
Not likely.
I wouldn't worry Eric about your little brother being drafted for service. Congressional appoval needed for reinstatement unless invasion on US soil. The current military strategic plan would use long range weapons, surface to air missles and mostly air strikes in lieu of man-to-man combat.
Our history of major military actions really doesn't show how we would handle a conflict with Iraq. We learned many things in previous armed conflicts that we will (hopefully) not do again. http://www.sss.gov/ Here is the link the the slective service. Read on brother. ~Jane~ |

Actually Jane alot of this war is going to be on the ground unfortunately. There will be strategic missle strikes etc. but it wont all be like that to get Saddam out of power.
anyways i highly doubt that the draft will be reinstated. The recruiting depots had to hold people back from joining after 9/11 because the military already has alot of people. There will not be any invasions of the U.S. by terrorists I gaurantee that. That is not terrorist style. I agree with you about Vietnam Hotroddin. Of course im not old enough to remember it lol. |

Eric- Worst case scenario, if he did get called up, he'd probably just fill in here for the Guard. They'd want better trained soldiers, I would think, for battle. |
I wouldn't worry about your little bro man. He'll be okay. There are plenty of us already going. I'm serving active army. I'm just about finished with my 1 year tour in korea.(18 days left) then I'm going to 101st at Ft Campbell, Ky where I will most likely be shipped right back out to Iraq. But atleast I'll be home for christmas.:) If I don't go right away I should have about 6 months or so state side. Time to make up for a lot of lost driving/racing time.
