NEED PC HELP
I just recently got a new processor and mother board. The guy at the compter store told me I had to format my hard drive and reinstall windows. So i formated the hard drive and went to install windows. It says that u need to format ur hard drive for windows then i do that. When it get to like 90% done I get a error message that says windows can not be insalled on my hard disk. I don't know what to do. Is my hard drive bad?

What version of Windows are you trying to install?
|
I wouldnt think changing the MB and chip would affect the HD.. I usually dont listen to counter help at computer stores.. most are just that... and I said MOST... no flames.. hehe

Might as well re-partition the HD also. I suggest leaving a 1gig partition at the end of the drive to be your (SWAP) partition. This will help avoid fragmentation of your Windows partition. So in other words, make as large as a partition that you can minus 1gig. Then go back and create a 1 gig partition for your swap file after. Once windows is installed, you can go to your system info in your control panel, and make a custom setting to use your D: drive as your swap partition.

Speaking of windows problems, anybody had a problem with Windows grabbing such a big chunk of Virtual Memory that if you try to run any windows based apps it just freezes? This happens about every 2 months for me. I have to go and set the Virtual Mem to "0", reboot, set it back to default, and reboot. Kinda a pain......I hate windows....

Partitions are a big pain in the butt. I wouldn't do that. It's one thing if you have two physical drives, but if it's just one drive with one set of heads, it's not worth it. As far as swap files go, the remedy is to have a huge hard drive, 20GB or more and a lot of memory.
I'd like to hear more as to what Windows version he is using. If it's 95 or 98, I would suggest that he use a boot disk with FDISK and FORMAT on it to format the hard drive, as well as the drivers necessary to access his CD-ROM. Then, he should create a directory called WINSETUP or something and copy everything on the CD to that directory. He should then reboot and run setup from that directory. ------------------ 351W 89 Mustang GT Convertible |
When you swap mobo's, windows often does need to be reinstalled because it fusses so much. "need to install driver so you can use CDROM, please insert the Win CD in that drive so that I can copy files from it....Error, cannot read from drive drive not installed.....insert CD in drive to install drivers for drive....." I'd go with an above statement, and run FDISK from a boot disk, then restart. Winblows installer should automatically run scandisk before it lets you install though.
Windows also says great things like: "Error: the operation completed successfully" WTF!?!?!?! |
I am trying to install windows 98. I have the floppy with fdisk and all that on it. I put in the disk and it says to install windows 98 from the cd. When i do this it goes to a screen that says i need to reformat my hard drive. during the format it stops and says that windows 98 can't be installed on my computer. Then I try and install it straight from the d rive by typing in setup. It will go to the setup screen. Then when i hit the install it tells me i need 205 mg to install windows. My hard drive is 10g and is blank so i dont understand what is going on.

Did you use FDISK before you formatted?
|
Fdisk it.

Heres an easy way to setup windows with a new Mother board with out reinstalling.
After you install the new MB boot to safe mode and do the following. >Run "Regedit" >go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE >you will see a key called "Enum" delete that whole key. >reboot your system >after reboot you will have to reinstall all your drivers. Thats it! Hell for those of you that know windows enough you should know which keys to erease in Enum so you don't have to delete them all. Hope that helps some of you in the future. For your current problem we need more info. |
