New 1/4 mile ET from the drag strip!!!!!!!!!!
 

Okay, I just got back from the drag strip about 2-3 hrs ago and I am high as a kite. I've been doing drugs-- if you consider drag racing a drug.

I FINALLY get to go to the track after delays from my car, the weather, other circumstances, etc, etc, :mad: and the track is booming with people. Staging lanes full. (I'm trying to condense this story). Anyway, I only got to run one flippin time.
This was the first time I've ever run drag radials at the track. WONDERFUL experience.

Here is my old times and now my NEW times.

Upgrades since last time: rebuilt C4 w/ transgo, Nitto Drag radials, fiberglass hood, electric fan, fluidyne radiator, K&N X-stream filter, resurfaced drag strip.

Since I only got to run ONCE and this was my first time on drag radials, there was room for improvement:
1) I was surprise how hard I was able to come off the line and could've launched a bit harder.
2) I kinda babied the car (not much though) off the line and through 1rst and 2nd, but ran it hard after I regained my senses.
3) Got small header leak (right collector)
4) Car's shifting at about 3-400 rpms too high

Good things:
1) Track was sticky and very responsive.
2) Just about perfect burn out (maybe could have done it about 2 seconds more for better traction, but all in all, really good)
3) Dont' know if this is good or bad, but I ran the Nittos at 28 psi. I think Nitto tires (on the website) suggest starting at 20 lbs, but not going lower than 15. Maybe next time. It was really late and I didn't want to have to pump them back up to 30 for the long trip home.

I was yelling on the way back (on the return road after the 1/4 mile pass) b/c of how happy I was :D. I have been discouraged in the past by only being able to run a couple 14.1s with 255/60/15s, but they were Eagle street tires. The NIttos made a HUGE difference. That is honestly the quickest I have ever felt my car go (and it felt great). I was surprised. I was petting my dashboard on the way home like you would a puppy and telling it how proud I was of it.

13.4xx (or definitely 13.5) will be my goal for this car's current setup which I think is reasonable. Maybe I can pull a 1.88x to 1.900 60 ft time. What do you think? My speed was 98 mph (only gained 1 mph) and I guess that is just indicative of the torquey 351W as opposed to the 302s which I usually see running faster (100-103) through the traps.

Anyway, even though I had to wait a long time (a tad more than an hr) and only got to run once, it was worth it and I will definitely sleep well tonight.

Congrats man. Those are some very respectable times. You said that the car was shifting a few hundred rpm's to high. Are you shifting it or are you letting the tranny shift itself? If you are letting it shift by itself, try shifting it manually. Might pull another tenth or two just by doing that if you hit it right. Also I have no experience with the DR's but I'd say lowering the pressure a little more would also help. Launch it a little harder. I see you did get under 2 sec. in the 60 ft. Thats great. Dont take this the worng way man I'm not criticizin you at all, Heck I havent even had my car to teh track yet. Im just offering a little advice, trying to get your times better.

Hey man. I appreciate your advice, I won't take it the wrong way at all. :)

You're pretty much right. On this run, I decided to let the tranny shift itself. I had a lot of time to think about how I was going to do this ONE run (since I knew that would be all I could do for the night). I just decided to 1) let it shift by itself, 2) start at 28 psi (even though I could've started at 20), 3) do the burn out a certain way (I power braked the burn out for about 3 seconds--don't have line lok cause I don't really think I need it-- and when I started seeing smoke build up, I let off the brake and just about floored it. As the car was burning the back tires, it slowly started picking up speed as I was reaching the tree, then I let off after about another 3 second or else I would have passed the line.)

I basically wanted to see what the car would run on a clean pass without changing too many variables the first time through. Next time when I go, I want to try to get better and better times by trial and error (and small adjustments/tuning) and that will include shifting manually, and finding the best tire pressure (I did drop it from 35 psi which is what I usually run on the road). The front tires were at 39 psi (44 is max).

Hopefully, I'll be at the track not this sat night (tomorrow), but next Saturday night.

Whew, glad you didnt take it the wrong way man. At least your gonan get back to teh track and try to improve on those times as well. I know people that run one run and thats what their car will run forever. Have you ever thought about changing gears in that thing. If you had a 4.10 in it that thing would reaqlly come alive and you'd see those 60 foot times drop even more. I realize you drive it on the street mainly but man it would be alot of fun with the 4.10's

I am gonna post the video soon. It is kinda large though (3 mb). One thing I noticed in the video is the drop in rpm from 2-3rd gear (maybe it's just an artifact of the doppler effect, though).

I really have thought about 3.73s, but not 4.10s. Yeah, with MUCH traction, they'd get me some mean 60 ft times but I'm pretty sure they'll hurt my 1/4 mile time-- rpm would be way too high going through traps. I would've gotten 3.73s when I first put the rear end in, but it was the only car I had and where I live (kinda country area), everything is at LEAST 30 minutes away (except for gas stations). The drag strip is like 45-55 minutes away. 3.55s were as steep as I dared to go (esp since my job was an hr away). 3.73s may be in the future.

I got a question.

You're trapping at 98.63 mph with a 13.689 ET.

My best mph has been 102, however, my best it is right around 14.00. What gives? I've got some traction issues on street tires, and I've been having some serious shifting problems with my tranny (should get fixed in April with a nice shiny Lentech VB). I think with some pullies, an electric fan, some fuel upgrades, and better tuning, I can hit close to 13.5's.

What do you think guys??

Hey, thanks a lot guys for your support! :) Feels good. I know 13.6 is not super, lightning fast, but it's an achievement for me, a step along the way towards my goal of 11s (in the future). It's good to have friends cheering you on. :)

silver_pilate, the only thing I can think to attribute your higher trap speed to would be your transmission. You got overdrive and I don't.

82GT, Thanks man. I've got another friend around where I live who has a '79 w/ a 351W (he just got it on the road, but has had to work out some problems with the 5-speed manual. He's also keeping his eye on me as a guage for what he might run in the 1/4.

Feels great to hit 13s, yes. My goal is to hit mid 11s b4 the end of summer. ;)

Foxbody, I still think that 750 carb is a little too big. You might even run a little quicker with a 600-650 on there.
My 82 is FINISHED!!! It's setting in the garage just waiting for registration and inspection. It's not really "finished" but I'll keep doing minor things here and there to it after I get it inspected.
I am going to keep it tucked away in the garage until April.

Yeah, I'd have to say you're right about the carb, 82GT. Don't know though if I'll actually buy a new one. I'm pretty sure I mentioned to you I was planning on going blown with the Procharger D-1SC (intercooled) and the carb to use will be a diff Holley than the one I have now (I think the 650 cfm one), but it is a special one for forced induction. Thus, if it's diff than the regular 650 cfm carb, I don't wanna end up buying 2 carbs in a short period of time. I could be totally off here-- I need to talk to the Procharger guys again and get more details on this.

Maybe jetting down on what I have now will help, or hurt-- I'm not sure.

Anyways, GLAD to here your car is officially done-- at least street legal now. You'll probably never really be "finished". :D
