Talking New MW Chat Room!

Hey All - There is now a new web based chat room system that has been custom programmed for MW. It's also tied directly into the membership database, so it works with your existing member account. I've changed over all the links, so just click on "Chat Room" on the left navbar to sign in. Please let me know what you think and make sure it runs ok...

NOTE: You will probably need to be using either IE 5 and up or NS 6 and up for it to function correctly, and for the layout to look right. I've tested it in both the newer IE/NS platforms. Right now the new chat just covers all the basics, but gives a nice platform to add on to with additional features over time.

I think what we should do is give it a good testing out. Why doesn't everyone who can come to the chat room Wednesday evening at 9 PM EST time. I'll login then, so see you all there!

Well we had a few members come in tonight and chat for a while... Over all the new system worked really well it seemed, which is great!

I have now modded the message board so that the main forums homepage now shows who is talking in the chat room at any given time. Hopefully this will get more members in there and using it!

Over time I will be programming in extended features and functionality into the new chat system. If anyone can offer any feedback or suggestions on what should be added (i.e. a wish list) then post it here... So far, here is what I already plan to add to it:

Moderated Chat - The ability to designate one user in the chat as a "Speaker", who has normal typing voice. Once moderated chat is activated by the admin/mod, then only the speaker and admin/mod can openly type and have their messages immediate be displayed to the audience. All normal users typed messages will be listed in a "queue" on the admin/mod's display. The moderator can then choose what questions/msgs to display in an organized sequence for the speaker to see and respond to.

Chat Invitations - A member in the chat room will be able to send an invitation to other members. Once an invitation is sent, the next time the invited member loads a page on the site a notification will be displayed telling the member they have been invited by you to come and chat. If they click "Accept" the chat room will automatically pop open and then will be logged in. If they decline, they continue surfing as they were and a message is displayed to the member who sent the invite in the chat that the member declined the invitation.

Wow .... i was just about to let you know how quick and nice the new chat room was, then i read this ??? Maybe its just me, but i go in a chat room to shoot the breeze ... bench race .. whatever ... why such a rigid structure ?? I may be wrong, but i think if you do that as a general rule, you aren't gonna have many people go in there ? I can see it for special occasions, but not all the time

No no no... The moderation functionality would be so that we can have special guest chats in a question and answer type format. Without such functionality for doing it in a moderated fashion it would be a chaotic mess... But, normally.. no... The chat would run in its standard unmoderated mode like it does now...

Oh whew I misunderstood that. In that format its totally understandable. I really do like the new chat room, very fast and easy to use.
