Exclamation 3.73 Gear Install

Hey all, I want to install some 3.73 gears on my 1998 5-speed Mustang GT. I have a few questions, Where is a good place to order from at a good price? What all will i need to get? Just the gears? Or is there anything else special that i will need to buy in order for them to be installed. Do i need a new ring and pinon set or anything? Also, for adjusting the Speedometer, can i install some type of speedo gear on the 98gt or do i have to buy a speedcal?

I believe 98 still used the speedometer gear, after 98 is when you need to get the Speed Cal.

The Ring and Pinion is whats changed when you do "Gears". You will need shims, and pinion seals, and the whole nine yards. Ford Motor sports offers everything you need with there gears. I believe it comes around 209 Dollars.

You'll see gears sold for cheaper, like Zoom, but they dont give you the Bearings, Shims, or Seals like you need. You have to buy those seperate.

ok, i was told this is what i would need
$189 for the gears
$18 for carrier bearings
$24 pinon bearings
$20 outer bearings
$15 pinon seal
$14 23tooth speedo gear
$250 for installation

That comes out to about $530
Is that what everone is paying or am i getting ripped?

PonyPride:
I'm not sure where you are located but that price is probably close to what it's going to cost me here in the Northeast.

That sounds a little high. Performance Plus, a local Mustang shop, does 3:73 installs for $298, and thats w/ them providing everything. The gears are FRPP too, no cheap stuff.
Now, disc rears and speedo gear are slightly extra, but the price couldn't go much over $400, if it even gets that high. They did my '91 Mustang in about 2 hours while I waited.
Try to find a reputable performance shop that really knows Fords. They should be able to do it for a better price then that and have it done by the end of the day.

I love my Tri-ax. I had one before in a 95GT so I didn't hestitate getting another. You will hear some more tranny noise but it's worth it.

Those prices look about right if you go with the ford parts. Some people only change the ring, pinion, crush sleave, and pinion seal. All of the other bearings will help make the gears a lot quieter. Thats a fair price on the install if a shop is doing it. Far cheaper than what the shops charge around here.

In Florida, the average total install and parts price is about $430.00 out the door.
