This shows your lack of hockey knowledge. It is widely accepted and well known that the Red Wings are one of the wealthiest teams in the league, and have one of the highest payrolls in the league as well.

Here's a nice little piece from ESPN on ROY. Saying this was his best year and he is a favorite to win MVP of the league. http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/preview?gameId=220418017

who cares...

The Oilers are out. They are my team.

And EVERYONE who knows anything about hockey has to agree that the best series in the playoffs is the Stars vs. the Oilers. Hands down, the best.

Roy is a baby. I dislike like his attitude, however he is a very talented goaltender.

Ponygirl67 04-18-2002 11:33 PM

Have the Canucks EVER won the stanley cup????? I dont think so, but I am not a hard cord hockey fan...I love the playoffs though and we are going to the top boys.....GO CANUCKS GO!!!!!:D :D

HiFlow5 0 04-18-2002 11:49 PM

BRUINS, BRUINS, BRUINS, but they will probably be knocked out in the first round again. So I'll have to fall back on my second favorite team, the AV's!

Maybe compared to the other teams they do have more money, but that wasn't really my point anyway. In hockey you can't buy the Stanley Cup . It just doesn't work like other sports or at least it hasn't yet.

The New Jersey Devils won the cup in 2000 with a mid-level payroll and Colorado's payroll wasn't exceedingly high until after they won the cup last year and gave Sakic, Roy, and Blake big contracts. A big payroll in the NHL doesn't mean that you will win.

That is why I drew the parallel with the yankees. The Red Wings are not the Yankees of hockey. Yes, they probably do have more money than a lot of teams, but they are an original six, are in a huge market for hockey, have been sucessful the last decade, which means the Joe has been sold out for god knows how long, and that gives them more money to spend. They spend the money by rewarding players such as Yzeerman, Lidstrom, Federov, Shanahan, and others for the hard work and grit they have put into the team. Those players weren't just big name free agents when Detroit won in 97' and 98' who signed on that year to try and "buy" the cup. Yzerman, Federov, and Lidstrom had been on the wings for a while and deserved the money they have gotten. And I'm pretty sure they didn't get the big bucks until after they won the cup.

I'll say it again. A big payroll doesn't guarantee you get to take lord Stanley out waterskiing in Manitoba in the summer, or back home to your European country of birth, or whatever you chose to do with your day with the cup. Teamwork, Skill, Luck, and good ole' fashion grit your teeth Hockey does. And if the Wings are fortunate enough to win this year it will be for those reasons and not $ the$e $.

Mach 1 04-19-2002 07:36 AM

well, I agree with some of what your saying. Yes, teams havent been able to buy the cup, but Detroit certainly seems to be trying. Along with the rangers. The rangers have failed miserably. The wings have been successful for many years now, and were a good team before they started signing big money free agents.

However, this doesnt take away from the fact that they have a huge payroll and can aquire a lot of players that other teams cant afford to pay, Hasek being a good example.

A lot of people tend to root for the team that can get it done with a lower payroll, and less big name stars. Im not trying to take anything away from the wings. they are a great team, and have great coaching and management.

But you cant deny they have large dollars and pay a lot of "veterans" large money that other teams dont have the luxery of doing. Does this mean they will win the cup automatically? Of course not, but it certainly isnt going to hurt thier chances.

Does the water in Omaha destroy brain cells? Oh wait, of course it does. I should know that after reading your informative post.

No Sh*t. He is a good goalie. I admitted that. I like it how Roy lost a fight to little 5' 9" Mike Vernon. Lost badly I might add. And then he tied in a fight with Osgood, who is another little guy. I wasn't comparing him with Hasek either. I'll take Terry Sawchuk in his prime over Roy in his prime any day of the week! Theres your Roy comparison with a Red Wings goalie.

I hope you were joking about the Lemieux thing, because if you weren't your a moron, plain and simple. Don't get me going again about that panzie. I don't know many people, even Colorado fans, that will actually defend him.

Crazy Horse GT 04-19-2002 04:26 PM

hahahaha, corn is in the way , go king's, we know they are tough, & who traded them two of their best player's, uuuhhh jeeezz the av holes. bwahahaha, better dig ray dork back up:rolleyes: :D :D :D

geno5.0 04-20-2002 12:11 PM

(hahahaha, corn is in the way ,) (, just a fact. what is it with all these jr member's trying to flame on senior member's- if i may borrow your sentence unit?) And just because you have posted more than me on this site it does not make you better than me!!!
