Ok smart guys.....try this puzzle?!!!!!
Im sure some one has seen this one....the idea is that there are 3 houses and 3 utilities ( water, electric, and phone). each house is across from a utility...
W E P H H H the idea is to connect each utility to each house without crossing the lines. what do you think? Oh yea, you also cannot say that the plumbing is underground!! lol..It doesnt work that way! ------------------ 95'gt, 75mm bullet, 30#inj, 75mmtb, Tfs track heat intake, 255 pump, billet fuel regulator, msd btm, underdrive pulley's, pro 5.0 shifter, off road h-pipe, flowmasters, turbo technology's t-04b, all turbo pipes are jet hot coated, running an unequal length header on driver side ;) MY TURBO MUSTANG! |
Umm... run each utility to the house across the street from it and connect the the lines from the house to house.. maybe I don't understand the question.. this place is getting crazy.. http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/smile.gif
I got a quiz for ya.. "How much wood would a woodchuck chuck, if a woodchuck would chuck wood?" (pull my finger to find out) http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/biggrin.gif ------------------ Rick My 89lx(updated 7/20/2001) |

That's what I came up with, but I wanted to see if anyone else had any other ideas before I posted.
HEY!!! WTF??? WHO FARTED??? |
err... not me.. =x (I smell it though)
|
Run the utility to each house across from it. The house on the left has solar panels and a HAM radio, the house in the middle has a well and a HAM radio, and the house on the right has a well and solar panels.
Piece of cake. BTW, anyone got a match? Yeh I don't think there is anyway to solve this problem unless you connect the lines from one house to another. I'll keep trying though. But I think there is no way.

My friend came up with this
idea. W connected to E to P. cause they use each other. then one to each house. I don't know if that sounds right or not. hard to say cause I can't draw it on here. w-e-p ! ! ! h h h kinda like that? |
This puzzle is similar to the following two puzzles which are unsolvable.
Cross all 7 bridges (gray rectangles) only once. http://people.mn.mediaone.net/jimber...s/7bridges.jpg Cross each line segment only once. http://people.mn.mediaone.net/jimber.../puzzlebox.jpg ------------------ 351W 89 Mustang GT Convertible |

|/|\| W E P Ok guys, how bout this: I have the houses arranged on the top and the utilities on the bottom. Water is routed to house on the left and the house in the middle, then water is routed from center house to house on the right. Electricity is sent to center house where is then rerouted to both houses on the left and right. Telephone is sent to house on the right and house in the middle, house in the middle then sends a phone line to house on left. This is what I came up but I may be wrong. |
Jim-
Maybe I didn't understand the instructions, but wouldn't this work: http://homepage.mac.com/pkrwud/.Pict...puzzlebox.jpeg Take care, -Chris ------------------ Retired Moderator MustangNet My site: Peckerwoods Pit Stop http://homepage.mac.com/pkrwud/.Pict...sc./MyMac.jpeg My teams site: Jim Porter Racing RACECAR spelled backwards is RACECAR HEY !!! hey, quit trying to use up all my brain cells.
Pththththt.. Ididntdoit. |
Sorry, Chris, I guess I wasn't clear enough. The outside segments count, too.
------------------ 351W 89 Mustang GT Convertible |
PKRWUD, in Jim's puzzle you missed all of the outside line sections, just thought I'd interject. He is correct that those two are unsolvable, however your puzzle is lacking a lot of information leaving it open to multiple solutions from running any utility from the rear side of the utility itself to the rear side of the middle house and so on.
don't know if this helps any but have fun anyway. Thanks for the puzzles. ------------------ Jason Kimball "The Gecko" |
Jim-
Thanks. I was thinking that was the frame. Gecko- None of these were my puzzles. Don't give me the credit, I make a living trying to solve problems, not create them! Geckos_mustang, you can assume that you can connect lines at an infinite number of points in a circle around the utilities and houses. You can also place the utilities and houses in any position that you wish on the planet. You may also have your lines be as long as you want, even circling the globe. It would still be impossible. The easiest way to figure this out is to draw a diagram connecting two houses to all of the utilities. Now, try to place the 3rd house anywhere on the diagram where you can hook up the three utilities. As you can see, it's impossible.

95gtSTANG, what's the answer bro??
|
hah...I see i have people in anticipation.
I had no idea, but i posted this same thing on the corral....I think the proper solution is to roll the paper in a cylinder and route some of the lines around back....its pretty kewl....it basically turns it in to a 3d solution...kinda ------------------ 95'gt, 75mm bullet, 30#inj, 75mmtb, Tfs track heat intake, 255 pump, billet fuel regulator, msd btm, underdrive pulley's, pro 5.0 shifter, off road h-pipe, flowmasters, turbo technology's t-04b, all turbo pipes are jet hot coated, running an unequal length header on driver side ;) MY TURBO MUSTANG! |
Try this one.
Using one continuous line connect all the dots; you can only have 4 lines or change direction 3 times but the line has to be continuous and can not have any breaks in it. http://www.netsnapshot.com/users/226...g_2263_8.pjpeg ------------------ James Cox nochevy@hotmail.com 1991 Mustang LX |
There is no solution within the scope of the rules you posted. You can't use a cylinder or a sphere to make it work, either. You could probably use a torus, but then going into 3D would open up the possibility of saying that the phone lines are on poles and the water and power are underground.
As for the last puzzle, you can do it with one continuous line with no turns if you wrap it around the globe. If the solution must be planar, you could draw three lines. http://people.mn.mediaone.net/jimber...s/solution.jpg ------------------ 351W 89 Mustang GT Convertible |
That is not the solution and there is an answer and it is not a trick question.
Draw the 9 dots on a piece of paper and try that, I made the dots a little big but they are just dots. ------------------ James Cox nochevy@hotmail.com 1991 Mustang LX [This message has been edited by Five0 (edited 11-02-2001).] |
Are you saying that the dots are just a single point in space and that the lines must intersect those points? If so, here's the solution:

ROFL!! Jim, can I borrow some brain cells?!
Wanna do my taxes too?? (I'd prolly get all my money back!) http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/smile.gif |
If it can't be underground, then it can't be up in the air either. Basically, that was covered in the "lines can't cross each other clause". That contradicts the 3D explanation. The puzzle has no solution.

ARGHH, this reminds me too much of school, i'm in a math degree program for C&O. (which I'm not at right now, I'm working!!)
But, I'm pretty sure that no solution exists, since we are looking for (in graph theory terms) a complete bipartite graph drawn on a 2-dimensional plane with no overlapping arcs. see this page for details, and if there is a solution to this problem, the person who solves it should take my place at school (which starts back up for me in January!) http://www.utm.edu/departments/math/...ossary.html#kn ------------------ 94 GT (triple black) FMS 17" Cobra R's / AL Driveshaft / 3.27's K&N, 190 lph, subframes, motorsports hd clutch, mac pulleys, msd coil MAC Shifter/Gauges/Pedals, Euro Clear Projectors & Corners My CAR! |
HERE'S one for ya, that actually does have an answer !!! http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/smile.gif
You have two strands of rope (not necessarily same length!) known to take 30 minutes EACH to burn completely. You need to measure 45 minutes of time, how do you do this given the two ropes, and a match? |
Was that ONE match? If so, fold rope A at a 90 degree angle, with the fold point being the very middle of that rope. Light it with the match. When it burns to the middle point, use it to ignite the second rope. When the second rope has finished burning, 45 minutes have passed.

That's gotta be right for the rope one.

Or just burn all of one rope and half of the other one.
Rev ------------------ '66 Coupe, 306, 300 HP, C-4, 13.97 e.t., 100.3 mph 1/4 mi. |
Start one rope burning at both ends and then when it is almost out light one end of the remaining rope.
------------------ 351W 89 Mustang GT Convertible |
Cut one rope in half and lay it end-to-end with the other rope and light one end. Save the other 15 minutes for some other time.
|
Burn one rope and half the other one. Smoke the other half rope while you contemplate the deep relevance of all this.
