digital3.3 10-21-2002 09:29 PM

holy crap dude thats harsh. what happened????

srv1 10-21-2002 09:31 PM

your trying the economical way of making two 4cylinders?

ultraflo 10-21-2002 09:49 PM

OUCH...

...that had to hurt! I'm amazed that I didn't have the same happen to me over the course of this past season...

Those pictures made me cringe... approx. how much HP was that motor making before it split in two?

.....you know, the new Dart block is a real nice piece, lol ;)

HotRoddin 10-21-2002 09:54 PM

I don't think i ever saw a block split lengthwise into two 4 bangers like that ?? Do you know where it started ? are any of the rod or main journals spun or blue ? Maybe shoved a piston through a cylinder wall ? Where did the crank break ?? You can learn alot from disaster ! :(

1969Mach1 10-21-2002 09:56 PM

Damn dude, that is crazy.....! I'm sure it scared the **** out of you when it happen......

§am.

tireburner163 10-21-2002 09:56 PM

Oh I feel like a vulture but do you want that mangled piston and rod? It would look awesome on my wall:D

Actully I'll take anything off of it you don't want. I'll pay shipping.

l8ter,
Josh, aka the tireburner

actually it happend at 4 grand.

ive been doing some calling around and it seems that the stock(cast) crank starts stressin around 350hp(ive exceeded that by just a "few") well i found that the crank just couldnt handle anymore stress.

what really urks me is, you build a car to race and it breaks when you take it out for a short evening cruise(not even street racing!)

joe4speed 10-21-2002 10:06 PM

OMG that really sucks... Those pics hurt. :(

Coupe Devil 10-21-2002 10:06 PM

Now thats cool. Not to be making fun of your mis-fortune but that is something ive never seens before. Ive seen em blow the bottom or one side completely out but never split down the entire middle of the block

Pokey 5.0 10-21-2002 10:11 PM

actually it didnt scare me at all, when it first happend i thought i broke the trans again. once i found out what it was i couldnt do anything but laugh about it.(this was a long time coming)

the cause was a rather common problem that for knew about. once the 5.0 HO exceeds 350hp, the snout of the crank has a tendency to break at the counterweight right behind cyls #1 and #5. im not sure why the block broke like it did and neither is FORD(my bro took it to work today and a ford engineer looked at and took several pics of it too. waiting to hear back)

josh, pending what ford says, id consider sending you the snout of the crank. im keeping the piston/rod and im putting it in a glass case and titling it" THE LITTLE ENGINE THAT COULD, DID, AND NOW NO LONGER CAN!"

Crazy Horse GT 10-21-2002 10:45 PM

wow i have never seen a block break in half like that.  , note to self[ dont dog ol crazy too much.] :D :D

Capri306 10-22-2002 12:20 AM

Owwie! Yeah, I've seen 5.0L's do that with too much boost before, but not at only 4 grand! I have the feeling that there was something wrong with the block in the first place....or something else with the crank, at least. They don't typically just go BOOM! What's all that stuff on top of the pistons, anyway? Looks pretty nasty!

<ducking> :p :p

Kevn 10-23-2002 09:46 PM

no biggie

Pshhh, thats easy. I'll tell ya what you do. Head to the hardware store and pick up a couple tubes of JB weld, also maybe a roll of duct tape. No problemo. ::rolleyes: Yeah right eh? Good luck with your new engine.

thdrcat 10-24-2002 12:08 AM

after seeing that pic, i went out and hugged my block. sigh. that is some deep **** right there.

Pokey 5.0 10-24-2002 06:35 PM

by now most of you have seen the destruction of my motor. Tuesday night i was in the garage taking a look at everything to see what might be salvagable, and all that looks like ill be saving are my rocker arms and my upper/lower intake. (my poor ******* heads that i have over 50+ hours of port work in are both cracked)

now i think im just gonna make 2 end tables out of the 2 halves of the block.

Ackbar00 10-25-2002 11:51 AM

What was it running at the track before it broke?
