Post I made my decision!!!!

I mentioned in an earlier post that I was thinking about trading my Alpine system for an '89 4 cyl coupe so that I could swap the engine/tranny/exhaust from my '82GT.
I decided that I am going to trade the guy and begin a new project!!
I am thinking that the coupe will be lighter thus quicker than the GT body.
I am also going to eliminate every extra pound of weight that I can.
I estimated that my GT would have ran high 13's and I am looking for low 13's with just a chassis swap and weight trimming.
Do you think that is possible or will I still need more engine mods for low 13's?

I really doubt an '89 Coupe weighs any less than your '82GT, dude.

According to the NADA website, the 86GT weighs in at 3000 lbs, so does the 87 5.0 LX Coupe.

If you are looking to shave 1/2 sec, your gonna need more engine or performance mods. I don't think you're gonna be able to get more than a couple hundo out of the coupe before weight savings gets slim.

No Way, That can't be correct. Coupes are usually always lighter than the hatchbacks and converts. Did you every try to carry one of those hatches from a hatchback? Try it....they are freakin HEAVY!!
I'll check on it but I still think the lightest mustang you can get is an LX coupe.
I don't think they make those anymore though.

I don't think you'll be much, if any at all, lighter. The 82gt's stock curb weight is only a few pounds heavier (3049 vs 3027 according to Insurance Corp. of British Columbia Data) than an 87-89 4 cyl. notch and that is with the 4 cyl. I think it would be a lot of effort for a marginal improvement.

The hatch may feel heavy compared to a trunklid but add in the weight of the rear window and the piece that goes across the base of the window. The difference is not that big. To drop 5/10ths you'd need to drop at least 300lbs, there is no way that coupe is 300lbs lighter than an 82gt.

Yes, I actually have carried a hatch before. They are heavy, but if I can carry it, it's certainly not more than 150lbs. And like was posted, you have to compare that to the coupe's trunk, and rear glass. Not much of a difference anymore after you do that.

Anyway, my data was obtained from the www.nada.com website.

It listed
1986 GT Hatch 5.0 3000 lbs
1987 LX Coupe 5.0 3000 lbs
1987 LX Hatch 5.0 3059 lbs
1987 GT Hatch 5.0 3080 lbs

I was making the swap just because I thought it would be lighter. The 89 is in much better condition and the wiring harness in my '82 is fried, which I really don't want to mess with anymore.
I just thought maybe I would be a little bit lighter as a bonus but I guess not.
Oh well, I'll have a car in better shape and a summer project.
