Well, I don't claim to have all your answers here, but I have done this before. Make sure you prime the trim before painting. I painted the black trim around my doors and windows without priming and it didn't even last a year. They are now primed and are holding up great.....besides a little whitening from wax getting on the trim.

I dont' know what the stuff I used was...I think it may have been Dupli-Color black trim paint and their gray primer. Whatever it was, it was readily available a the local auto parts store. Good luck!
