Default Pentium 4 Intel or Celeron?

Hey guys
I am going to buy a new computer with income tax.
What is the difference between th Intel Pentium 4 processor and the Intel Celeron processor?
I'm have the pentium III Intel 300mhz(yeah, it's outdated)
and was told the Intel chip is better than the Celeron chip.
What do you recommend? I like to play video games so I need a fast processor. Also, what other stuff should I look for in a new computer.
Oh yeah, what about that AMD processor? Is that any good?
I want to make sure I get a good system.
Thanks

Well first off, you do not have a PIII 300Mhz processor because it was never made. You might have a PII 300Mhz, but the slowest PIII is around 450-500Mhz.

The Celeron and the P4 are completely different chips. Their boards are different and they have different front side buses. The P4 will blow the Celeron out of the water for performance.

The AMD chipsets are the Duron, and the Athelon. The Athelon will make mince meat out of the P4 at the same clock speed. IE 1.2 vs 1.2, and it's faster even a couple ticks back in fact. I would much rather have a Duron than a Celeron. The Duron is a little outclassed by a good PIII, but it's faster than the Celeron.

The other things that are vital for good video game performance are a high powered video card, and lots of RAM.

I just bought my new computer, I got a intel pentium 4 processor which is 1.4 GHz, Its awsome, both Celeron and Pentium 4's are made by Intel, but the pentiums are alot better, I don't know alot about the AMDs, but do get lots of RAM

Stay away from the celeron. PIII or PIV are fine. Super high speed isn't that important. Windows 98 still seems to be the best as far as working with the most computer games.

I suggest you stay away from the Duron and Celeron if you want to play games. Go for the AMD Thunderbird (Eqv. to the PIV) or the PIV itself. Also build your own computer appose to buying a Brandname like Compaq, or IBM. You'll be able to customize it to your gaming needs and will be able to upgrade it alot easier in the future. Get a good video card, atleast 32mb, and lots of Ram especially with it dropping in price, if you like the sound that goes with it I suggest Sound Blaster Live 5.1 with a nice set of speakers, make sure your getting a good mother board, I am a fan of Asus, CD-Rom is pretty straight forward. But basicly just go to them say what your looking around to spend and say what your looking to use it for and go from there.

Take Care,
§am

I would pony up for the AMD chip. Pentiums, in my opinion, are over-rated and over-priced. AMD makes chips that perform as well or better than their competitors in just about every category out there. I run an AMD Athelon Thunderbird 1.2Ghz. Make sure you've got plenty of cooling power in there...lots of fans and a good cooling tower.

A buddy just finished his computer with AMD's new Athelon XP processor. It really kicks serious butt. Runs cooler than my Thunderbird as well. I believe that's the processor Dan just put in the new server.

I can set you up with whatever you need, at always a guaranteed lowest price .

There is nothing wrong with the celeron, its just not a gaming chip. It really depends what you want to do with the computer as to how you should build it. And your budget etc.

The new celerons with the Tualitin Core and 256k cache perform quite well.

It all depends what you want to do.

Give me a call 10-6 M-F PST. 11-4 Sat PST.

Unit, I meant to say I had a pentium II but I think you knew that already. Just a typo error I made.
Thanks everyone for all your advice. I was already partial toward the P4 Intel but wanted to see what the actual difference was in performance. I guess it's either a P4 or AMD Athelon.

Sorry man, I've seen a couple people talking about PIII 300Mhz processors I just wanted to make sure the trend stopped.

I wouldn't necessarily rule out the Duron, but like he said, Skyman runs his own computer business, and he can set you up with a killer system.

Go with the AMD XP chip. Intell sucks! The only problem with AMD is they get hot but if you have a good CPU fan, you won't have a problem. I have the AMD XP 1.7GHz chip in my computer and it blows my friends 1.8 Intell out of the water and then some!!!

Intell = Camaro
AMD = MUSTANG

AMD gets my vote. I just finished the upgrade on mine and ended up only spending about $220.00. Not to bad if I do say so myself!

1.3 athelon
512mb 266
tried out the new ECS motherboard, no problems after I switched over to DDR (for some reason 133 RAM was messing up the Bus)
cheap video card but better than the one I had some Gforce 2 chip set card. Runs like a champ.

Buying the intel pentium anything is like buying the new nike jordans everyyear, It just doesn't make sense to me. Just my humble opinion.

hmmmm........ the scale is tipping towards the AMD chip.
Now what is a good video card? How is the Voodo 3000 or whatever it's called? The sound blaster 5.1 sounds like it's supposed to be a good sound card.
I was going to settle for 128MB of RAM but I think I want 256 megs now. I want excellent game quality.

As I said you really need to evaluate what your going to do with the system and your budget.

So many people buy over powered system for what they are going to use.

To say something as ignorant as P4 sucks, or AMD rules doesn't help at all.

I prefer the AMD for myself, but I definatly sell more Intels, and I do recommend them.

Sky, I visited your website and was playing around with creating a system. It's pretty cool how it keeps a tally of the price as you select different options.
Your right, I am probably better off customizing a system.
I know what you mean when you say people buy overpowered systems. I am an "overkill" person myself and will probably end up doing just that.(it must be in my blood or something...lol)
Interesting website you have....fair prices
