Intel was better until processor speeds broke beyond the gigahertz mark...now AMD is just as good, excelling faster, and cheaper :)

LxMustangRacer 09-22-2002 07:33 PM

Let's see if I can remember everything

My two computer's i've built
Dorm comp
CPU - XP1600+ running at 1.53Ghz
Motherboard - msi k7n420 pro
memory - 512MB crucial pc2100 @ cas2
heatsink - alpha pal8045 w/ ystech fan(30cfm)
video - geforce2 mx400
hard drives - ibm 60gxp 60GB, western digital wd800jb 80GB
Drives - Pioneer 16x dvd drive, lg 40x/10x/40x cd-rw
firewire card
pc power and cooling turbo cool 300 watt power supply
winxp professional
logitech mouse and intel wireless mouse
lexmark z12 printer(free w/ 3 months internet)
dell 17" monitor(free, old part from a comp at work)
klipsch proaudio 2.1 speakers
campus network

Comp sitting at home
CPU - XP1600+ running at 1.6Ghz(1800+ equivalent)
Motherboard - Abit KG7
Memory - 512MB crucial pc2100 @ cas2
heatsink - alpha pal8045 w/ ystech fan(30cfm)
video - ati radeon 64mb
soundcard - sound blaster live
hard drives - ibm 60gxp 40GB, maxtor 80GB
Drives - HP 12x dvd drive, sony 12x/8x/24x cd-rw
firewire card
winxp professional
generic mouse and intel wireless mouse
lexmark printer
generic 16" monitor
altec lansing 4.1 speaker
cable modem

It's getting to the point where intel processors and amd processors excel in different areas. So to know which one is better you have to look at what you use your comp for the most and then see which processor does better. You have to think now, you can't just pick the one with the higer mhz number. If you hate noise you're probably better off with intel, amd processors tend to run hot and require a better heatsink(faster, and thus, louder fan) than pentiums.

Skyman 09-22-2002 10:31 PM

Wow lot of athlon chips... Im surprized as AMD has steadily been losing market share.

I don't really prefer one brand over the other, but in the 2.5ghz spectrum INTEL is cheaper, more stable and faster.

In the 1.5-1.8ghz area, the amd chips are dirty cheap.

I have a Athlon XP1500 Laptop
256MB DDR266
CDRW/DVD Combo
14.1" Screen
802.11 Wireless Card

I really only use it for surfing the web though.

2.5ghz...i knew tehy went that high, but i was basing my opinion on the 1.5-1.8 area like you mentioned...i stopped keeping track of them after everything starting getting too high to care...you dont notice a difference between a 1ghz and a 2ghz IMO, its all about the RAM now....

6T9PONY 09-22-2002 11:24 PM

How come it took so long to get from like 133 mHz to 1 gHz, but it took no time to get clear up to 2.5 gHz after that? Is technology just accelerating that quickly?

Titan 09-22-2002 11:33 PM

Ok...this is coming in late, but I have the P4 1.8 GHZ w/ 1/2gig rambus RD ram--all bought a 1 1/2 years ago...talk about pricy, but it's still kickin @ss.

As for the advance in technology, the military has 30+ ghz comps...I've seen a few at my school--they are monsters. The towers are about 12' tall...and they have their own AC units (ok, that exagerating...but they're huge). These things run so many simultaneous programs it's not even funny. The technology is out there, but the demand has (and probably never will) catch up. Besides, who needs a 30 GHZ computer???

Skyman 09-22-2002 11:41 PM

There is a Law that was made up by a guy in the late 70's. I can't remember the name of it now, but what it states, is that every 18 months silicon microprocessor techology doubles itself, so we are going at an exponetial rate of growth in speed and technology.

Skyler

Skyman 09-22-2002 11:44 PM

Ahh I was a bit off, the law was made in the 60's, heres a lot more info on it, is quite interesting if you take the time to glace it over. Gives you an idea where we are going to be going here in the near future.

http://www.intel.com/research/silicon/mooreslaw.htm

Another very interesting, but longer article on what the future holds as far as CPU's and what computers are gonig to do for us is this...

http://www.intel.com/labs/eml/patinterview.htm

Skyler

jj_jonathon 09-22-2002 11:49 PM

they also changed the design of the chip at the pentium 4...its smaller and faster, easier to develop further upon...so its all about technological enhancements....

titan is right...who needs a 30ghz computer?....YET....imagine telling someone back in 89 when the 486 came out that you would use a 30gb harddrive....lol..."whats a GIGAbyte?"...wait 10 years then see if we have 30ghz processors...right now, theres nothing for personal use to need that....

mustangII460 09-22-2002 11:50 PM

I spent bucks overhauling this machine with all the bells and wistles. Waiting for less expensive DVD burner. I think there is not a real popular standard yet.

By far the best item is my Logitech Daul Optical "Wheel" mouse. I freak when I get on a system that does not have a wheel mouse. Maybe should pass some kind of law about that.

Something so simple but can drive me Kookoo!

Skyman 09-22-2002 11:51 PM

JJ-Jonathon Think about the applications that you would need to utilize, to make a 30ghz CPU necessary, thats the type of stuff we need to think about.

Things that need instant reactions, or even anticipations of our actions... ohh scary isn it?

Capri306 09-23-2002 12:13 AM

Well, have you guys read about "The Cell" chip that Intel, IBM, and Sony are working on? It's due for production in 2004-5, and it is reported to be operating in the single-digit TERAHERTZ range (like 1.8THz) or so!!!  I guess from what I read, they don't feel like waiting for Moore's Law (you know, processor speed doubling every 18 months), and the demand for faster processors in video game systems is very high. They're saying that video games in the near future will look like and be as smooth as the movie "Toy Story". The "cell" itself is supposedly about 16 chips integrated to operate as one somehow... Don't quote me on any of this, I just read it from somewhere, and I'm not someone to believe all that I read. ;)

Okay, the "Budget" system I assembled a month ago for "schoolwork" :p
1. PC Chips mainboard, Click here to see the specs. Has an AMD Duron mounted to it from the factory
2. AMD Athlon XP 2000+ processor
3. DVD/CD-ROM...think it's a 48x, but it's fast whatever it is!
4. Micro-ATX case w/ 350W power supply
5. NVidia GeForce2 AGP video card (even though there's one built into the 'board).
6. Lucent 56k modem (oooooooh.......)
7. Floppy drive
8. Iomega ZIP 650 12x4x32 CD-RW/CD-R drive (cannibalized from my main living room machine)
9. There's a totaly of 3 fans in the machine: one on processor, one sucking, one blowing.
10. First HDD: Seagate 40GB 7200 RPM
11. Second HDD: Maxtor 60GB 7200 RPM
12. 256 MB of DDR
13. Then there's the $5 mouse, the $50 MS Office keyboard (this thing is a fReAk!), and the $125 17" flatscreen monitor.
14. Oh, and the network cable and switch to network this thing to my main living room computer.

I plan on adding more memory eventually (it'll handle up to 2GB worth of SDRAM or DDR), but for spending less than $500 on the system, I think I did pretty well. I just can't believe how stable it is! I'm running WinXP Pro, Office XP Pro w/ FrontPage, and MS Visual Studio w/ .NET framework. On my old Win98se system, the C++ compiler seemed to crash it about every other time I'd compile a program. Can't believe how nice the .VOB~.AVI conversions are. Very stable!!! I used to belong to the Intel camp, as well. The support from AMD is outstanding comparatively!

Oh, and you Apple guys aren't allowed to post here..... ;) J/K!!!!

uhh....AI anyone? ....god i hope not...terminator movies scared the usefulness outta that idea...lol...btw T3 comes out this coming summer! woo!

LxMustangRacer 09-23-2002 09:18 AM

capri, have you seen some screen shots of doom3 (coming out beginning of next year)? That's pretty damn close to toy story graphics already.
There's lots of places where we need more processing power. Graphics companies could use them to create better special effects quicker and cheaply. I like to do some video editing/encoding and rendering graphics as well, it'd be great to be able to do that in real time, or even faster than real time.
Games is where i'm most forward looking to it though, better physics engines that actually mimic real physics, having surroundings that are realistically affected by what you do, and better AI. I can't wait.
Here is a good article about where the future of computing is going. This guy knows what he's talking about.

Capri306 09-23-2002 09:30 PM

Wow, that's a great article, man. Kinda like a "nice" version of Orwell's "1984", I guess. It's coming, and the stuff's only gonna get cooler as time progresses. I'll take on of those $100 pc's for now, though. ;)

Haven't seen the previews for Doom yet, though. Shoot me a link if there is one!

i heard about the new doom over a year ago...i thought it was supposed to be out by now...hrmm..theyre also planning a quake 4 and sim city 4 is almost out....thats the sweetes sim city ive ever seen, and sim city 3000 was sweet....

Doom III
Screenshots
This Movie talks about all the doom series, but seeing some of the scenes being rendered in real time for doom 3 are worth the long download.

Titan 09-23-2002 11:49 PM

I thought doom 3 was out already, too...I know nvidia (sp) designed the Ge-Force 4 specifically for that game. As for a gaming comp, see if you guys can find anything on a computer called the "Alien." I saw the add about 3 months ago, I think it was a 2.6 ghz p4 hybrid. I know it was made ONLY for games. Had 2 gigs of RAMBUS rd-ram...was so much tho, don't even remember the price...but it had a cool green tower ;)

HotRoddin 09-23-2002 11:50 PM

All i know is the day i go to shut this thing off and it says "I'm sorry HotRod I can't let you do that" ... I'm gonna freek !!

Bzzzzzzzzzzzzt

Ouch !!! I think this thing just shocked me ???

MidNiteBlu 5.0 09-24-2002 01:03 AM

Wow those pics of Doom3 look awesome!! But when did Doom go into the whole zombie thing? Does anyone know what the stroy of 3 is sopposed to be?

Later,
Nick

LxMustangRacer 09-24-2002 02:36 PM

"DOOM III is basically a 'retelling' of the original DOOM .... Most of the game is set on Mars, where you're a marine recently stationed at the Union Aerospace Corporation" excerpt from this article. No it isn't out yet, and the development team has been using ati's radeon 9700 pro to demo the game stating that it is currently the best performer for the game.
titan, it was probably an alienware computer, they're a good brand and is one of the next best things you can get to building one yourself. Looked and saw they have a P4 2.8 with 1gig of ram for $4200, get 2 gigs brings the price up to $5000. Personally I'd go with the gig of pc-1066 rdram(not offered in 2gb) which brings it to $4500. Actually if I were to get something like that, i'd buy all the parts myself and put it together which would probably drop the price at least $500.

Titan 09-24-2002 02:43 PM

As much as I love my computer...I think I would enjoy a fully modded engine w/ a s/c instead.

No, workstations use good ol' 100 Mbit, and some of the server (main ones) use fiber optics setup... Internet connection is ATM :), which basically takes bandwidth as needed.
