Question power source

I know this should be in the audio forum but it seems like nobody ever posts in there. But, here's my question. I'm hooking up my subs and I don't know where to tap into for the 12v power for the amp. I don't want to hit the battery directly because I don't want to go through the firewall. So does anybody know of a place inside the passenger compartment that I can tap into? I've got a 1997 GT if it matters. Thanks for any responses.

Why don't you want to go through the firewall? I think most of the systems run relays to keep the current down in the car.

Go to the battery!!!! That's the only way to go, plain and simple. A amp is gonna pull WAY too many amps wire it into the fuse pannel or anything.

BTW, what subs/amp are you running?

Hey tireburner, I've got two 10" Rockford Fosgate XLC's being pushed by an Audioplanet 600W amp. I guess I will go through the firewall then, I just didn't want to mess with that. Was hoping there was an easier way. Thanks for helping out though.

lol...i just replied to you in audio...

go through the door to the hood...most cars have a hole there big enough for a 6ga wire...this way you dont touch the firewall...

I wouldn't do that....the wire and get pinched and cause a short.

i said it depends on your car...maybe the 97 gt doesnt have enough room, but youd be surprised how durable monstercable is...and a little bit of pressure on 6ga wire really does nothign to it cuz the outer layer is so thick...ive done this a number of times and most cars hardly push on the wire, and never actually "pinch" it... ...but like i said..never done it to a 97 gt

Hey jj_jonathon, I went through the hole you were talking about and it doesn't look like that much pressure is being put on the wire. But thanks for the caution tireburner, I'll definitely keep my eye on it. But everything is hooked up now and it sounds awesome. Thanks for the help.

just be careful......over time the insulation can wear down, then the door and wire can make direct contact....and that just ain't fun. IMO the best way is to wire it through the firewall....you don't actully have to drill a hole...there should be a grommet or something you can run it through.

wait..........

I'm just telling you what CAN happen. If you take it somewhere to get it installed they're gonna run it through the firewall. Oh, and what if your running 4 gauge like me? hehe

hehehehe... stop argueing. lol What would Dan say if he seen this, lol Yeh I'm going to finish up installing my deck tonight, it's actually pretty easy, I started last night actually. I just took out my old deck and just looked around, I have no subs or amp hooked up yet, but it'll be all in good time. I got 2 Sony 10's that I was debating putting in a box. I don't want no crazy sound system in my stang, just abit of bass (I don't want to raddle the sh*t out of it) I'm getting 2 new 6x9's and I am thinking of finding somewhere to put 2 front components or maybe just another set of 6x9's. Anyone know anything about putting front speakers in a '69 Mustang? I have 1 front speaker that I thought didn't work but apparently it wasn't even connected so I am going to try to connect that tonight and I sure hope it works. My buddy has a 600Watt RMS Audiobahn 12 sub but he hasn't hooked it up to his car yet. We're thinking of throwing it in my stang once he buys his amp this week and go to some rice show, and pull up with a bad *** car and then just pound the living **** out of everything. I can't imagin it would be safe for my car though. hehehe

then youd be like my buddy who has two audiobahns running with 1600watts goin to em...and i helped him install it..running the wire by the door course he drives a sunfire :\...the hole was perfect for it...i would never go through the firewall myself...

and this is not an arguement hehe...i honestly have never run the wire that way with a stang (never had the chance to)...so you could be right about wear in a stang...its all about making sure you take care of your car/system...keeping an eye on things...and ahem...smells...rofl..
