Got Bitten Again

Well, I didn't see it coming, but it looks like I got bitten by the project bug again. I bought another engine today.

Details will follow later.

:)

Take care,
~Chris

Hmm what shall it be, what shall it be.

Well, it's nothing to write home about, but I needed to buy it. A few years ago, my best buddy bought a 64 Ranchero, and wanted to build a hot rod out of it, so, he put up the money, and I put up the time, and we built a fun little ride. He dropped about $3k into a late 70's 302, and we used it for the powerplant. We had the heads worked by my favorite head machinist, put some TRW forged 10.5:1's in it, gave it a healthy cam, etc. He put less than 5000 miles on it in 2 years, and when he and his wife had their son, he decided that it just had to go. His father, a recently retired electrician, missed the hot rod days of his youth, and bought the Ranchero, strictly for the engine. He sold the rolling chassis for $100, and spent about $1000 more making a few changes to the engine (gear drive, different cam, roller rockers, etc.), wrapped in it plastic, and set it in the back of his garage, waiting for the right vehicle to come along. Since then, he's bought a 2001 Club Cab 4x4 F-150 Lariat, a motorhome, and a Jeep, and his wife said something has to go. Soooo, he asked me on Thanksgiving if I could find a buyer for the engine. I gave it some thought yesterday, and decided to make him an offer.

It's got at least $4000 worth of parts and machine work done to it, and is complete, from the new chrome oil pan (yuk), to the 750 Holley I built for it 3 years ago, and it's got less than 5k miles on it. He's throwing in everything he has for it, including the MSD 6A, so I offered him a grand for it, and he said okay.

I'll be picking it up tomorrow.

Now then, where am I gonna find a Pinto now that they've renewed the lease for the racetrack?

:)

Take care,
~Chris

Heh, it won't seem so "little" when you're trying to shoehorn it into a 64 or 65. Trust me.

Are you going to start doing some drag racing? Or are you going to put that motor into a dirt track car??? BTW, is Ventura Raceway a dirt track only?

PKRWUD 11-30-2002 06:36 PM

I have no idea what I'm going to put it in, but it will more than likely be a weekend cruiser, with occasional runs down to Carlsbad.

Ventura Raceway is a 1/5th mile clay/dirt oval. They run Pony stocks, VRA modifieds, IMCA modifieds, VRA sprints, SCRA sprints, flat track and speedway motorcycles, etc.

Borla, ARP, Vortech, Wilwood, JAZ, and Paxton are all headquartered within a few miles of me, and are my neighbors. It has been frequently discussed about how we have so many performance parts manufacturers here, and not a single 1/4 mile track. Borla bought the corn fields across the street from them and wanted to build an NHRA certified drag strip, and everyone else was going to contribute. This could be used for product testing, street racers, and they had a guarantee of at least one NHRA event a year. It was days away from breaking ground when the city of Oxnard pulled their permits. This was 3 years ago, and it hasn't changed.

The closest track is probably LACR in Palmdale, but most of the guys around here like the 3 hour drive down to Carlsbad.

I love my Ventura Raceway, but we do need a 1/4 mile track, too.

Take care,
~Chris

Sounds like a sweet motor Chris ;)

Get me a video clip I wanna hear it :D

What you think your gonna put it in?

LayanRubr 11-30-2002 07:43 PM

PKRWUD, watch your wallet, its a symptom :) I'll come back with a suggestion to put it in, so many options!

Feelin a trip!

Well Hot damn Honey..You gonna' let me crank on that bad boy with you? (I promise no garage floor burn outs!)....LOL. I can swing by and help pick it apart for you. I know you love it when I do that....Ooo Oooo I know, put it in a 78' Country Squire Station wagon. Pull out the 429 and put in your new motor. Fun, sexy machine for a coastal cruise.....I especially like the ones with the paneling.....ROFL
;)

Well If there would have been one in town, I would own a Mach 1 right now! No luck. It wasn't as easy as buying a sweater from the mall or picking up a v-6 that is for sure. Those silly sales guys. Don't even know the difference between the two. I couldn't justify a Saleen, even if Steve and the boys in Irvine put $20,000 into the car..$50,000 - $72,000. Hmmmm, no thanks. I'd rather spend $50,000 on a 'Bra if one comes up, clean and ready for a new home.....

Good Job Chris. Project time!

Saw a guy at Carlsbad today with a stock 74 pinto. He's got a built on too, stinks that it will be January before I see him again.

BTW, details will be forthcoming on the Kamaro Killer v. Deuce showdown......

LOL!!! Just the fact that you brought it up speaks volumes!

How funny. I hope you didn't embarrass him too badly, he's new to this. He is our FUTURE! We must bring him into this arena gently, but confidently.

:)

Take care,
~Chris
