Anyone use Linux??

Does anyone on here use linux? If so what do you think of it. I'm tired of windows acting screwy and was interested in trying out linux. thanks in advance.

Yeah I do. Its cool if you're into playing around with stuff. Just stay away from the latest release of Redhat, 7.0. It looks nice, but is really buggy right now. Give it a few more revisions.

6.2 is much less buggy. You can always update later.

Ya, get Redhat 6.2. If you like playing with computers, you'll love it. Lots too learn, but if you aren't big on computers, get a friend to help. If you are big on games, or have a lot of programs on windows that you use, check out their compatability with WINE (Linux Windows Emulator) first, or look for replacement programs. If you aren't ready to switch to linux, try reinstalling windows, that will fix most problems. If you need more info, just ask here!

yeah I have run RedHat 6.2 and Mandrake.

Linux is great...but be prepared to do some learning if ya don't know it.

I run Redhat on a work machine for web stuff.

1. Uninstall it.
2. Install 6.2
3. Wait for Redhat to fix 7.0

Luckily Redhat didn't have any trouble with my system (3COM eithernet card). But sometimes it becomes a black art to get it to work right. I suggest sacrificing a chicken and ramdomly recompiling your kernel. http://www.mustangworks.com/msgboard/smile.gif

What kind of card do you have?

NarayanM 04-05-2001 01:42 AM

Yeah, take it out, reboot, and the install it and reboot.

But if it is a "mainstream" card you shouldn't have a problem with it.

3com nics work great!

Well it wont matter anyway. Unless I do dual boot, which is pointless for me, I wont be able to run my internet connection. I am hooked up to cable modem and they dont support linux OS. So i would have to use windows anyway......so ill wait until another time. Thanks for the feedback though.

i have a linksys card..says it works with linux..and its hooked to a linksys router

Ya, for now you have to buy mainstream hardware to work with linux. It really isn't ready for you average consumer yet. Get 6.2 now, and wait at least until 7.1. RedHat *.0 numbers are basically 'beta' and then *.1 is the first stable revision, and *.2 is chill. That also applies to other RedHat distributions (mandrake, something_else_that_I_can't_remember, etc.). Get linux from cheapbytes.com and try it out on a dual boot, nothing to loose.
