Does anyone know electronics?
I'm having trouble with my power windows in my 88'GT drop top. They seem to cut out durning going up or down. I think it has something to do with a "circuit board"? Does anyone know what it could be and how I can fix it? And where I could get the parts to do it. Thanks ahead of time for your help.

Pull off the door panel on the side with the problem. Get a schematic for the window circuit. I know the haynes manuals have them. Check all connections. I think it is probaly the motor. The brushes on it may be worn. Anyways, what circuit board are you talking about? Basic parts of the circuit are switch, regulator, and motor. Try tapping the area around the motor when putting the window up and down. Just do a little troubleshooting.

elmir50,
I know where your going with this, but should I do that to all four winsows? You see, it doesn't matter which window I role up or down, it will still lose power and then none of the windows will work, not just the one I'm rolling. They all lose power to a short time, then all come back on at the same time. Is there some kind of main power source that feeds all the window motors that could be giving me my problem? This is so frusturating! |
Did you get the wiring schematic yet?
|
Hammer,
Not yet, still working on it. My car is still in storage, so I am just getting all the info I can before I take it out. The snow is almost gone here and I'm waiting for it to rain really good, twice. Mike |
I got the haynes manual for 79'to 93'. But when I look in the back for wiring diagrams, theres nothing for the power windows. In fact, it looks like the wiring diagrams only go up to 87'. Now where do I look?

Does that car have a power window "Lock-out"? My Toyota FourRunner does have one that malfuctioned producing similar problems. Sometimes the power windows to all but the driver window just wouldn't work. It was a bad lock-out switch.

Rev,
Yeah, I do have a power window lock out button. But would that cause all the windows to cut out, and after waiting for awhile, they come back on. It seems when I mess with the windows in trying to role them up or down they always cut out. All of them do, doesn't matter which window I'm playing with, they all are gone. Would the lock out button do that? |
It could be the lock out switch. When switches and relays get old and lose efficiency, the resistance goes up. This causes problems in the circuitry. I had a tank selector switch (on 90 F-350 front to rear) go bad and it made the rear tank fuel pump stop working and only gave partial current to the front tank.
I thought the fuel pumps went bad, but I pulled the old one out and tested it and it worked. So I went through all of the switches and relays in the circuit and I jumped the tank selector switch and that was it. |
88GT5.013.02,
I'm following you on the lock out switch and it sounds like a winner. Its been raining out here so I haven't had a chance to do any testing on the car. One question though, when I lose power to all the windows, I also have no power to the power locks. They all seem to come back on at the same time. Does that sound normal? |
Yeah wierd things happen with electronics. It could pull enough amps to stop everything without blowing the fuse. Wierd stuff happens.
